Brewed by:
The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery
North Carolina, United States

Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Duck-Rabbit Hoppy Bunny American Black Ale is both intensely hoppy and intensely black! Eight separate hop additions offer delicious bitterness and beguiling hop aroma/flavor. Heavily represented among these hops are Chinook, which provides deep pine and sticky citrus components, and a New Zealand hop called Motueka, from which we get bright fruit and spearmint notes.

Poured into a Red Oak gilded pint glass.

A: Dark, ominous. Thick head, at least 1.5 inches. This beer absorbs light. It's incredibly thick and has a rich black color. It looks like black coffee. Even the head is colored - a nice, brown thickness. Extremely resilient frothing rings, like a stout.

S: Rich aromas emanate from this one. Apart from a heavy alcohol aroma from it's fairly high ABV, this beer smells of roasted malt, juniper, mint and coffee. It's lovely smell that's almost as good as it tastes.

T: Rich flavors of roasted malt and a lot of hops. Some heavy coffee notes on the aftertaste. A bit of citrus bite to it at first that quickly dissipates into an earthy fullness. A pleasant aftertaste that is not too bitter, but hoppy. The aftertaste is almost identical to a black coffee, with added alcohol. Exhale after a sip and it's coffee coffee coffee!

M: Thick, rich and smooth. Very little carbonation. Lots of bite on the palate after swallowing. No one can claim this is a boring beer. Every aspect of it is loaded and powerful.

O: Very yummy, though not completely my style of beer. Lots of flavors and an absolutely wonderful aroma (I think I'd rather smell it than drink it). The coffee flavor is welcome but a little overpowering. Wish it had more sweetness to it to fight the hops. Still, at least it's got character.

Pours a black looking until held to the light nice reds showing through. Nice fluffy two finger head falls to ringed scum that laces well.

Aroma is roasted malts nice chocolate light smoke notes good dose of hops to finish it off.

Taste is on par for the style good roasted malts chocolate with descent coffee notes. Finish is nice and hoppy vegetable/herbal like hops. Pretty good would buy and enjoy again but have had better examples of the style.

Mouthfeel is light side of medium with average carbonation.

Overall enjoyable brew, tasty easy drinking beer.

First had at Only Burger, Durham, North Carolina, poured from 12-oz. bottle into clear plastic beer cup. Malty enough to stand up to the cheeseburger, but hoppy enough to refresh the palate throughout the feast.

Pours like a stout. Smells like an IPA. Tastes like a bitter but roasty porter and feels creamy, again like a stout. Overall, it's pretty decent. But I don't love it.

Thanks to JLindros for giving me this bottle after getting a few too many extras. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice deep dark black with a good fluffy almost 3 fiinger head that faded to leave a TON of sticky side lacing. Quite nice for a Black IPA.

S - The hop presence is nice, good almost sticky pine but alot of roughly burnt malts. Not so much roast but burnt.

T - Taste is nice. Good burnt/roast malts. VERY bitter hops throughout the beer with a nice finish. Not alcohol really detectable.

M - Mouthfeel is nice no alcohol detectable. Still, a bit too burnt though.

O - Overall, this isnt a badd black IPA, just a bit too harsh on the burnt malts for my liking.

Poured into a snifter. Big thanks to SteveFinny for this.

3.0 A: Black color. Two and a half fingers of frothy light brown head. Retention is good, but just a couple whisps of lacing are left.

3.5 S: Big citrus and pine hoppiness. Orange and pineapple are strongest with some papaya in there as well. Mild roastiness with notes of molasses and caramel. Not bad.

4.0 T: The taste is a bit strange, even by black IPA standards, but it works. Moderate roastiness that has a peculiar tanginess to it. It's like a tangy molasses I'd say. Big orange hoppiness with pineapple and mango not far behind. Less piney than the nose led on. The reason this works is that the bitterness is kept low.

4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess and quite smooth.

4.0 D: I'm not a huge fan of the style, but I've had some pretty good ones as of late. I hope brewers keep impressing me.

Picked up a single at Chip's in OBX. It poured like a porter a near-black bodyand tan head. The citrus hops are well-balanced against the cocoa-tinged roasted barley. This is a smooth, medium bodied beer that could pass as an American stout or porter. It's plenty hoppy, but there isn't a clean upfront blast of hop oils to separate this beer from the other dark ales.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of hops, some roasted malts. Taste is like the hops and roasted malts going toe to toe throwing haymakers, with the malts finally winning in the end. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, despite the somewhat high abv, this beer is extremely drinkable and enjoyable.

Pours a dark brown with a half finger of beige head that lingers for a bit and leaves some nice lacing behind. The nose has mild roasted notes. The flavor profile is a bit flat – roasted malts are present, but certainly muted and the hops are barely there at all. The body is also a touch thin for the style.

Update: Tried this a second time in August of 2014 and noticed a discernible difference. Both the nose and flavor profile were bolder than I remembered the first time. The roast definitely outpaces the hops but the blend of the two is quite tasty. An upgraded rating is warranted and was completed by me.

Blind tasted this beer and enjoyed the bitterness an noticed a little chocolate on the nose that it brought, which was unexpected. Lace lingers but wasn't to thick, would've like to see more. Overall my impression was a nice black ale that showed up on the pallet with a hoppy but not over the top finish.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter

A- Black, but just a bit of deep dark brown shows through around the edges. Dense creamy brown head. Some specks of lacing are left behind.

S- Roast and resin. Bit of cocoa.

T- Roast. Mild sweetness, and some piney hop character involved.

M- A little sticky. Bitter finish.

O- Pretty good. Isn't over the top hoppy like most in this style, which is nice.

From a bottle, pours as opaque black with a frothy khaki head. Subtle aromas of sweet malts and indistinct citrus. Flavors of roasted malt, pine, and bitter hops. Other reviewers note chocolate and coffee flavors; I don't find these, but concede that there most be multiple hop varieties used. Overall, nicely sustaining flavors.

A: Dark brown to black with a ruby tinge when held to the light. 2 fingers of chocolate milk foamy head.

S: Citrus, chocolate, coffee, chocolate milk, pine.

T: Cappuccino, chocolate milk, orange, citrus, pine, dark roasted malts, stout like.

M: Medium thick smooth body, medium fine bubbled carbonation.

O: Duck rabbit does it again! A great brew, smooth and up to par with others in this style.

A - Pretty much poured like the picture deep black hue, tons of carbonation leading to a dense inch and a half layer of head, and the only difference seems that my head is more of a darker shade of mocha. Excellent lacing.
S - Very hoppy in the nose as expected, very Black IPA like with roast and chalky yeasts as well. Hopefully it's not too dry.
T - Fairly dank hop profile leading to a somewhat acidic hop experience. The hops even rest on the palate seconds after sipping. After a few sips I do detect some roast and a touch of bittersweet chocolates. It's good but not great.
M - Smooth, very hoppy, and somewhat chewy.
Overall this is not something I would pick up again but it's a fairly decent Black IPA. Definely more hop forward than I expected.
