BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall

Style: English India Pale Ale (IPA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
We started brewing this beer as a summer seasonal in 1993. There were some great IPAs out in the Pacific Northwest, but no local IPAs on the east coast. We wanted to have a local IPA, so we brewed one. People absolutely loved it, and so did we. So we made it a year-round beer, and it’s now our bestselling beer and our flagship.

Since its introduction, Harpoon IPA has remained unique in its ability to balance hop bitterness with a strong malt backbone. Dry-hopped with Cascade hops, it has a floral hop aroma and a finish that is bitter (it is an IPA after all!) without being harsh or astringent. Combined with a malty sweetness and the fruity esters of our proprietary yeast, those hops create a beer that is wonderfully hoppy but clean and refreshing enough to enjoy a few of - and we hope you do.

A very decent IPA- good looking, crisp and true to form. The cloudy golden pour let loose some spicy hops- nice smack on the tongue at first taste, good quality hops and not overdone on the malts. A good starter for the new hop heads, goes well with most anything you can eat and well balanced for maximum drinkability. Try the oak aged brew by Harpoon for some more complexity.

Impressive in the area's that count...being taste and drinkability.
Arrived a darkish golden colour with a slight haze. Head was short and quick to depart. Carbonation was very light and the body a medium/full.
Nose was non-descript.
My initial response to the taste was not favourable but that quickly changed with each taste...this brew can grow on ya real fast.
Starts with a minor in a citrus like hops then explodes to reveal its true character of hop mania with very little linger. I want more!!
Great potential for a session beer

nice looking amber ale with decent white head. fresh flowery hops define the smell. the taste starts with flowery citrus hops up front with slight toasted caramel malt background. medium bodied with good carbonation and a clean finish. not bad at all, but on tap this is significantly better.

I've had this in many different formats. I have been enjoying this beer for a long time, I can't believe that I haven't reviewed it!

A - Pours a medium orange color with about 2 fingers of off white head.

S - A bit floral, a bit of fruitiness, a bit of piney resin. Pretty mild smell, but pretty standard for its ABV.

T - Much like the smell. A good amount of all three of those flavors. There is an unfortunate amount of bitterness in the finish, though. It's not enough to take a huge chunk out of the beer, but it's good.

M - The mouthfeel is pretty much what I would expect. It's fairly carbonated, but not overly so.

Overall, this is a very solid beer. Considering the price, this beer is constantly stocked in my fridge.

A: Pours a clear copper colorwith a good head that fades to some lacing

S: A nice mixture of citrus & malt aroma with a bit of fresh grain. Not overpowering.

T: A mild taste of malt & citrus. A clean bitterness and a crisp finish.

F: Medium body, quite smooth and refreshing. A well balanced brew.

D: Very enjoyable, a good IPA that is not overhopped or overhyped. Check it out.

A deep golden straw color with a thick off white head that makes nice lace on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, and a hint of bread and maybe a note of sweet peaches . Flavor is piny faintly citrus over a light toasted and biscuity malt taste. The palate is medium bodied with good carbonation and a hopy bitterness that lingers on the tongue. A very sessionable and enjoyable beer that was fun to try.

It certainly does assault you on first whiff and taste. Had it last night for the first time and ended up carrying out the box this morning. Not that I was responsible for the whole thing. Hoppy as sin, kinda bready and skanky on the nose. Didn't hold a held but plenty of carbonation.

This one is copper colored with a large white head.

The aroma is of hops and a bit of citrus.

Its flavor is hopy with a citrus aftertaste. It’s also a bit grassy.

The mouth feel is surprisingly light for an IPA and is nice and refreshing. It’s nothing amazing, but much better than I was expecting. It’s worth a try.

This beer poured a thick white head with a bright and clear yellowish/orange body.

The nose was a mix of biscuit malt, fresh caramel malt, and a sharp fruity hop with a touch of fine citrus.

Medium bodied with a quick, slightly sour, hop taste and bitterness. Definitely a BIG grainy earth and citrus dry hop taste. Rich malt, caramel, biscuit, Munich. A mix of hops abound in this beer. Some classic English touches as well as American IPA notes. From start to finish there’s an intense in your face bitterness.

This should be the official beer of Boston. A perfect combo of big American IPA’s and British pale ales. One of the best Boston session beers ever.

12 oz bottle, funked out label, fresh by date of 07/15/10.

I don't see the beer as "copper" like the label claims, more of a deep gold color. Off-white head leaves whole rings of stick around the glass. Very clear with slow carbonation trails. Smell is a bit maltier than other IPA's I've tried. Very good combo of fresh grains and tropical, sweet hops. Taste mirrors the smell, and adds a new hops depth with some sour bitterness. Finishes tight with a defined alcohol feel. All in all, a solid IPA that I can see myself getting a few more of.

Amber color with a big white head. A flowery bitter aroma. The beer flows a light to medium body on the palate. Flavor starts sweet and biscuity with hops building at the end. Flowery citrus and bitter at the finish.

This is a solid IPA and a great session beer.

Nothing like relaxing on a Saturday afternoon when all the errands are done and having a beer. Had this at the NEBF and a bar in Boston that weekend. Finally saw it at a local liquor store.

12 ounce bottle poured into a British Imperial pint glass.

A - A very nice look for the style. About a shade between copper and golden, with a nice foamy white head that sticks to the glass.

S - A very nice citric hop smell on the initial whiff. The bitterness takes the forefront here but doesn't completely dominate. A tiny bit of sweet malty flavor lingers under the hops.

T - The hops are the leader on the taste as well. A nice bitterness comes through the mouth with the malts making a little appearance but "staying in there place". Dry on the finish with the tiniest bit of hop bitterness/citrus flavor lingering.

M - Feels good throughout the whole drink. A fairly thin consistency but nice nonetheless.

D - Very good. A sessionable IPA because it doesn't overpower the senses. It still has enough flavor to be enjoyed on it's own or with a meal.

I had this while I was in Boston. It had a nice colour and decent head but what I really liked about it was the hops. I wish we could get this in Ottawa. There's just too many lagers and eastern European blonde beers in this town.

It seems like there are a lot of great IPAs and APAs down south.

This is a great beer. As far as IPA's go, I would consider it right in front of the middle of the road candidates. It has a great floral nose, however, it leaves you wanting more, not much, but wanting more. Considering all the IPA's that are out there, that really deliver a hoppy punch, Harpoon kind of drinks more like a lager. Delicious for all cuisine and all seasons. I rate it high because it is a great "go-to" if your local store lacks selection, if your local is on the eastern seaboard of course.

Appearance - Clear deep-gold with very little head.

Smell - Mild hops with perhaps a light malt undertone and that's about it. Pleasant but weak nose.

Taste - Mild hoppy taste that is well balanced. Not overly sophisticated, but most IPA's aren't. It's slightly underpowered, but seems to make a good session beer.

Mouthfeel - Thin and crisp, rather light body, with a very slight but pleasant bite.

Drinkability - For an IPA it is underpowered, this makes this a wonderful session beer. Remarkably refreshing for an IPA.

A nice balance of hops and malt with a pleasant copper color. Nothing fancy here, just a good clean consistent ale. This is my everyday always on hand ale. Refreshing and thirst quenching and readily available on the East Coast.

Poured an attractive golden/amber color with a nice pillowy white head that lasted until the very last sip. Nice lacing also. Aroma was a mix of malt and light floral hops. Taste was a very nice balance of malt and hops. This is not the hop bomb that is characteristic of many American IPAs. This is nicely balanced and sessionable.

Off the tap at Boulevard Tavern in Brooklyn, it was completely clear, no bubbles, brownish in color. Good IPA smell to it.

Taste pretty good, like you would expect from an IPA. Leaves a nice little bitter taste in back of the mouth. Doesn't bite too much, just enough.

This is a really good IPA. I think I would've enjoyed it more if it was fresher off the tap.

On-tap poured into a mug

A - Crystal clear copper color, little head, no real lacing; looks okay

S - A nice smell; fairly solid mix of malt and hops; some citrus scent; nothing necessarily particularly unique, but a nice smell

T - Mostly hoppy flavor comes through a lot stronger than the scent might suggest; grapefruit and some floral esters; a hint of sweet malt as well, but the flavors a solid one for a good IPA

M - Medium body, good carbonation, solid aftertaste

D - A solid beer; it's just basically a good IPA with a nice all-around solid flavor but nothing particularly unique; it's almost a archetype for that IPA taste
