Excited to try another Sahti from its country of origin. I enjoyed Finlandia's ordinary Sahti (8% ABV), so expectations for this one are moderately high.

BOTTLE: Clear plastic. Unbranded black screw-top. Generic paper label. .75 litres. Best before: 13.07.2015. Heavy yeast and sediment is plainly visible at the bottom of the bottle.

10% ABV.

Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland, and allowed to come to near room temperature over the course of consumption. Reviewed live as a Sahti per the label.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: None. No lacing.

BODY: Murky orange-brown. Semitranslucent but nontransparent. Floating yeast is plainly visible within. Sediment is present on the bottom.

Appears to be of low carbonation - which is to style. It looks pretty typical of a Sahti.

AROMA: Twigs. High sweetness; low attenuation. Juniper is faint, and I find it only when searching.

Hides its booze shockingly well. No yeast character or off-notes is detectable.

Aromatic intensity is average. It's not a real expressive taste. The juniper in particular is lacking.

TASTE: Has a raw sweetness and a faint sourdough-y sourness, as well as mild faint juniper twigs - but no gin-like berries. It's quite simple and shallow, but balanced. Baker's yeast is somewhat evident.

I notice no booze or off-notes. There's also no hop profile.

The juniper was more pronounced in Finlandia's regular Sahti. But the juniper resins are the best aspect of the beer, and lend a twig-like but restrained bitterness.

Not gestalt, but enjoyable. Not real deep, subtle, or nuanced, but it hits all the key fundamentals of the Sahti style...except for the usual hefeweizen-esque banana character of the yeast - which is strangely absent.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, perfectly carbonated, slightly acidic, and aptly thick and hefty on the palate. Supports the flavour profile, but doesn't accentuate it.

There isn't a harmony of texture and taste, but the raw almost wort-like feel of the beer plays to its strengths taste-wise.

OVERALL: It drinks like it's maybe 7-8%. I prefer Finlandia's regular Sahti to this strong version, but it's a nice Sahti for what it is, and I'm glad it's one of the most widely available examples of the style available in Finland. Quite drinkable for its high ABV, but it's not gestalt and lacks the intricacy and subtlety of world-class beers.

A: Orange/Red with an non-existant head.

S: Berries, Caramel, Belgian yeast, Fruit.

T: Malt, Caramel, Bread, Cloves, Figs, Alcohol.

M: Very sweet and mighty with almost no carbonation. Looong aftertaste.

I guess Sahti is one of those hate/love kind of brews because it is so different. Well, i definitely enjoyed this brew alot and would
recommend it to anyone wanting to try genuine finnish sahti!
