BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall
Massachusetts, United States | website

Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
“Spring” in New England is a fickle friend. So we brewed a beer that could carry us through the January cold while hinting at warmer days ahead. With notes of orange peel and coriander, the soft mouthfeel of a Belgian wit, and an intense hop profile, The Long Thaw White IPA combines the warming backbone of an IPA with citrus notes indicative of the coming spring. “Spring” in New England may be indecisive, but we can help make one decision a little easier.

Hazy gold with some sediment floating around in the beer. Thin white cap of fine bubbles, some lacing, decent head retention. Citrusy aroma, zest and grapefruit, fruity rather than pithy, hint of resin. The flavour was a bit sweet up front, a little malty, not much to get excited about. I enjoyed the finish much better. Lingering hop bitterness and citrus fruitiness showed up once the malt faded. Spiciness hung around for a while too. Hint of sourness and slickness. Moderate to high carbonation with medium/low body, Interesting, and pretty good.

This one goes into my glass with a 2 finger white head, semi hazed golden apricot body with fine speckled lacing as the head fades. Aromatics bring out spicy yeast notes, citrus peel, herbal/citric hop combo this one actually tastes quite nice with the first sip thoroughly enjoyed. Hints of tangerine, oranges on the palate bitter spicy yeast components citric hop bitterness and flavor combine with some coriander spice and wit characteristics along with elements of a decent IPA. Mouthfeel finishes dry and bitter between hops and the spice mix, medium bodied sturdy carbonation it really works for me. I'm a fan so easy to drink very refreshing great mix of different styles offered in some of Harpoon's mixed packs.

12 oz bottle, dated 15 April 2014, poured hazy golden-yellow with a thin weak head.

Aroma: citrus hops; hay: spicing including coriander.

Flavor: hop forward with orange-lemon-grapefruit fruitiness. Juicy and lightly spicy. . Moderate bitterness.

Feel: medium body and carbonation.

Like a lighter bodied version of their ipa. Very pleasant.

Appearance - Pours clear and golden yellow with a white, finger width head. Fair retention before dying down to a thin, broken layer of surface suds. Fair lacing with broken lines and a few spots.

Smell - Corriander hits the nose right off the bat with that spicy orange character. Underlying wheat. A touch of clove. Some lemony character.

Taste - Wheat is the predominant flavor here, with lesser notes of orange, corriander and faint clove spice. Mild lemon. Finish is bitter with lingering citrus pith.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Goes down fairly, with a mostly dry finish.

Overall - Fairly good White IPA. The flavors are there, but there's nothing particularly outstanding here. I could care less to drink it again, mostly because I'm not too big on the style, though there are exceptions.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a clear golden to light amber color with a large white head. The aroma is full of hops, citrus and pine (very nice). The taste is hop driven with some citrus.
