Take 5 Session IPATake 5 Session IPA
Notes: Harpoon Take 5 was first brewed on the Brewery’s 10-barrel system in early 2014. With each pilot batch the recipe was tweaked until the desired balance between hop aroma and malt character was achieved. This final version begins with a vibrant citrus and pine hop aroma from Simcoe and Amarillo hops and follows through with a sturdy malt profile from the combination of Pale, Vienna, Carapils, and English Amber malts. Hop forward but not too bitter, low ABV but with a significant malt body – a truly sessionable beer.

Light body with very slight haze and about a finger of foamy white head. The aroma is light. Notes of grass and subtle citrus and tropical notes (orange, passion fruit, mango). Taste is rather pleasant, more grassy hop flavors, grapefruit is more prevalent with a faint meyer lemon. The bitterness is very subdued for an IPA (especially compared to Stone's Go To). For 4.3 the beer has a better body than I would have expected. There's just enough cracker like backbone. The finish is too easy. This might be the easiest drinking session IPA I've had, which is a good thing because that's pretty much the point. This is one of the better session beers I've had recently. Overall this is impressive from Harpoon.

Keep in mind this is a session beer with only 4.3 ABV. That said, it was a well crafted brew that packed in a good amount of flavor. A nice orange hue in the glass, and a fresh if not overpowering aroma. I tasted orange peel or tangerine along with some piney hops. One of the better session beers I've had. I first had it at a festival and was not aware of its session status....I though it was a pretty good IPA.

Look - golden color with just a slight head and looks thin
Smell - fruity Mary Jane herbal scents
Taste - laid back less taste than smell. More herbal Mary Jane taste but with some grapefruit along with that. Slight toasted malts.
Feel - medium lite body and carbs
Overall - great session

Hmmmmm....84 is a bit low for this. As a session, I think the malt/hop combination is perfect. Citrus aroma, nothing to write home about. Full flavor. Citrusy/floral malts with a nice bread-y malt backbone. Medium bodied. Has just become one of my new favorite sessions.

A- drank directly out of bottle so not fair to say. Bottle is your typical Harpoon fare pretty cool. S- can smell those piney hops nicely. T- really like it. It's hoppy but had that real nice malt character and backbone. No overwhelming hops but still plenty for a sess ale. F- crisp, clean, exactly what I want in the style. O- I enjoy these low Abv sess beers and this is another great example from a really good brewery.

Pours a pale, opaque golden color with light carbonation seen floating to the top. A very small head on this pour. Light smell of floral hops and a sweet citrus smell are followed with a balanced malt-hop combo for taste. Not too a heavy tasting - a good beer for an early happy hour.

Excellent beer. Would like to see a bit more bite (Was a little less than I'd normally expect to taste) and ABV but puts off sweet aroma, great flavor and beautiful shine.
Love simcoe, one of my fav hops. I usually don't rank Harpoon beverages this high but this one is an exception. I will have again.

drinking this close to the enjoy by date, so may have to revisit it again with a fresher beer. looks nice in the glass. nose is subtle, but nice nonetheless. floral and pine scents are appreciable. the taste is quite good, has some citrus character and a nice light piney flavor. really really drinkable, which is its strongest attribute. I think the right balance between hop and malt was achieved. would recommend this one.

Harpoon Brewery "Take Five Session IPA"
12 oz. can, "ENJOY BY 09/15/15"... yesterday
$1.92 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Appearance: Hazy golden body beneath a full head of frothy white that holds quite well and leaves some very nice lacing behind. Allowing for the haze as dry-hopping can do that, it's a really nice looking glass of beer.

Aroma: Piney, grassy, and dank with some wet pine bark (I've never smelt that in a beer) and citrus pith, but also floral and spiked with citrus that's got lemon and tangerine as well as other tropical fruits (mango, melon). It's not particularly bold, and perhaps not even up to IPA levels - I've sampled pale ales that have a stronger olfactory presence than this - but there's something interesting about it. It's compelling in that way.

Flavor: The malt isn't very firm, but it somehow comes forward, and it's interestingly complex. The aforementioned hops follow with the tropical fruits dominating and some added peach and softly herbal notes as well as a touch of something that's almost like sugar coated berries. It's not particularly bitter, but at just 4.3% ABV it probably shouldn't be as there's not enough malt to support it.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium in body leaning towards medium-light, with a gentle caress of carbonation that leaves it quite smooth once warmed a bit.

Overall: My initial reaction to this was "Meh, there's something a little bit funky in the nose and not much behind it and I really couldn't care less" but the more I looked into it the more I found, and that complexity (I won't say depth) makes it really interesting. Additionally, for what it is, I thought that the body and the bitterness and the malt and hop characteristics all came together really nicely. I was also skeptical about the "IPA" part of the label, although I thought the "session" part was right on - but after thinking about it I can totally see it as a "Session IPA". There's a time and place for every beer, and I feel this one's got a lot of options. Worth trying!

Bottle enjoy by 9/15/15 so fresh enough.

Pours a nice large 2 finger fluffy creamy head that fades at a slower pace, nice soapy sticky lacing, hazy sediment laden golden honey color.

Nose brings musty dank hops, grassy and floral, with orange peel, dank tropical fruit notes, little guava and hint of melon rind, little musty orange pith and faint hint of pineapple and grapefruit I think.

Taste brings sweet malty character out front, a mild grainy sweet malt, into fruity hops, stone fruit, a little tropical generic, little musty tropical guava and grapefruit pith, melon rind and fruity bubblegum, with nice bitterness and grassy earthy hop notes, even a touch spicy, especially the finish which dries a bit and gets a little spicy hop note, more earthy and grassy, a little orange rind and generic fruit.

Mouth is med to lighter bod, decent carb

Overall decent, better than I expected, nice hop profile for being as light as it is, and some malts come through a bit, enjoyable and light.

Take 5? I think I will take 10 in the summer. What this beer lacks in the visual and smell appeal it makes up for in the taste. Comparable to the #2 friend in a group of girls. She’s not the star of the show, nor the one you’re initially attracted too, but give it time and you can’t keep your mind off her.

Pours a crystal clear goldn color with a generous soap bubbly head. Clung pretty well to the glass.

The smell is bright with grapefruit, a hint of resin, grassy, herbal. Light malt aroma and a little lemon peppery contribution as it warms a little.

Certainly lives up to being a session IPA. The flavors is light, mostly grapefruit, slight resin, slightly spicy. The malt is a bit light, but present. With continued drinkng, the flavor unfolds a bit more picking up some tropical notes and a mild level of sweetness. It is not highly bittered which is a good thing - bitterness ould be overwhelming.

It feels a bit too carbonated and maybe slightly bloating to me, but the taste is clear, crisp, with a mild peppery aftertaste that is quite pleasant.

Overall, this is an enjoyable beer to me. There is enough going on if you want to really dig in, but it is easy enough to just sit and drink if you don't. High likability factor for me. Is iit am IPA...well, maybe not in terms of what we have become used to these days. West coast more than east coast which is fine by me, but a certainly a light riff on the theme.

From the bottle, it pours a hazy amber with a moderate, fluffy, head. Lacing. Definitely hops in the nose, not too strong, but then the beer is not too strong. Pleasantly light hoppy flavor. Sessionable!
