Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
UFO Hefeweizen is an American unfiltered wheat beer. Perhaps UFO’s initial sensory perception is also its most prominent: a cloudy golden color and a dense, frothy head. The yeast, which has not been filtered out, accounts for the cloudiness of UFO. Wheat malt tends to create a larger head than barley malt, the cereal grain most often used in brewing. When served in a traditional wheat beer glass with a lemon, UFO presents an appealing and distinctive visual image.

The aroma has a faint but clear citrus-like character. This is produced by the special yeast and accounts for the Bavarian tradition of serving hefeweizens with a lemon. The lemon accentuates the yeast’s fruity, tart fragrance. UFO has a soft mouthfeel and a refreshing, light body. The wheat malts and subtle hopping give the beer a mild, delicate flavor. UFO has a clean finish. Unlike some imported hefeweizens, UFO does not have the spicy, tropical flavors typical of European-brewed style.

Smells of pilsner malt, green apple, and a little vodka.
Very refreshing, lacks much yeast induced character though. Taste is a little disapointing, malt and hopping seems more like a macro pilsner than a wheat, but lacks the crispness of a pilsner. A little bit of a fresh wheat aftertaste but not much at all.
This beer does not hold much water to most german hefeweizens, but as an american attempt at a wheat beer, it seems a little out of place. But I could slam these all night if I wanted to.

A real popular hefeweizen here, surprised it took me so long so have this one. It's not real traditional, but is quite mild, and as such should appeal to the newer or timid daft beer drinker. A craft converter from something like a sock top too I think. Pale color, almost milky looking, without the usual tall white fluffy head I like to see in this style. Smells good though, light fruitiness, pear more than the standard banana. Some spice, but again, this is incredibly mild on the yeast front. Lighter white wheat malt base too, Ben without filtration it is light and easy drinking, and mellow on flavor. The low alcohol, high carbonation, and clean easy body make it a really crushable beer, especially in the summer when it's hot and the beer is frosty cold. I do not think this is a great American example of the hefe style though, there are far better, despite its popularity. It's also far from the best beer these guys make, I love their hoppy stuff. A lighter easier going offering that may appeal to the fringes, but the seasoned hefeweizen drinker will be largely unenthused.

Minimally cloudy maize. I managed to get all but an ounce into the glass on the first pour and still don't see any yeast. Maybe a superfine haze, but that's it. The cap is aged parchment in color, is nicely sticky and is laying down thick sheets of lace. The head and lace look so good that I won't mark down the appearance score because this U(n) F(iltered) O(ffering) is nearly clear.

The nose is pleasant in an untoasted, lemon-scented wheat and barley sort of way. That's all I can reasonably ask of my American pale wheats since they don't have the advantage of banana and clove esters that result from a true hefe weizen yeast.

UFO is a better than average version. Without a boatload of hops (Gumballhead), it's difficult to make an APWA stand out in a crowd. This one gets by on its wheatiness and a lightly lemony yeast strain. It's a bit harsh and grainy though; not as soft and refined in the mouth as it could be.

The beer is bitter, tangy and sweet (in that order), pretty much the exact opposite of how I prefer my wheat beers--both hefes and pale wheats--to be. Actually, I like tangy and sweet to share the spotlight. Still though, this is a well-brewed beer that should fit any number of situations quite well.

I'm not overjoyed with the body/mouthfeel and blame it, in part, for the harshness that I'm experiencing. Wheats ought to be soft and lush in the mouth and this one is neither. I'd like to see a slightly bigger body and a few less bubbles. Edit: as the beer sits, the mouthfeel improves noticeably.

Perhaps it's time for an overhaul in terms of style naming. This beer is as much a hefe (yeast) weizen (wheat) as any of the offerings from Germany. It's just that it doesn't use those Bavarian yeasties that are so distinctive in terms of banana and clove esters. In other words, Harpoon has every right to call this beer what they've called it. I propose American Hefe Weizen instead of American Pale Wheat Ale.

UFO Hefeweizen is a decent version of an American hefe. Although it could stand to be a little more refined, I could see myself buying a sixer now and then, especially in warmer weather. The only problem is, I don't recall hearing about any UFO sightings in Iowa.

Hazy golden orange with creamy white head. Left a ring of lace at the top of the pour.
Banana and spice aroma
Fruity taste, quite nutty as well, slightly spicy all over a wheat grain background. Slight citrus bitterness.
The feel is on the strong side of light. UFO is quite cleansing and easy to drink, good with spicy foods.
I liked it better on draught, better in hot weather than in november, but it's still good all the time.

Poured out of a 12oz bottle into a pint.

A - Clear. Light. Decent head and lacing.

S - Pretty plain. Nothing really sticks out too much.

T - See above. Maybe a light bit of typical wheat beer characteristics, but this is pretty damn boring.

M - Light. Crisp, maybe a little zingy. Seems to be very little, if any aftertaste.

D - This is the most redeeming quality. These go down extremely easy.

This is the first Harpoon beer I've had in a few years. Either I'm spoiled by all of the "good" beer I've been drinking or they've lost a step with the rest of the craft brewers out there.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Hazy golden, with a big, billowy head of foam.
Aroma-Wheat, faint spice
Taste-Big wheat flavor, subtle lemon zest
Overall, very drinkable and refreshing, however a little muted on flavor. A nice Hefe in any case.

Pale golden yellow in color. Fairly hazy in appearance. Flavors of banana, lemon and Belgian yest esters. Tastes like a somewhat traditional hefe except less flavorful. Not bad on a hot day.

UFO pours a nice cloudy colour, with a small head that does not last long. It smells of cloves, esters, banana, and dough...it has a very nice bouquet. The taste is what one would expect from an american wheat beer, but it is a little less than one may expect. It is very ligh on the tongue, and very high on drinkability. This one really reminds me of Sam Adams summer, or Sam Adams cranberry lambic, 86 the cranberry flavor.
A pretty good stab at the style from the people @ Harpoon!

Appearance is a cloudy yellow/amber

not much of an aroma..slight hint of banana

this hefeweizen pales in comparison to others i have tried. not much flavor, pretty bland actually. I have come to like the hefeweizen style of beer. (Long Trail makes one of the best I have tried) but I will take this one off of ,y list of beers to drink.

Very disappointing brew from a good brewery.

The UFO from Harpoon poured a cloudy dull yellow in color. Lots of sediment in the glass but it's very, very fine, making it impossible to pick out the individual yeast particles. Thick and creamy white lace dies quickly away to just a miniscule layer. Decent lacing of the glass. Aromas are lacking. No bannanas or fruity esters noted. Almost exclusively a "wheaty" aroma. Not much else. Flavor is more of the same. The wheat flavor dominates, with just a token bit of zesty spice to liven things up. Finishes dry with a bit hop snap at the end. Mouthfeel and drinkability are good. Smooth on the palate with just the right dryness to quench the thirst. Great summer beer. Lower end of the ABV scale means you have more than a few after a hot summer's day of work.

I this UFO straight from a 12 ounce bottle. It had a nice aroma characteristic of other hefeweizens I have had. The aroma was jsut strong enough without being overpowering. The taste was a bit sweeter than what I was expecting. This was nice because it added a little twist to an original. What I thought was interesting was I had a strawberry soda before and they didn't mix well at all. Don't drink and review.

Poured into a Weizen glass.Pours a hazy pale golden color with a fluffy white heading that sticks around until about half way down then turns flat.

Smell is very sweet. A very yeasty beer indeed and a bit fruity in the nose too.

Taste is very light, very yeasty with a nice hop profile that lingerie's around a little while along with yeast.

Mouth leaves a funny graininess taste in the mouth, good carbonation-medium bodied.

Drinkability is great. This will immediately find it's way into my summer collections.

Pale golden in color. Clear before adding the small amount of yeast at the bottom of the bottle. White head of good size and retention.

Aroma is quite lemony. Grainy malt and wheat. Smells tart and crisp. A chemical like smell became more evident as the beer warmed.

Taste shows a grainy malt and wheat backbone. Lemony. Light and refreshing. Tart and somewhat crisp. Only slight yeast notes. Readily evident chemical like flavor detracts from the beer.

Solid mouthfeel and drinkability.
Overall, a solid American style hefeweizen.

Had this recently at a local pub...

Unfiltered wheat beers are a favorite of mine. So I had to at least give it a shot.

I don't want to knock this beer, I did enjoy it. It just kind of let me down. The flavor was weak, not subtle, more-so a watered down weakness.

I will probably give this another shot to be fair. If the taste was not so bland and a little more complex, this could make a good session beer. Easy to drink. .
