UFO HefeweizenUFO Hefeweizen

Brewed by:
Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall
Massachusetts, United States

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
UFO Hefeweizen is an American unfiltered wheat beer. Perhaps UFO’s initial sensory perception is also its most prominent: a cloudy golden color and a dense, frothy head. The yeast, which has not been filtered out, accounts for the cloudiness of UFO. Wheat malt tends to create a larger head than barley malt, the cereal grain most often used in brewing. When served in a traditional wheat beer glass with a lemon, UFO presents an appealing and distinctive visual image.

The aroma has a faint but clear citrus-like character. This is produced by the special yeast and accounts for the Bavarian tradition of serving hefeweizens with a lemon. The lemon accentuates the yeast’s fruity, tart fragrance. UFO has a soft mouthfeel and a refreshing, light body. The wheat malts and subtle hopping give the beer a mild, delicate flavor. UFO has a clean finish. Unlike some imported hefeweizens, UFO does not have the spicy, tropical flavors typical of European-brewed style.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Cloudy light copper color with a smaller amount of white head, almost no lacing.

Smell: Wheat and banana, some hints of citrus.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Medium bodied, smooth but fizzy like a soda. Taste of grassy wheat with some banana and clove notes.

Overall: Enjoyable beer, cannot complain, can't really think of any improvment though...

L – Pale gold color with a 1-finger white bubbly head that fades pretty quickly. No lacing. Clear at the beginning of the pour but picks up some haze from the sediment at the bottom of the bottle. While it was clear, a moderate amount of bubbles were visible.

S – Grainy wheat and spicy yeast take the forefront. There’s maybe a bit of lemon here, too, but it’s very scant compared to the wheat and yeast.

T – Follows the nose pretty much exactly. Sweet cereal malts with a touch of lemon primarily at the start. The baton gets handed off to the grainy wheat and spicy yeast flavors at the finish.

F – Light-bodied with good carbonation, a crisp mouthfeel, and a sweet, grainy finish. The grainy wheat taste lingers for a short amount of time.

O – This beer is alright. It has the skeleton of a pale wheat ale, but nothing really stands out. It’s also far too plain and light for my taste. The mouthfeel lacks that creaminess that good wheat ales possess. I know that it’s only semantics, but Harpoon has no business calling this a hefeweizen. American pale wheat ales should not have the clove and banana aromas or flavors that good German hefeweizens have, so it’s not fair to put them in the same category. Also, if they were trying to make a hefeweizen instead of an American pale wheat ale, they failed miserably. This is a decent beer, especially for the summer, but I probably won’t seek it out again.

12oz bottle from CJ's Potsdam NY for 2$

Appearance – Hazy amber colour with a huge size fizzy white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Grains/wheat, citrus, corn

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation. I can taste grains/bread mixed with light lemon and con syrup. There is also a touch of pepper and yeast and very faint banana. It ends with a grainy aftertaste.

Overall – Doesn't really taste like a wheat beer to me. The flavours are way too subtle. Either way, it's pretty boring and I wouldn't pick this up again.

I suppose I like my hefeweizens to have some taste to them. A little clove or banana esters would have been nice with this one. It's a decent beer for warm weather, but it's too tasteless for my liking. Personally, I don't like this trend in commercial beers of brewing hefeweizens without the estery goodness. I see that one of The Bros' reviewed this in 2001 and he said it was one of the best examples of an American wheat. The recipe must have changed from 11 years ago. This is not a good representation of a hefeweizen and should be avoided if you want to enjoy and appreciate the style.

This is good, worth having. Wheat beer isn't really gonna suck, but it can be "safe" which I think this one is. Much like shock top without the big factory taste and just all around more quality. This is no German hefeweizen, but it's good.
Head is nice and lingers on top of the cloudy orangish body.
Smells wheaty and yeasty. Sweet and a little fruity.
Taste is a subtle bitterness suppressed by the huge bready and wheaty character that is common of wheat beers. Citrusy and crisp.
I'd have this again.

Poured in a Paddy Irish Whiskey stange.

Smelled of the traditional Hefeweizen. Citrusy with a hint of lemon/orange.

Poured a golden haze.

Taste was delicious. A great hefeweizen. If you like Shocktop you'll definitely enjoy this.

I believe this is a well done rendition of a hefeweizen and something I would purchase again. A tad pricey though

This beer pours up with an enormous head with lots of lacing. Color is a hazy straw color with a strong smell of wheat. Mouthfeel is a pretty thin and the taste is uncomplex with a little bit of hoppiness. Not bad, but nothing extra-special here either.

Fan of the label. This one is mediocre.

A: golden yellow with a small head

S. Faint almost non-existent banana. Hardly any wheat or yeast flavor.

T: very light bodied Hef. Sorta watered down taste.

M: slightly bitter, light, watery. Nothing stands out about this beer.

O: Yeah, I'd drink again on a hot, summer, Texas day. I wouldn't turn it down but, I probably wouldn't buy it. It drinks very fast due to the lack of flavors. Blue Moon has more of a wheat taste.

A: The beer is hazy light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin white head that quickly died down but consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of wheat in the nose along with some notes of lemon citrus.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has flavors of wheat and notes of lemon citrus.
M: It feels light-bodied and a bit thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a great summer beer to have more than one of because it is easy to drink, refreshing and has some thirst-quenching properties.

I always have been a huge fan of unfiltered beer... and hefeweizen... so this was a natural choice at the grocery store.

Appearance - a great orange/brown cloudy hue that lets you know from the start that this ain't your daddy's double filtered beer.

Smell - I was really hoping for more of a scent to this beer. When I popped it open no great whiffs came out. It smells vaguely of minerals and wheat.

Taste - This beer didn't disappoint on the taste. Not as sweet as a Shiner Hefe or 102 but a wide flavor that strectches from a mellow sweet to a hoppy bliss.

Mouthfeel - Not much carbonation here but the interesting aftertaste of mineral water hits you instead. It's not a bad feeling but more of a new one for me and I enjoy it!

Overall - This is a nice unfiltered beer. I enjoy Shiner's verison more but they don't do the cloudy goodness like this one.

Harpoon again delivers another solid beer. The UFO Hefeweizen is a solid Hefeweizen with good flavor. The unfiltered Hefeweizen gives it the smooth yet unique flavor that UFO beers provide. Again I enjoy drinking this during the summer while grilling out. It is light enough that you can just enjoy the smooth flavor with just about any dish in the summer.

Poured from a bottle into a weisse glass, the beer is a pale, unfiltered, hazy, yellowish coloring with a frothy, light, foamy white head that starts strong but settles into a bubbly film. Signs of strong carbonation throughout the beer's body, and nothing left along the glass as you go. Aromas of bread, clove, banana, and some light peppering. The beer's flavors are mild, and the body is smooth, but slightly sharp at the end from the carbonation. Palate of slight citrus highlights along the banana bread backbone, with some spicy notes throughout the keep it clean. The aftertaste is more of the spicing, and again it's a bit sharp from the effervescent and carbonated body. The finish is quick and clean. Easy enough to drink, that's for sure.

Had on tap at Bert's Landing, Plymouth

Appearance: minimal head, golden in color, hazy, moderate carbonation

Smell: light wheat--very weak smelling

Taste: orange, lemon, cardamom, coriander--standard witbier taste

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, medium-light bodied, sweet with light bitterness at the end

Overall: Slightly below average American Pale Wheat Ale. Not really distinguishable or memorable a beer. Not so bad that I would turn it away, but there are plenty others in the style I would go to first.

This beer pours a clear yellow with 1 finger head and lasting lace. The aroma is of banana, dough, and vanilla. The flavor is subdued banana and mild lemon with a cake background. The mouthfeel is light-medium and smooth. Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen is a good beer. Recommended.

Harpoon UFO has a thick, fluffy, white head and a cloudy, golden appearance with a bit of lacing left down the glass. The aroma is lemony and white wheat bread, and the flavor is slightly lemony, wheaty, bread crust, and faintly bitter. Lots of carbonation is found with this one. Mouthfeel is medium, and Harpoon UFO finishes mostly dry, refreshing, and very easy drinking. To me, it’s more similar to regular beer than wheat beer. Overall, it’s a good beer.

Appearance: Straw yellow, maybe a touch darker, and cloudy. The head is virtually non-existent and dissipates rapidly with no lacing.

Smell: Can of corn, slightly yeasty.

Taste: Sweet and malty, like a really sweet malt liquor. It's too sweet, as if it had Sweet & Low in it.

Mouthfeel: Thin, watery, boring.

This beer tastes like a sweet malt liquor and is really crappy. Most any beer is better than this unless it's a malt liquor.

The best by date on the bottle reads 11-15-11 and it is currently 1-12-12, so it may affect my review.. but it still seems pretty fresh.

Appearance - Pours a very light, hazy yellow-straw color with a centimeter thick head that dissipates instantly. Has pretty nice lacing.

Smell - Wheat, citrus, and lemon citrus.

Taste - Caramel, wheat, citrus, and pale malts. Has a pretty bitter aftertaste and an alcohol bite.

Mouhfeel - Light body with medium carbonation. This beer is pretty watered down..

Overall - It's lacking a lot of flavor.. either because my bottle is old or this beer is just very simple.

This hefe makes its living by being overwhelmingly inoffensive to the drinker.

Color- a beautiful hazy light yellow.

Smell- sweetness,subtle tropical, citrusy fruit

Taste- incredibly light malt, paired with the same fruitiness smelled, all of this is very slight, theres not much there intensity wise.

Mouthfeel- mouthfeel is where its at with this one. Its almost as if there is no resistance at all to downing this beer. Smooth, creamy, sudsy, slick and effortless as anything ive ever tried. Lack of bitter seems to make this beer one of the easiest drinks ive.ever had.

Overall- the light tastes that are there and are palatable make this beer effortless because once its sitting in your mouth its going down easy and quick.

A bottle from a trade with SonofaLime, thanks Mike!

Poured into my beer goblet. The best before date was 11/15/11, so I am a little out of date on this one, take the review with a grain of salt.

Appearance: Very hazy pale straw with a white head that settled very quickly to leave a thin ring around the edge.

Smell: Wheat corn, lighter grains in general. A little yeast in the nose. Pleasant, but not at all strong or assertive. No hop notes to speak of.

Taste: Some mild citrus to go along with a mild wheat. The yeast is not filtered out of this beer and does not seem out of place. What I mean is that the yeast does not contribute any noticeable taste characteristics that seem out of place. A solid tasting beer, but nothing spectacular.

Mouthfeel: The finish is short on this beer. The mild flavors do coat the tongue nicely, but do not last very long. The carbonation is strong and prickly here.

Overall: A decent wheat beer. I would have this one again. It could be offered to a person who is new to craft beer without overwhelming their tastebuds.

Haven't had Harpoon in quite awhile so I thought I'd give it a try. I really like the label. Poured into my Duvel tulip. Nice fluffy head and inviting citrus aroma. Nice wheat flavor with not much hops. Tiny bit of banana clove which may be more noticeable in a fresher bottle. Nice light clean taste which was very easy to drink would enjoy a sixer in the summer.

A-Cloudy yellow, two finger head, carbonated and it stays around but no lacing.

S-Wheat and lemon but the lemon seems to be slightly artificial.

T-Wheat and lemon mainly, it isn't as artificial as the nose but also not much in the way of hops.

M-Light and carbonated.

O-A run of the mill APWA, could use some more hops but a easy drinker and rather sessionable.

Pours a cloudy dark gold color with a thin white ehad that dissipates fairly quickly and leaves a little lacing.

Faint aroma of citrus and wheat upfront.

A lot of wheat upfront in the taste with lighter notes of lemon, some orange and a hint of honey.

Light bodied with medium carbonation. Good overall but much better hefes available so not something I'm likely to go back to.

Poured into a standard pint glass. Slightly opaque, straw-colored, very little head that dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing. Despite the lack of head, it looks appetizing.

Smells of wheat with a very slight hint of alcohol. Not terrible, but not great.

Tastes slightly too acidic and a little too yeasty. That said, this is a pretty mellow offering. Hint of citrus flavor (apart from the acidity). It's a nice taste, but it has some flaws too.

Nice mouthfeel--thick, creamy foam on a swish, good body with the right amount of bite for an unfiltered wheat.

Overall, this is a nice beer. It has its problems, but it's a solid brew.

Pours a golden copper color. The head is thin, white and dissipates quickly. It's opaque, but it's not hazy or cloudy.

Not a lot in the nose. There's a citrus scent, but that's about all.

The wheat is obvious, but fighting for attention in the background seems to be some lemon and honey.

It's a bit light bodied, but it starts off slightly sweet before ending with a sour, tangy, ever so slightly bitterness.

Not really a bad beer, just not the best hefe out there.
