Worth an update to focus on beer, not the rest of the store.

This location, like many Whole Foods, now has beer on tap and growlers to go. This is a small store no where near as large as the Montrose, Katy, or Sugar Land locations that also have beer, but it's a nice set up and the people are great. The bar area is right by the side door, easy to find. They constantly are rotating their taps, which is nice, and have some nitro on occasion. Right now they only have 5-6 taps at a time, but I hear there is at least some discussion about expanding. They regularly do tap takeovers and pint nights (Saint Arnold, Karbach, North Coast, and Lagunitas, recently). Thursday's between 1-4pm is their growler Happy Hour, $2 off 32oz, $3 off 64oz. That is a fantastic deal! You can enjoy a pint at the bar and decide what you want to take home in the growler. Everyone who works behind the bar is friendly and engaging. It's a grocery store with bright fluorescent lights, not a beer focused dive bar. So go in with the right frame of mind and you'll be happy.

This beer is primary a grocery store, lets get that out of the way. However all the way to the left you find a decent selection of your standard beers(Stone, Dogfish, Sierra Nevada, Chimay) and a pretty good selection of Locals(SA, Rahr, Southern Star) The quality and the prices are good, but remember when walking in your going to a grocery store, and thats the employees main focus, food. Whole Foods is a great place to try whenever other local beer stores are out of some limited releases, such as Divine Reserve series. Anyway, if you are in the area, and have a few minutes, go in and check it out, you may find something you like.

Ok, first let me say that I love whole foods market, especially the superstore in Austin. Got that? Good. Now let me secondly say that I would never go here if this place weren't right by my house. There seems to be a dearth of good grocery stores in west Houston, and by that I mean in between the Katy and the Galleria (or Central market if you will) areas. Bearing that in mind, this place isn't so bad. Somehow they always have ripe, fresh beautiful organic produce here (which costs an arm and a leg), and they do have the best selection of cheese in the area, but the beer selection is pathetic. Let's face it, this isn't produce advocate, ok. If you are in the area and want beer, you might as well go up westheimer a few streets to get to the HEB mega store or the nearest Spec's (wherever you are in Houston, there's always a Spec's nearby). I suppose I'll keep going here until something better comes along to get top notch produce and cheese and meats, but I don't waste my time looking for beer here unless I'm in a rush.

Whole Foods Market is basically a health food supermarket, they have a lot of normal stuff too, but it leans towards healthier stuff. Since Whole Foods isn't your average supermarket expect the prices to be a little higher than usual. Personally, Whole Foods isn't a place I'd normally do my grocery or beer shopping at on a regular basis, nor is the store worth a long drive. The beer selection is pretty good though, with a nice mixture of the standard imports, popular microbrews, and a fair number of pleasant surprises. I also noticed more organically produced beers than I'd seen anywhere else. If you can't find a beer elsewhere in town it might be worthwhile to give Whole Foods a call, otherwise I'd suggest Spec's or Central Market.
