Notes: The Duck-Rabbit Hoppy Bunny American Black Ale is both intensely hoppy and intensely black! Eight separate hop additions offer delicious bitterness and beguiling hop aroma/flavor. Heavily represented among these hops are Chinook, which provides deep pine and sticky citrus components, and a New Zealand hop called Motueka, from which we get bright fruit and spearmint notes.

(12 oz bottle, enjoy by 4/18, purchased today, sitting at room temp... poured into a nonic)

L: ton of tan foam on the pour (took up almost half the glass); very dark black-cherry red colored liquid... foam collapsed slow, keeping a chunky, rocky contour... several thins strands of crystalline lace

S: mellow, perfumy-floral hop, bit of a polyester(?)/carpet note... maybe a little roast, but not much at all... mostly a hard-candy like malt aroma far in the back... bit of oxidation

T: clashing static up front: intertwining layers of flowery, piney hops; smooth, sedate, berry hard-candy malt middle; hints of light caramel and dried grass in the finish; very faint peppery spice in the aftertaste - their description of spearmint seems right on, especially in that aftertaste (also on the nose leading up to each sip)... the flavors are so polished and married at its age; features more of a spectrum blend than hard-angled contrasting elements

F: quiet, a little too quiet... soft foamy touch up front, short syrup swoop in the middle, disappearing finish with a touch of bitter and booze warmth lingering through the finish... silky-resiny, silky soft

O: despite the age, had to try it; I don't often encounter (the broad range of) DR beers in my travels; as far as reviews, I had 2 of their core line on their main 'current' list here left to do... interesting, boldly-flavored, but perhaps its age has resulted in mellowed/muted expression... will track down a fresh(er) bottle considering its (hop counterpoint) novelty within their lineup (1404)

12oz single, served in a duck rabbit glass. I still think its a rabbit.

appearance: very dark, ebony body, big creamy mocha head with some nice retention

smell: dank green hops, bakers chocolate, a whiff of coffee

taste: Tasty stuff - moderate bitterness from the smoky roast, green leafy hops, bakers chocolate, cocoa powder

mouthfeel: creamy and rich, nice bitterness

overall: dug this

Pours ebony with a sliver of tan head. Pretty good head retention & lacing

S: Roasty & a little dark fruit

T: Roasty, slight carob notes, dryness, woody hops & pineyness up front. Carob & roastyness as this warms, woody & herbal hops. Finishes roasty, with a little carob & woody & piney hops

MF: Medium body. moderate carbonation, nice balance

Drinks pretty easy for the style & ABV

poured friom 12oz bottle into standard pint glass. Best by Sept 2013, so no worries on freshness.

Looked excellent when poured. dense black body, even when held up to the light. About a inch of thick coffee caramel coverd head.

Smell....well....not too much. a faint whiff of hops, and a roasted malt edge.

Taste was all roasted malt, no hop detection at all. Not unpleasant, just expecting a bit more balance.

Mouth was medium. Roasted malt stayed around on the mouth for quite some time.

Overall, this is a reasonably drinkable beer. However, I must confess to being irritated by two things. One, the lack of hops in a beer called "hoppy" Bunny (I guess "Malty" Bunny wouldn't sell as well) Also, and this isn't just Duck Rabbit, I'm beginning to wonder if Black IPA's are worthwhile. There are certainly tons of better IPA's out there, and tons of better Porters/Stouts. If you want to combine the two, both elements need to come through. This just doesn't cut it. It's more of a porter/stout. Not unpleasant, just not as advertised.

I might've entered my rating a little early, as this drink got better over time. Right out of the fridge, the flavors seemed timid and not all that complex. As the beer warmed up, the foretaste seemed more and more "stouty" while the aftertaste developed a hoppier tone. Nice roasted malts up front. Smooth on the tongue. And very pleasant hops in the gullet. Don't confuse this with an Imperial Black but do give it a try... just let it sit a while before you make up your mind.

Picked up a single at Chip's in OBX. It poured like a porter a near-black bodyand tan head. The citrus hops are well-balanced against the cocoa-tinged roasted barley. This is a smooth, medium bodied beer that could pass as an American stout or porter. It's plenty hoppy, but there isn't a clean upfront blast of hop oils to separate this beer from the other dark ales.
