For clarification, I am reviewing the Crossroads location (the South Broadway location as listed). There is another Andy's in Northwest Rochester and it would receive a much lower rating (don't bother!).
So, for the original Andy's...if you get the right person, you'll find someone with good beer knowledge. Unfortunately, that happens less times that you'd like. I must say, I did have an excellent experience there one of the beer guys let me buy the last Rogue Smoke Ale--it was one that he was saving for later in the back--but he let me buy it instead. A true beer advocate! They do have a good selection of bottles, but not as good as Apollo in Rochester.

The "wow" factor kicked in as soon as I walked in the door. Spacious, pleasant, and well-lighted store, with its excellent selection of wines and spirits visible as soon as you walk in. I made my way to the craft beer section and was amazed at the sheer volume of stuff. Everything is well organized, with the sections clearly labeled. Lots of national craft brands, with the imports and locals well represented. Staff are friendly and helpful, and they even deliver. What could possibly go wrong? This is a guaranteed stop the next time I find myself in Rochester. Highly recommended!

This store has a nice selection of beer, wine and liquor. Craft selection is solid, plenty of locals. Found some Surly & Toppling Goliath. Only downside is that there isn't a build your own 6-pack option. Didn't interact with any staff while there, but there was plenty around. Easy location with plenty of parking.

I've stopped by Andy's many times over the last few years, and I have always been happy. the selection rotates regularly with hot new things and old favorites both available. In my most recent visit I found this to be true for liquor as well. The staff has always been beyond friendly and helpful. Whenever I'm in Rochester, I make Andy's my only stop. I wish, though, like many places, they'd expand their singles selection. A place that big should allow you to make your own six pack. A must if you are in the Rochester area.

Very impressed with the selection of this place given its in a city without a huge population.

Was traveling through Rochester on my way to LaCrosse and called looking for a certain bottle and they thankfully had it and were courteous enough to hold it for me.

They must have 400 singles and two rows of craft 6pks. Great selection of domestic and import singles and packs. Was particularly impressed with the belgians and the sours on hand.

Mike seemed to be the beer expert and not only was he very helpful - he seemed to have a great knowledge of beers.

Check this place out.

Crossroads has a decent selection on hand usually; a nice mix of craft brews in varying sized packaging (bombers, 6pks, 750s) and a good assortment of brewers. If you have any brew you're looking for you can certainly ask them to check for it. They're usually pretty good about knowing what they have on hand or when they might be getting something in stock. Price point is about the normal for Rochester, so you should be able to ballpark how much you'll pay. You can also check their website for new arrivals, sales, coupons as well. I'd recommend this spot to anyone in the Rochester area.

Nice place here. There are areas of craft, imports, and 6 packs, and also stuff in the coolers. It is all spread out kind of miscellaneously. The entire back wall is beer, mostly macros.

I found the surly which is all I really cared about, it is on the top shelf near the middle of the coolers. They also had some other beers unavailable in Wisconsin which was nice. Overall the selection is great but not mindblowing.

They also take out your beer for you to your car, i didn't really care, but there is that option. A solid stop in Rochester.

Stopped here to pick up some Surly along with other stuff that I could not get in IA while visiting family for Easter. Not very large looking from the outside, but inside seemed much larger. Wine was on the left, beer in the middle, and spirits on the right. The coolers lined the back wall filled with half macro and half micro. Much of the craft beer selection were on shelves stored at room temp. It was kinda disappointing seeing very nice hoppy brews sitting on warm shelves while BMC stuff taking up most of the cooler space. There were alot of empty shelves in the coolers that could've been filled. Even the Surly Furious was empty and I had to ask for it from the back. Very nice selection of craft, import, and rare brews. Very happy with the selection and even had the oppertunity to sample a couple craft beers while talking beer with an employee. They had a couple of good beer sales going on and I even took advantage of a beer coupon that I printed off online. Overall a good experience and I'll go back again.

Traveling right past, so had to stop and check it out. I was extremely impressed at the selection here. Although some beers may have been sitting on the shelves for longer than usual. A few dusty bottles, but a wide selection nonetheless. Not a lot of beer coolers dedicated to craft, but sections dedicated to sixers, bombers, and the largest for imports. Some nice clearance deals and other prices were a bit higher than the TC metro, but I think that's to be expected. Prices were not bad at all though. Nice glassware selection as well. If I lived in Rochester, I would shop here. Really impressive selection. My only encounter with service was at the checkout and the young lady was very friendly. Great choice if you are in the area and looking for some brews.

review of the Crossroads location.

Andy's is an easy detour if passing through southern minnesota via i-90 - accessible by 63 from the West or 52 from the east.

pretty large interior - most beer storage is on shelves but there are also coolers, with a heavier emphasis on macro offerings.

The main intent was to snag some Surly, which is no longer being distributed in the area but has some scarce remains. They had Bender and Coffee Bender in 4-packs, chilled.

The Boulevard distribution was more diverse than in Madison with the likes of rye-on-rye, 7 tank saison, doppelbock, imperial pilsner.

I didn't see any flat earth (may have just overlooked) but there were some other lesser known minnesota beers present.

Deschutes (also not available in WI) had a fair representation - 6 packs of the flagships, hop in the dark, black butte, black butte 21, mirror mirror.

There were some dusty bottles from Pretty Things, some tyranena/central waters, lots of rogue, and other regional brews including devil dancer and some other semi-rare seasonals.

Prices were fair and service was present - overall a solid stop if passing through on i90.

Andy's Crossroads Location

Q/S: The selection is great. Andy's has everything I'm used to from living in the cities with only a few limited releases slipping through the cracks (like life and limb limited). 95% of the time they'll have what you're after. It's obvious the effort is there, and the shelves are easy to navigate, and I really like how they have a dedicated section for seasonal/limited releases.

S: There are a couple of guys who have their "ear to the streets" when it comes to beer. They've drank it, know when certain items will arrive. etc. I don't expect every employee to have a BA knowledge and I'm happy with a hello and "are you finding everything alright?" when they aren't around.

Final Words: I've been shopping here for years and it's continued improvement is undeniable. Their obvious efforts to meet my "snoody" BA expectations are appreciated.

I visited this store to buy some regional/rare beers for me to take home to Florida after a trip to Rochester. They had most of what I was looking for in 750ml or 22oz bottles which packed nicely (Victory, Ommegang, New Holland, Bell's). They quailuty seemed fresh, clean store with decent selction of beer and wine. Prices seems reasonable and staff was helpful. Liquor stores are limited from what I hear in Rochester, so this place won the gold star award for my needs at the time.

I also was looking for a off the wall wine, they found it, priced it and offered to order it if I wanted.

For Andy's Crossroads. The other locations have a much more limited selection.

This location has evolved over the past few years into a very good beer store (for Rochester). Excellent selection of domestics and imports, with multiple dedicated large shelves and fridges, and an additional area for seasonal brews. They often have limited release brews. Prices are consistent with other area shops. Nice selection of reasonably priced glassware.

Service can be spotty, depending on the day and the hour. They have some very good and helpful staff when you can find them, and are willing to put beers aside and fill requests; but more often there is no service.

*Edit* - In my recent visits service has been consistently excellent, so I've altered the grade to match.

I walked into the store and was greeted by an employee near the register areas. The beer areas is quite large with a very nice big single bottle area. Although this area blows away the Rochester competition already, they also have a sizable cooler area full of craft beer. In addition to the beers, there is a shelf with 1.5's and 3L bottles and another shelf with glassware. I was blown away by the JW Lees selection as well as many belgian rarities. I picked up a flanders red and a rauchbier and chatted with the a gentleman and the girl at the register. After chatting for a short while, I decided to move on so the lady behind me could by her Mich Golden Light. Overall, in my opinion, I think this is hands down, Rochester's best beer stop.

Update 11/28/09

Andy's has recently added two more sets of ten-twelve foot long shelves to house more craft beer. This, in my opinion, gives them a selection that is near equal to anyplace in Minnesota, and twice as large as Apollo Wine and Spirits.

Updated 1-8-08

It seems that Andy's has upgraded their selection. They now have most the the major micros available in Minnesota, ie. Bell's, Tyranena, Rogue, and others. Their single bottle selection has grown too, and has some interesting stuff in it like Rodenbach, Traquair House, and a number of nice Belgains. The BA Shelf Talkers area nice touch. The service has gotten better too, with a least a couple of their staff being quite knowledgeable about beer. The only real problem that I still have with the store is that they still have almost none of their micro/imports in the cooler.

The selection at this store is decent at best. However, you can find a much better selection at any of the four Apollo Liqour locations in Rochester. Andy's has a small section of singles; most of which are imports. About half of those imports are either pilsner or macro lagers like Red Stipe or Taj. They also have a small section devouted to domestic micros mostly locate stuff, with some Flying Dog, and Unita mixed in. I was more conceren with what they didn't have. No Bell's. No Rogue. WTF? If you are looking for a cold six pack, you might want to try somewhere else. The only craft brew they have refrigerated is Sam Adams. I have come here two or three times now, and the staff has neither been helpful nor rude. They seem to be there simply to run the registers. The quality of the beer I have bought from them has been good. However, the better selection and friendlier staff elsewhere will keep me from shopping here again.

I'm not sure this is the best beer store for the Rochester area, but there should be enough available that someone can get their beer needs met.
When I was last there, an evening in the middle of the week, there was a surplus of staff available looking to help. Selection is above average, but not outstanding. Many regionals available and many imports including some Belgians. Prices seem typical
This is the address for the main/original store. There is at least one other store in town and some expansion beyond Rochester.
