This has been on my wants list for 8 years. It just turned up at a local store, unfortunately it's best by 7/16. But it's 9%, so it should be good, no?

Very little carbonation or head.

Aroma of black strap molasses, licorice, dark raisins, rye bread.

Showing a little oxidation, but some nice flavour... Molasses, licorice, bakers chocolate, rye bread, raisin, dark rum. Restrained bitterness.

Moderate to full body has a light residual sweetness, with a drying finish. A bit flat.

Appearance: Poured in to a chalice. Nice cola black. Carbonation is good and bubbly with an aggressive pour. Medium sized bubbles develop a loose, frothy caramel coloured head with a relatively moderate to low retention (moderate dissipation). Nicely settled thin ring of lace and faint surface carbonation

Aromatics: Nose is full of dark fruits - dates/plums, with hints of sweet nuts like almond/cashew and even a touch of vanilla, caramelized brown sugar, and mellow roasted coffee.

Taste: Starts very fruity and sweet, then mellows into a molasses+dark cacao flavour with those dark fruits staying present. A nice coffee bitter that doesn’t near espresso, and plenty of nicely roasted malts that finishes in an almost sweetened bitter anise/fennel/licorice.

Feel: Bitter but not earthy, and moderately to heavy body, the settled out carbonation lets it swirl smoothly across the palate with a creamy and light coffee texture. Just a pang of alcohol vapour at the very end, and finishes off pretty cleanly, with memories of the coffee float away.

Overall: A wonderful fruity porter that is well balanced between it’s roasted malts and rich bitter and creaminess - I would easily add this as a enjoyable porter anytime.

Paring: I would definitely use this as an after dinner digestif, as fruity as it is it would compliment almost all fruit tarts or pies. It’s sweet bitter combo would also play very well with something more rich like a volcano brownie or red velvet cake.

BBD 2016. Pours black. Normal head volume, poor lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of light roast, dark chocolate, raisins with plum notes, caramel and light molasses with a bit of caramel.

Light full bodied with a smooth texture that has a bit of creaminess. Slightly below normal carbonation level and is a bit low for the body. Light effervescence in the middle and prickly in the finish.

The flavor profile is quite outstanding. The 9% ABV is very well covered by the rich complex flavors. All the flavors of the nose appear, but mostly in blended fashion. Sweet molasses and caramel form the base with roast on the top. Bitterness is a hint in the middle and mostly roast based. The finish is a slow sweet fade with notes of chocolate, raisin and plum.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass at the World of Bee in Pooler, GA. The appearance is black with a small tan head. The aroma is coffee with some cocoa. A really good porter.

Poured an opaque pitch black with no head and minimal lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and black licorice. Taste is sweet roasted malt with a hint of dark chocolate followed by black licorice at the end, with no bitterness. The beer is creamy and a bit oily. The 9% alcohol is not detectable. Very good brew.

Pours a dark brown that can't be seen through. There are aromas of malt, toffee, and - perhaps chocolate. It has a really malt-forward taste with caramel and brown sugar flavors. Mouth feel is nicely full but also syrupy (which I don't count as entirely pleasant).

Pours an opaquely dark brown with mild carbonation.Taste is creamy roasted malts with a slight hoppyness. Undertones of dark fruit and rich chocolate. A very smooth ported that makes a fine after-dinner or evening drink.

Pours a deep mahogany color - close to black. A quarter inch of mocha colored foam with moderate lacing. Nose is sweet malts, a bit of stickiness, dark fruit - very nice. Taste is sweet licorice (very pleasant) with toasted malts on the finish. Feel is a little thin, but not syrupy.

Pours an opaque dark brown almost black color with khaki colored head. Roasted malt, some dark chocolate, and smoke on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with smoke and roasted malt.

Looks normal.
Smell gives me what I expected from the label.
Taste had the bitter malt that I have come to expect from the style.
But this truly is a smooth porter.
And I will seek it out again when in Florida.
Reviewed on the "1001" and probably deserves to be there.

L: Pours a dark cola black, with a head as thick as a penny. Lacing doesn't last long as this white strands of lace follow their way back down to the darkness below.

S: Rum raisins, toasted almonds, and huge hit of black licorice and alcohol fill the nostril.

T: Sweetness hits first and it hits hard. Dark chocolate and sugary plums up front are quickly replaced with toasted (but like the description reads, not burnt) malts. There's a hint of cherry sweetness in the finish alongside the strong black licorice and alcohol.

F: Lower end of carbonation. Mouthfeel is fairly thick, soft and billowy.

O: Wow. Complex flavors, but they aren't fighting for control of this brew. I've been wowed by Duck-Rabbit before, but this is good stuff. Let it warm a bit. Like previous dark beers from them, I'd recommend trying on a blank palate. Don't give this ago after a few IPA's or anything macro. You will miss out on a this complex take on a unique style. I always appreciate a good porter that pulls off complexity without the crutch of coffee beans (as much as we all love them).

Part of a broken-open Craft advent calendar. 12 ounce bottle poured into tulip.

Pours black with thin cola edges when held to a light with a thin mocha head that leaves subterranean rock formation lace as it recedes.

Smells of nutty black chocolate, melted sugar, ground coffee, soft licorice and distant menacing alcohol.

Tastes of black chocolate, creamy coffee, spiced brown sugar, dried black cherry and sugared raisin.

Feels big and soft. Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation. Finishes pretty close to sweet.

Verdict: Highly recommended. A big dark chocolate bar of a beer to keep you warm in the winter.

A really nice porter. The alcohol level cranks it up a notch, and the flavors are all blended well together.
It looked very nice in the glass. Unlike some reviews, I didn't get "thin" on the mouthfeel.
Straight-ahead delicious.

A-almost black in color with mahogany highlights and a thin layer of light tan head

S-roasted malt, molasses and chocolate, and light coffee

T-roasted malt, chocolate sweetness, and juicy dark fruits

M-medium body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall a pretty decent Baltic Porter, a little thin for me, but enjoyable

Pours to give a deep black body, with only the faintest ruby tint, and a cream coloured head that dissipates to a thin film on the surface. The smell is very deeply fruity and yeasty, with some heavily roasted malt aromas coming in as well. The taste is again bold in dark fruits, with similarities to Chimay Bleu, and a deep malty after tone. The finish is quite heavy on flavour, with a very smooth feel. Overall this is a damn fine ale, very pleased to have had it.

Oh boy. I LOVE this style o f beer and I am extra stoked to try a beer from North Carolina! This is a dark, dark beer that pours with a thin layer of brown fizz that disappears quickly. The overall odour and taste are dominated by cocoa, roasted malt and Nescafe. The finish is very dry, with a slow burn thanks to the high alcohol content. This is a gem - exactly the type of beer I hope for when I open the door on my Beer Advent Calendar.

12oz bottle, day 16 of the Craft Beer Advent Calendar - glad am I to be able to try these sought-after brews from the south-eastern US, especially this one!

This beer pours a rather solid black abyss, with the scantest of basal mahogany edges, and one finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and mildly creamy brown head, which leaves but a few strands of dotted mitochondrial lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of bready, grainy caramel malt, rich bittersweet chocolate, reduced brown sugar, a touch of those Scandinavian anise candies, cafe-au-lait, an indistinct dark fruitiness, and a wee hint of metallic alcohol warming. The taste is softly grainy and roasted caramel malt, subtle toffee, cherry and raisin-infused medium dark chocolate, muddled coffee grounds, a suggestion of soured milk, stale brown sugar, ethereal black licorice root, and a relatively respectful dose of booze astringency.

The bubbles are pretty weak in their tamped-down frothiness, the body a decent medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, only a bit of wayward alcohol heat picking away at my palate here. It finishes off-dry, but not by all that much, as the cocoa, licorice, and coffee have a sort of collective placating effect.

Well, I gotta say, this is pretty damned good, but not the game-changer or eye-opener that it might have been if I'd come into it a number of years ago. Anyways, very worthy, especially as a spreader of this somewhat esoteric style across the near deep American south, I'd imagine.

Pours a deep, reddish brown with nice two finger head and solid retention and lacing. Smells of malted chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, cakey. Tastes of sweet malt forward, brown sugar, chocolate, caramel – hint of non-specific dark fruits, very malty but not saccharine or syrupy. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, fair amount of carbonation, nice clean finish.
Overall, this is a great Baltic porter. Very complex but very drinkable. This is a solid beer, and easily the best Baltic porter I’ve had.

Pours a deep, deep brown, almost black. Has a thin tan head with barely any retention or lacing. The aroma is big roasted malt with hints of coffee, grain, and stronger alcohol notes. Taste-wise it is very similar to the aroma. The body is not overly heavy and has a nice smooth finish.

12oz bottle, best before 12/2015, poured into a snifter glass. Got this from my friend in NC at Grapes & Grains in Clemmons, NC.

Appearance: Black with a hint of cola brown at the edges when held up to the light. Barest thin light tan ring of foam at the edge of the glass and nothing across the top. No lacing.

Smell: Chocolate, caramelized malt, brown sugar, licorice, molasses.

Taste: Roasted malt, char, licorice, molasses, burnt sugar, and just a hint of acidity and metallic at the finish. There is also a lingering spiciness on the tongue that lasts a bit at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, very light carbonation, with a mild astringency at the finish, but not in a bad way.

Overall / Drinkability: Seems to hit the style pretty well. What it lacks in lacing and mouthfeel it more than makes up for in aroma and taste. While I enjoyed this, I cannot say I would want more than one an evening. Still, a solid example of the style and I'm glad I got to try it.

L: about 1 cm of head forms, fizzles out to a thin, messy collar... very dark brown liquid, with brownish red highlights... very little lace

S: dark chocolate-covered raisins, no hops... very little presence of alcohol... pure malt muscle... overall, not overwhelming intensity

T: big hit of roast seemingly out of nowhere, takes on coffee tones later... fair amount of bitterness and dark toast... dark chocolate midway and through the finish, but perhaps begging for a touch of sweetness... slight note of caramel flashing before midway point... alcohol nicely muffled in the background, with a mellow fruity tone lingering with some chocolate raisin in the aftertaste... huge malt core

F: thickish (perhaps a tad too), medium-full body... round, rubbery feel with slight viscosity going down... some residual slickness, but the bitter and roast balance that out.... dry enough finish with a faint afterglow of booze

O: lovely richness and bold approach to the style... but it lacks a bit of depth in flavor/character... this beer may, however, be an excellent candidate for barrel-aging

Poured a black body with little head and lace. A sweet aroma of chocolate mixed with roasted malt aromas. Beer is light to medium bodied, smooth, even a little oaky/woody, more sweet than roasted with a slight overbalance of chocolate (possible vanilla) sugary sweetness over roasted malts. Nonetheless, well crafted beer that controls itself, has a clean finish that complements rest of beer and the ABV is well-hidden (no idea it was this high).

12 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a pretty, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a quarter finger of chocolate-colored head that quickly dissolved into a halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Very aromatic. Tons of roasted malt aromas, imparting notes of freshly backed and toasted bread, some subtle coffee aromas, dark chocolate and a touch of smoke.

Taste: Wow! Lots of roasted malt up front, followed by lots of dark chocolate, some subtle smoke and licorice and a lot of brown sugar-like sweetness. Really, very good!

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy and pretty smooth, as there is practically no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 9%, there’s a very nice alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: Wow! I like this beer! I really like the roasted malt and dark chocolate flavors and the smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Certainly the best beer I’ve had from the Duck-Rabbit.

I usually find the Duck Rabbit dark brews to be quite satisfying, but this one underwhelmed.
Look; Pours dark brwon/black with almost no head despite an agreesive pour. Some reddish tints around the edge.
Smell, Nice, molasses, coffee and roasted malts are quite enticing.
Taste; Falls short of matching the smell. A little bit of an over-ripe fruit taste. Sweet, but not too sweet some some other Baltic Porters, but it seems a tad off balance. Little trace of he 9% alchohol.
Feel; A tad thin, very low, to no carbonation. A sticky feeling afterwards.
Overall; Not bad, but suffers in comparison with some other Baltic Porters that I've sampled. If the taste matched the smell, we'd be talking about a winner. I'm not sure I would seek it out again with other options available.

It pains me to write an unfavorable review, because I normally appreciate Duck Rabbit's offerings. This just doesn't seem like any Baltic Porter I've ever had... It's nicely colored, but its plum, cherry, and raisin flavors are - to my palate - truly excessive, almost resulting in a cough-syrupy sweetness. I'll come back to it again in a week to give it another chance, but for now, I think it's a miss.
