Each spring Harpoon employees celebrating an anniversary (5th, 8th, 12th, etc.) are taken on a weeklong overseas “beer trip.” The 2015 Harpoon beer trip to Germany inspired our latest 100 Barrel Series creation. One night in Dusseldorf, a group of Harpooners on the trip spent the evening trying altbiers in an outdoor beer garden. They kept their friendly server busy adding notches to their coasters with every round, and the lively conversations with friends and locals kept them jovial all night. There was one version of alt in particular, the Sticke Alt, that stood out. Sticke means “secret” because those who brew it keep the recipe a secret. The beer and the evening left a lasting impression. The group came home wanting to recreate that unforgettable night in Dusseldorf for themselves and their friends.

A more formidable version of the beloved alt style, this Sticke Alt has a medium-full body, a rich, complex flavor, and a clean German yeast character.

From the 650 ml. bottle with an Enjoy By date of 09-15-16. Sampled on July 16, 2016.

It is a handsome looking dark amber tone with reddish hues but a short-lived head.

The aroma is sweet malt forward with a kind of molasses or tobacco sensation in the mix. Low to no hop profile.

The body is smooth and medium.

The taste also has a sweet malt and tobacco flavor with a mild bitterness to finish. But the pipe tobacco character is what I will remember about this beer henceforth.

Picked up a bomber in mid-September from the TW Arrowhead Discount rack for $1.99.

Beer poured amber with a nice white head that left lacing behind.

Nose has some fruity esters from the german yeast strain.

Taste is pretty well balance between the toasted malt base and noble hops. A nice light and dark fruit flavor is subtly in the background of each sip.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth.

Overall a pretty good beer that my father in law and i enjoyed!

Pours amber with thin tan cap. Aroma is caramel and lightly toasted malts. Flavor is similar with a really nice balance of caramel sweet offset by just the right amount of hop to finish clean. Very tasty, very smooth. I'll need to find this again.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Darker reddish brown with a thin beige head.

Smell: Light maltsweeter.

Mouthfeel/ Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of sweeter malts and alcohol.

Overall: Great beer, sweeter than I expected with a bitter aftertaste. Good fall beer.

On-tap 9/11/2016 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in North Attleboro, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains caramelized malts, some fruit and some hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, fruit and brown sugar. Then some breadiness comes in from a hearty malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.

A selection from Harpoon's 100 Barrel Series (#57), Sticke Alt, which means "secret" alt. They came up with this after their annual beer trip, this time to Köln, Düsseldorf, Bottrop, Munster, and Oelde. Color is a lot like a brown ale. Small head with moderate carbonation. Smell is light caramel and malty sweetness. Taste: nice biscuity malt with the right amount of bitterness, especially in the finish. Pretty damn good alt beer. Gets an A- from me.
