Pours a ruby red deep plum color leaving a thick tan head frothy and inviting. The aroma is all bock sweet dark pitted fruit. Caramel, plums, prunes, tart sweet earthy gentle aromas.

The taste is tarter than expected followed by a medicinal, herbal, grape juice taste, plum, prune juice with a vague hoppy essence decent brew.

22 ouncer, typical Harpoon 100 Barrel Series presentation. Pours darker amber, clear, under a quickly departing tan head, then leaving next to no lacing. Vanilla, ripe bananas and fruity esters in the nose. Another middle of the road offering here, it continues to be disappointing that Harpoon doesn't put more into these efforts. I guess I should have lowered my expectations by now. Anyway, I get more bananas, vanilla and rich and warming malt notes. But all in all, something missing here, just kind of dull and lifeless in the glass and on the taste buds.

I poured this from a 750 ml bottle back in early 2008? (this review is taken from my notes)

Nice brown head, dark red color
definitely banana aroma, banana tastes... esters?
full taste of a good bock, but citrus crispness of a hefeweizen. nice fruity taste, but not overbearing. Delicious beer. highly recommended.

I just picked this one up in Atlanta, and I was very happy to see the 100 Barrel series showing up there. Nice!

There wasn't much C02 released when I popped the cap. It poured a nice deep, clear, amber color, but there wasn't much of a head at all which isn't surprising considering the weak CO2 release. The flavors which include clove and banana are actually pretty nice and very appropriate for the style. Thankfully there's not a nasty band-aid phenolic like I've encountered in some other attempts at the weizenbock style. Unfortunately, the carbonation is quite low in this brew. (I noticed another reviewer saying his bottle was overcarbonated...strange!) Because of my bottle's low carbonation, it has a very heavy mouthfeel with a somewhat overbearing, cloying, sweet flavor. That's a shame because a stronger carbonation would certainly help to balance things out here. This is no Aventinus, but it's not a failure either. I drank the whole bottle, but I wouldn't buy this same beer again. However, if I could somehow be assured of buying a bottle with more carbonation, I would give it another go.

Oh well, this was very cool to try! Bring on more of the 100 Barrel series! (I wish all breweries would do that sort of thing.)

Poured a clear dark tea color with very little head to speak of.

Aroma is caramel malty with some tropical fruit...pineapple maybe.

Taste is rich caramel malts, very light fruitiness, and bready yeast.

Mouthfeel is adequate although possible a sense of being thin because the wheat works very well at drying your palette as soon as you swallow. I think it is more an impression than actually being thin. Some nice hops bitterness follows everything and keeps this beer surprisingly clean and dry in your mouth when you consider the large amount of sugary, caramel malts in the brew.

Really nice take on something unusual. Nice afterdinner or desert brew.

A brownish mahogony with ruby red highlights, big, spacious bubbles create a fine, bubbly white head that dissipates rather quickly.

Spicey banana with cloves and nutmeg is the dramatic German yeast I can smell right off, winter green and butterscotch malt follows with minimal amounts of herbs and black pepper hop scent. Heavy on the spicey banana!

This medium bodied, crisp but sticky feeling Weizenbock features a spicey, herbal banana-chai flavor followed by a smooth malty butterscotch over wheat effect that adds serious layers to the flavor, as does the big 7.8 % abv.. The balance of herbal, spiciness, smooth malt and slight fruitiness is really very good. As the flavors blend together on the taste buds you can pick out certain aspects that stand out, amoung these is the belgian-candy like sweetness and then hearty herbal finsih.

The overall effect is very pleasant, big malt, smooth and sweet with a light wheat effect that becomes serious and sticky. I dig it. And I think I'm starting to feel the nice warming balance of the 7.8 % ABV!

Pours a clear brownish/mahogony with a small white head that disappears quickly and leaves almost no lacing. The smell is pretty strong with roasted malt,dark fruits,and alcohol. The taste is like the smell,plenty of malt,dark fruits,alcohol,banana,and clove. Not bad,but not really all that exciting either. The m/f is light with all the flavors mixing well. A decent brew,but like I said, nothing all that great.

Color of brandy, a glassy reddish copper that exhibits excellent clarity. The off-white head isn't big and doesn't stick around long.

Aroma is a mixed bag...mostly good, as the banana scent is huge. Clove is also mentioned on the label and indeed that solidly backs up the banana, so there's no false advertising here. A nice sweetness somewhere between caramel and chocolate gives the nose further reasons to dig right in and sniff like there's no tomorrow. However, there's a medicinal sharpness overlying these more attractive smells, so the alcohol needs to be reeled in a bit. Had it been tamed, I would've easily scored this higher.

Flavor is pretty much what can be gleaned from the aroma. Banana, clove, caramel, chocolate, dark fruit and alcohol. And like the nose, a good bit of alcohol, but here it works (and it's true to style). At 7.8% I wouldn't expect a booze-bomb, and it's not, rather giving a glowing hit of warmth to the key flavors. Malty goodness wins out. If you want an easy-going sipping beer (ie. not a Grand Cru Barrel-Aged Quadrupel Barleywine or some such thing), this is your ticket.

Mouthfeel stays on the lighter, airy side, with just a tad too much carbonation zip, edging it toward soda territory, but that's not a major deterrent.

Good stuff that is most definitely not for pounding. A slow sipper, not because it's the biggest beer ever, but due to its medicinal alcohol presence. Let it warm, give it a few good swirls, contemplate, and enjoy.

On a whim, I picked up a single bomber of this while I was in Athens after touring the Sweetwater brewery. One of the better impulse buys I've made in recent weeks.

Appearance: Interesting, but ultimately not the beer's strongest suit. This stuff looks like really strong Lipton's tea. Even after swirling and pouring the yeasty sediment from the bottom of the bottle, the beer is translucent (but dim, due to its dark mahogany hue). A respectable three-finger head was easy to raise, even with a careful weizen pour, but it faded rather quickly into little more than a faint film. Carbonation is ample and visible. Lacing is non-existent.

Smell: I'm intrigued from the first whiff. There was I time when I'd had Celebrator and Korbinian, but never a weizenbock. During that time -- the years before I tried Aventinus and Vitus -- this is exactly what I thought weizenbock would smell like. The most prominent aroma is roasted malt, just like a dark doppelbock. Fermented wheat is also in the foreground, alongside a beautiful maple-like sweetness. A hint of that strange metallic note that is common among wheat beers is there, but it's not strong. I like what I smell here.

Taste: Follows the nose perfectly -- just as it should. To paraphrase myself, this is just what I used to think a weizenbock would taste like. Roasted malt and wheaty twang are the stars of the show, but they're carried by a molasses-like sweetness that really works well. As the beer warms, the sweetness becomes more prominent. Now that I think about it, the taste is more doppelbock than weizenbock, but that's okay with me. It's unusual among weizenbocks, especially American ones, and I like it.

Mouthfeel: A LITTLE weaker/waterier than I'd like, but still pretty full and smooth. Brisk carbonation lifts the flavors along the tongue and throat, leaving a lasting memory of fermented wheat on the taste buds. Not hard to swig heartily, which is unique among darker weizenbocks.

Drinkability: Better than you might think, at 7.80% ABV. Alcohol is not perceptible in this one, which makes it as drinkable as those excellent doppelbocks I mentioned above. Now, for my tastes, it's not as drinkable as Vitus or Aventinus, but most beers aren't. Still, this is a 22-ounce bomber, so drinking more than one on your own, in one sitting, probably isn't advisable.

Overall, I found this beer to be a refreshing change of pace from the average weizenbock -- and the vast majority of weizenbocks are indeed average. At best. Perhaps the way this bridges the gap between weizen and doppelbock has particular appeal for me...regardless, I strongly recommend this beer, if you can get your hands on it. I hope I can find some more locally!

Appearance: It's a little hazy and a nice looking brown-rubyesque color. The head is off-white in color and stands about a finger tall. It didn't stick around very long and left a very light lacing on the glass.

Smell: It's fruity and sweet smelling initially. Apple and pear are the prominent fruit aromas. It's a little grainy and earthy. Cinnamon and clove spices are readily apparent. There's a healthy amount of sweet caramel malts on the nose. It's got a nice smell, but is lacking just a tad in strength.

Taste: A combo of fruit and spice flavors appear initially. It is mostly apple, pear and grape flavors on the fruit side. Spices are cinnamon and clove. They mix well and produce a nice flavor. There's a lingering banana taste, as well. It's slightly grainy and has a nice floral aspect to it that's mostly attributable to hops. They give it a slight bitter kick toward the end. Finishes sweet.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's medium bodied and has pretty high carbonation. It's smooth, but carbonation is too high to reach a higher level. Drinkability is good, but it feels a little heavy. I'm having no trouble with the bomber, but couldn't do any more.

This is a pretty good Weizenbock. It could use a little refining. I think the fruity aspect of the beer is a little too strong and the spicy elements a little too weak. An adjustment there would be an improvement. It's still a very solid beer that's well worth checking out if you happen to run across it.

Pours an effervescent caramel with red tinges, 2 fingers of fast disappearing sand colored head, has a nice noisy head! Zero head retention & lacing

S: Bubblegum, peaches & passion fruit

T: Fruity with hints of Rome apples, peaches, apple skins, some earthy hops & rubber bands up front. I get dryness, a bit of pepperyness, faint leafy hops, some cinnamon, some cloves & more rubber bands as this warms. Finishes dry with some figs and appleskins & some booze

MF: Slick with moderate carbonation, chewyness & juicyness surfaces as this pretty warm. Kind of thin despite some alcohol presence at the end

Drinks alright, this seems a bit green for the style. If you get one age it a bit, you'll probably get a beer closer to the style. Not really getting the 7.8% ABv, I would've guessed 6.0 max. This would work as a training wheels weizenbock, not

Paid $4.99 for this 100 barrel series bomber yesterday at Lowes food. Enjoyed the last 100 series I tried so why not. Though it's not my favorite style, I really enjoyed this one. Very sweet and lingering fruits, bananas, and clove, not the best with the pasta I had to tonight, but would be a good one on a nice spring evening. Good qualities and the alcohol is not noticeable at all. Would prefer this in a 12 oz, rather than 22 oz.

A: I split this bomber with my lovely wife... Poured into two pils glasses, there is about 1" head that recedes within a minute to nothing. The beer is a clear(?) ruby red with hints of straw color.

S: Bubblegum and nothing but... maybe a hint of cherry tobacco in the background.

T: There's a lot of banana up front from the yeast profile. The malt kicks in late with slight notes of toasted nuts (almonds?)
and mild cocoa. I get an aftertaste that makes me think of sweet pipe tobacco, even though I don't smoke at all.

M: This one feels just a bit thin, which makes the carbonation a bit harsher than I'd prefer.

D: This is an interesting brew, but not something I'd reach for every day. I think I'd prefer a standard Weizen.

On tap at Vermont Tap House.
This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice looking crisp semi-transparent amber to brown color. Not much of a head and it was a bar pour, so I wasn't too worried. Barely any lace.
The aroma had a great blend of sweet banana, dark chocolate, dark chocolate, brown sugar, sweet wheat, clove, sly coriander, sweet earth, slight red delicious apple and a slight bready/yeasty tone underneath. Light bubblegum further underneath.
The flavor was moderately sweet leaning into a meshing of banana, sweet wheat, bready/yeasty character, and those chocolates. Spiciness seemingly coming from the clove and coriander. Aftertaste was a meshing of bubblegum, sweet wheat, clove, banana, dark chocolate and sweet earth.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation and ABV felt fine. Light spicy grip penetrable on my tongue. Good semi-spicy to sweet bubblegum, banana and light chocolate finish.
Overall, an extremely nice weizenbock well worthy to have again.

Pours a pretty clear amber color with a rather disappointing head. It dissipated very quickly and left nothing, nada, zilch. The smell has typical hefe characteristics though subdued. Some banana and clove. The taste is of slight banana but big bubblegum flavor. There is an obvious malt presence but it takes a backstage to the hefe yeast flavors. The malt give this brew a slight honey roasted nut flavor. The feel is light with moderate carbonation, finishes very balanced. A nice weizenbock with good flavors, the appearance is a bit disappointing but it is worth a try.

Pours a dark caramel, very little head. Smell is banana and rich malt, very nice on the nose. Taste catches the malt presence nicely..light clove/hop presence. Mout feel is a nice blend of bread like chewiness accompanied by a nicely dry finish. Smoothness is a plus in the drinkability area, considering the higher abv.

Big thanks goes out to some kind BA's who sent me some of the newest 100 barrel offerings. The gold wrapped twenty two was served cold and poured into a large pilsner glass. Consumed on 12/04/08.

The pour was decent enough, a rich caramel color with some nice clarity to it. Nice carbonation was visible throughout the session which bubbled up to a small head that graced the top for just a few seconds.

Rich malty aroma, lots of hints of sweetness lying underneath as well. Earthy with a light grain and bready profile that was very rich and full. Carried over well into the flavor which was again very nicely done here. Nice notes of caramel, earthy malts, hints of grass like hops in the finish were all but drowned out by this monster.

Overall a very solid beer here. A bit sweet and one sided with the profile but still very solid. Another good one in this lineup.

a: pours a low khaki head that recedes to a thin ring, zero retention so I've got to dock it 0.5, the beer is a clear, deep ruby-brown in color

s: fruity toffee malts upfront with notes of dark fruit cake, nice banana aroma with a touch of spicy clove, very mild ethanol, smells great imo

m: light-medium carbonation and medium body

t: rich bock malts dominate and bring fruity toffee with a touch of banana-clove in the background, various dark fruits, moderate sweetness, quite good bock flavors, a little more "weizen" would be nice but the subtlety kinda works out, nice long finish

d: very enjoyable

Pours an amber/brown color with a huge fluffy head.

Smell is primarily spicy yeastiness with some noticeable alcohol. Taste is caramel with a slight bitterness and a bit of butterscotch that makes for a nice finish.

Mouthfeel is medium with low carbonation. Drinkability is decent, but not great.

Pours a dark amber color with very little head, what there is of disappears fast, no lacing.

Smell is mostly malt with some caramel aroma, not overly powerful, some fruit presence, mainly banana.

Taste is malty with caramel up front, then an aftertaste of banana follows with some other spiciness. Not an overpowering weizenbock in the taste department, a little disappointed by this one.

appearance - Nice dark amber color with a thin head that faded out and left a little bit of lace on the glass.

smell - Malts, spices, and yeast here.

taste - Nice malt taste with spices and some hops present. Has a sweet aftertaste for a nice balance.

mouthfeel - Medium body.

drinkability - Was a nice beer to drink after a hot day near a camp fire. Would buy this one again. I love the 100 barrel series.

It pours a red copper color with a short beige head. It has an overly sweet malty aroma with hints of banana and clove from the hefewiesen yeasts that it was brewed with. It tastes just like that as well which is nice to have a beer that delivers how it smells. It tastes overwhelmingly malty with some banana and clove flavorings that add to the sweetness making it a very sweet beer. It has a great mouthfeel since it is not overly carbonated, but carbonated just right. It is smooth all the way through from the first sip to the last and it is fairly drinkable. Since it's not always offered, I figure it's worth a shot. Enjoy, it's a decent beer.

Given the quality of Harpoon's other beers, I opened this 22 oz. bomber of Weizenbock with high expectations. Todd Charbonneau, the head brewer at Harpoon's Boston facility, crafts a very drinkable beer, but not a perfect one.

My senses were aroused at the sight of a finger's worth of foam and a smooth caramel aroma. It appeared surprisingly clear for a wheat beer, chestnut in color.

The flavor was bit disappointing. Caramel and banana overpowered the other flavors I expected; I detected only a slight amount of clove, and the spice and other fruit tastes I expected were overwhelmed . Its medium body was weaker than I expected, although the finish was clean and smooth.

Overall, the beer was good, but not as malty as I expected, and with a much stronger banana presence than could have been intended.
