A clear, very dark (nearly opaque), reddish-brown Porter with moderately large, light brown head. I smell roasted coffee and dark chocolate. The taste is roasted and smokey, with a slight chocolate tone, and a burnt bitter finish. the body is moderate in my mouth (a bit thinner than expected). Overall, this Porter has a nice mix of flavors; it tingles on my tongue after drinking it. Notice the cap, it is rather "cool" looking with a drawing of the head of a Catamount (mountain cat).

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. Black label with the new Catamount look. Much cleaner, bolder.

Appearance: Dark, rich looking copper-brown. Creamy, frothy, clingy, tan head. Amazing head retention.

Smell: Very aromatic. Roasted and acidic black malt aromas meld with faint earth notes and malt sweetness.

Taste: Smooth and balanced mouthfeel from the start. Lovely malt sweetness, roasted flavours, and the slightest touch of burnt caramel & chocolate finish in the malt. Also has a nice mild fruitiness about it that segues perfectly into a delicious hop flavour; a bit of a mild hop citrus bite with floral flavours that smoothes out with the roasted character of the brew. Finishes a tad dry, but clean.

Notes: Damn, this is one hell of a tasty beer! Perfectly balanced. Without a doubt one of the best Porters that I have ever tasted.

Pretty much what it used to be, a big time session brown porter.

12oz. amber bottle.

Pours a virtually opaque dark, dark brown. Almost black. Tiny shafts of ruby-tinged light sneak through at the edges. Thick and foamy tan-colored head sits atop the beer, allowing itself to randomly stick to the glass in a patchy lattice. Aromas are wonderful. Baking chocolate, toffee, coffee, roasted nuts, dark fruit...all combine for a symphony for the nose. Flavor follows nicely in the footsteps of the aromas. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, fresh coffee, oven-roasted nuts. Finishes with a slight smoky, "citric-sour" aftertaste. Fantastic. Very, very well-balanced. Hops are there to just slightly tone down the malty sweetness. Excellent mouthfeel. Extremely drinkable. Session beer? Oh yes. Ranks so very close to EdFip from GLBC in my book.

Thanks to AKSmokedPorter for this one.

A dark pour, equal parts brown and black. Aroma was chocolate malt. Aroma as much.

Taste, more chocolate, but this was one of the first beers I could appreciate that was this heavy and hoppy. Had a remarkable snappy, dry, crisp whatever feel to it. Wasn't even into beers like this back then. The leaner body made it more accesssible, like an east coast Black Butte, but at the same time, allowed the alcohol to seep through. An interesting creation.

very nice and smooth porter. Not too roasted or bitter tasting like some other porters, this one is very well balanced.

Excellent Porter, although bordering on a stout IMHO. Poured a nice dark color, great mocha taste. A little watery for my taste, but not weak. A good session beer, the taste growing on you as you continue to drink. I hope that Harpoon makes this beer more available, it could make many a summer's day more enjoyable.

This beer pours a clear very dark (nearly opaque) red/brown color with a moderately large light brown head. The mouthfeel is moderate and a bit thin for the style. The smell is of cocoa, roasted, coffee with a slight sourness. The tase is roasted, slightly smoky, slightly chocolatey with a burnt bitterness. The is a good and warming porter that would benefit greatly from an increased mouthfeel.

Pours dark brown with a big creamy tan head that fades slowly and leaves a slight lace. Huge roasted coffe and bittersweet chocolate smells in the nose. The taste starts off with some nice creamy chocolate flavors before transitioning into a slightly bitter coffee flavor that leaves the beer with a lovely, bitter, lingering finish. Smooth and creamy, this brew is very drinkable, especially for a porter. This is one excellent porter and the style is starting to become one of my favorites. Highly recommended if you can find it.

Originally sampled on 10 March 2003. I am writing this review from my notes.
Appearance: It is black colored with a tan head.
Flavor: The taste has chocolate & roasty notes, but it is surprisingly light bodied.
Mouthfeel: It has a little bit of tingle on the tongue, but it's highly quaffable.

Dark brown hue, w/ traces of clear deep garnet when held to light. Persistant beige head slowly settles into a bumpy, tight layer. Loose lace remains. Dark caramel and chocolate malt sweetness, with hints of a sharp, metal tinged black patent bittersweetness in aroma. Earthy, woody hop nose. Subdued dark prune fruitness and diacetyl. Clean dark caramel malt sweetness upfront in flavor melds with ensuing smooth, lightly smokey darkly roasted malt. Dryish notes of unsweetened cocoa along with a mildly tart fruity twang emerge mid palate. Well attenuated, with residual sweetness well contrasted by moderate hop bitterness. Perhaps a touch thin and unremarkable in mouthfeel. Overshadowed earthy hop flavor. Finishes dry, clean w/ a hint of fruit laced residual sweetness briefly lingering. Well balanced overall, but somewhat underwhelming. The relatively light roasted character and hop bitterness lends this a brown porter like overall profile. Quaffable.

Black with ruby red highlights and a nice brown head which leaves spots of lace. Nice roasty chocolate malt aroma. Solid roasty dry flavor, bitterweet chocolate notes, and a good hop balance and finish. Medium bodied and smooth with a nice dry espresso-like finish.

I would have ranked this as a Robust Porter. Either way - delicious!

A nice dark brown porter, pours with a good head but no lace. Sweet overtones and a toasted coffee aroma & well-balanced flavor but with a slightly hoppy finish. Solid medium bodied brew that is good on a day like today - its 5 degrees out there. Worth a try.

That middle ground between black and brown, this one poured out that way. Aroma was more of a chocolate malt aspect than coffee from the malt. Roast is what I was going for.

Taste still had the chocolate malt but a hoppiness came out of it that wasn't discernable in the nose. Cascade hops? The carbonation was lively, kept the mouthfeel lighter than expected. Chewy but not heavy. Hoppy, but not overly bitter. Decent beer.

Darker brown with a tan head that faded quickly. Lots of baker's chocolate and light coffee on the nose. Plenty bitter and the finish is long. There is this sweetness that strikes you a few moments after you swallow, right on the tip of your tongue. Very drinkable as well.

The aroma is a nice balance of coffee and chocolate malt. Catamount Porter pours a deep black with a thin, tan head. The flavors of coffee, toffee and chocolate.

There is a bit too much carbonation and a "burn" on the roof of the mouth not expected out of something usually mellow like a porter. There also is a slight sourness to the finish.

Nice effort. This porter is full of traditional rich, roasty malt aroma and chocolate flavor. Very drinkable! Gotta love that.

The beer pours a rich brownish black, like old black lacquered antique furniture. Translarent, shining a deep mahogany red through light. A thin, patchy misting of head tops the liquid.
Aroma is absolutely superb. Very roasty, with a pronounced chocolate malt presence. Thick, rich bittersweet baker's chocolate, with an estery dark fruit aroma. Hints of cherry, raspberry, coffee, and a bit of a sherry quality to it. A light hopping permeates through the malts.
Flavor is rich and roasty. Very robust, with a solid roasted and chocolate malting. Roasted malt comes in first, with a strong bittersweet dark chocolate flavor. A sweet fruitiness follows, with hints of black cherry, raspberry, peach, plum, and a touch of red grape. A bit of toffee and hazelnut. Hops come in late, providing a very clean dry finish, with little bitterness. A bit of black coffee aftertaste. A robust medium body, with moderate carbonation.
I'm definitely disappointed that I waited this long to try this beer. It's a fantastic porter, with a lot of complexity and wonderful character.

While I was drinking this all I could think of is green bananas covered with chocolate, because this is what this beer tasted like to me. Banana flavored chocolate malt taste with way too many grassy tasting finishing hops for a porter. It was almost undrinkable.
