Style: Doppelbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Duck-Rabbator Dopplebock is a powerfully malty German-style lager. The malty / grainy flavors so dominate this beer, it's like a whole loaf of bread in every glass! Is it a beverage or is it a meal? It's both.

2014 vintage.

Aroma is fairly sweet, with toasted malt dominance and toffee notes. There's a hint of specialty malt fruitiness, adding with a metallic note.

Flavor reveals tart cherry undertones, which usher in slightly sweet caramel malt, finishing deeply toasted and a touch harsh. Not the deepest malt character, but fairly drinkable, though the dark fruit is slightly offputting.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a dark mahogany color with a 3/4" cremay tan head that slowly but visibly recedes to a thin layer with a thicker ring around the sides of the glass. Sipping creates sheets of foam that become small leggy patches of lacing. Eventually there is a thick ring of foam with only a very thin small patch on the surface.

The aromas include dark caramel, dark fruits and a touch of chocolate.

Some of the flavors follow from the nose and include dark caramel, dark fruits and some chocolate. There also seems to be a bit of brown sugar here.

The mouthfeel is on the thick side of medium bodied with adequate carbonation. The finish is medium length and begins as the sweetness starts to fade and some dark roast malt and black pepper like bitterness emerge to take over center stage. Everything slowly fades out leaving the bitterness to eventually become dry.

I'm enjoying this beer and certainly would be willing to drink another. That said, I have a bit of a bias towards the Troegenator which I revisited last night to prepare for having this beer. The bitterness there is less spicy and seems to me to fit with the style just a bit better.

Poured 12oz bottle into snifter glass. 8.5% abv

Appearance- Pours a dark brown with a two finger red-brown tinted head. Opaque.

Smell- Creamy bready/chocolate malt aroma. Dark fruit/sugary

Taste- A sweet malt up front, bready with bits of roasted grains. Notes of chocolate. The dark fruit from the smell also comes through in the taste with notes of plum and cherry. A light grassy flavor ends with a dry, lightly roasted finish.

Mouthfeel- Heavy in body, syrupy, mid level carbonation.

Overall- A full flavor, full body doppelbock. Well done with the malt profile. Could be a bit less sweet, but the smoothness really comes through with this beer.

Tasty beer! While it's no celebrator which I'm assuming is the inspiration given the name, it is a flavorful big beer. Lots of dark fruit like you'd expect in a dopplebock or barley wine. Sip on this one and let it warm up! Little carbonation, and pours a thick murky brown delicious brown. A little sweet but overall very drinkable and enjoyable.

Dark chestnut brown with a ruby tinge. Less than a finger of tan-tinted head. Fruity malt aroma with a definite flat-cherry-cola thing going on. Thick and syrupy mouthfeel. Very sweet up front, with more cherry and just a little chocolate, and a slight lingering hop bitterness for balance in the aftertaste. It's fine, but doesn't compare to the classics.

12 oz bottle. Pours light brown with tall, long lasting, fluffy beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is of bready malt, sweet cherries, caramel and hint of coffee. Body is full, creamy and slightly crisp. Taste is of caramel malt, herbal hops, cherries and peppery alcohol. Finish is long, sweet first then becomes dry and peppery. Rich, tasty excellent brew.

Looks like a very normal, run of the mill light dark beer. Bit of a dark amber brown. Has a solid smell, sweet smell maybe the slightest hint of caramel apple in there. Tast was a little plain although not unenjoyable. Dark sweet almost sticky notes of some kind of syrup that I cant quite place. Finish very smooth with flavor spread throughout. Overall not a bad beer but my first try of this kind so maybe its just not my favorite style. Would try again though.

After a few recent disappointments from this brewery I was reluctant to pick this up but am glad I did.
