BEER INFO

Style: English Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Duck-Rabbit Barleywine is the hoppiest of all the Duck-Rabbit brews. This is a Farmville-style Barleywine, crafted the way brewers in Farmville have always done. Loads of Amarillo hops give a piney citrusy bitterness that's supported beautifully by a toffee malt backbone.

Poured into a snifter. Pours orange red with a nice fluffy head. Smells of berries, slight grape, and sweet light grain. Tastes of berries, molasses, and slight alcohol. Beer is full bodied good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

Poured a beautiful cloudy ruddy-brown with a thin tan head that burns off almost immediately. The aroma is pretty mild, with hints of hops and malt sweetness. The taste is a little more robust, with some nice dark fruit notes. The body has a nice fullness on the palate and a smooth finish.

I'm forced to review this after having poured a glass with a flat head—I think I got unlucky and got one that had just lost some of its carbonation or something. That said, it still pours a deep reddish brown and tastes wonderful. It's kind of nutty and simultaneously smooth and robust. Fantastic beer.

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales Teku glass. No notches next to the dates on the label

A- Pours a reddish light brown color with a 1/2 inch light tan had that retains well before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- Has a standard red ale aroma with a mildly hoppy tone.

T- This is a barleywine? Basically tastes like a red ale with a bit of a boozy finish. Definitely on the dryer side since there's none of the sweetness I associate with barleywines. Mildly bitter.

M- Soft feels with a bit of a boozy afterbite. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- This is a good beer but it's not a barleywine. It's a hoppy imperial red ale. If it was labelled as such, I might've scored it higher.

12 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, deep, dark mahogany color, speckled with orange highlights and half of a finger of white-colored head that dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Wow! Massive aromas of candied sugar, dried stone fruit such as prunes, apricots, and dates, toffee, as well as bready, toasted malt and some boozy alcohol.

Taste: That’s a nice barleywine. Malty up front, followed by lots of toffee, brown sugar, and candied sugar-like sweetness, dried stone fruit such as prunes, apricots, and dates, finished by some slightly bitter, but still well balanced, piney hops.

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy and smooth as hell, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 11%, there is a very pleasant alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a very nice barleywine. Lots of good, bready, malty flavors melded with lots of toffee, dried stone fruit, candied sugar and nicely balanced hoppy bitterness. Very, very tasty!

12oz Bottle received in trade with phyl21ca - thanks!

Appearance - Hazy brown colour with a good size frothy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, anise, all spice

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, molasses/caramel and hops. There is also some vanilla, anise, metallic, and a some dark fruits.

Overall - Bottle says best before 2013, not sure how far out they date their bottles. This one seems like a little past its prime. Some odd metallic/medicinal flavour and a little oxidized. Had higher hopes for this one.
