UFO PumpkinUFO Pumpkin

Brewed by:
Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall
Massachusetts, United States

Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.90%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Imagine a pumpkin vine wound its way in a field of barley, and a brewer harvested it all to make a beer. Add Northwestern hops and a blend of spices, and you've got UFO Pumpkin. The malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin. And like all of our UFO beers, UFO Pumpkin is unfiltered so all the wonderful flavors are right there in your glass. Cheers!

12oz brown bottle with a best before date on the neck.

LOOK: Hazed orange amber, great head retention.

SMELL: Spice, cookie dough, faint pumpkin meat, canned pumpkin pie.

TASTE: Very smooth, crisp, moderate body, toasted grain, even spice, pumpkin meat, yeast, more spice, semi-dry.

I think Harpoon made the right choice on putting a pumpkin offering in their UFO lineup, it just makes sense. A bit more flavor left from it being unfiltered make for a very well rounded brew. Too many times I have run into ultra filtered pumpkin beers that taste like soda ... not here. Worth a go.

Harpoon UFO Pumpkin
12 oz bottle

Surprisingly good. For the most part Harpoon has left me "so-so" but this pumpkin beer is excellent.

Its cloudy orange beneath a short white head that drops but holds a solid surface covering (thin, but complete). It also offers fairly good lacing with splashes and streaks like fake halloween cobwebs (y'now, in the spirit of things).

The aroma is all about pumpkin spice - heavy on All-spice. Fruity. Apple pie? Some ginger. Slightly different than usual. Nutmeg... Over-spiced? It's loaded, yet it doesn't overwhelm.

The flavor follows the aroma. It's heavily spiced but somehow not overbearing. Perhaps because the bitterness is restrained, perhaps because the way that they've spiced it hasn't left it with any harsh notes. Malt comes through but is basically a base for the spice. Definitely a "pumpkin spice" beer.

In the mouth it's smooth with a medium body and a moderate carbonation.

Overall it's a pretty nice "pumpkin spice" beer. I'd imagine that you could drink a few of these despite its inherent character. Well done.

UFO Pumpkin brewed by Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall, with an ABV of 5.9% This brew pours out a nice cloudy amber , also orange color. Pumpkin UFO also has a nice white head on top. I really like the color of this brew. The smell of pumpkin UFO is spices , pumpkin, grains, malts, and a hit of hops. Now for the taste, it is just like pumpkin pie. Not saying that is a bad thing. This brew you really pick up on the pumpkin and the spice. There is a lot going on in this brew, it has a nice balance to it. There is nothing overpowering about pumpkin UFO. You really can't pick up on the 5.9% ABV in this brew. Pumpkin UFO is a real smooth drinking brew. The mouth feel of Pumpkin UFO is rich, bold , and refreshing. Overall I'm giving Pumpkin UFO a 4.5 out of 5. Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall, did a nice job with this brew. I would buy this brew again.

Pours a decent fluffy almost 2 finger head that fades semi quickly at first the slower, no real lacing, over hazy golden amber orange colored beer.

Nose has pumpkin and spices, light pumpkin filling, light toasted malt, some pumpkin and holiday like spices that aren't too heavy but there.

Taste brings light tart almost sour pumpkin, pumpkin filling from a can, light bready malts giving just a hint of pumpkin pie, then some light spices typical pumpkin or holiday spices and light wit like spices, very light syrupy malts, a light bitterness comes through with some light spicy hops. Finishes a bit more bitter with spicy hops, some lingering pumpkin and spices, and hints of malts, slightly dry with some light sticky feel.

Mouth is med to lighter bodied, good carbonation.

Overall not bad, I was expecting worse but the malts weren't bad, light hops are nice, the pumpkin or spices weren't overpowering but let you know it was there.

Served in a Walter Payton shaker pint glass.

I remember one of my first craft beers was a UFO Hefeweizen...I guess it was part nostalgia, part ticking impulse that made me pull the trigger on this one. It pours a lightly hazy amber-straw topped by a half-finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises mild pumpkin pie, complete with crust, along with some bland wheat-like notes in the background. For once, it's unnecessary to list off the constituent spices and whatnot, 'cause here they just blend together too nicely, smelling almost too much like actual pumpkin pie for their own good. If only it were more powerful, this would smell amazing. The taste, though, makes me wish the exact opposite: The pie is still there, I suppose, but everything has gone rancid, putrefied. It's an all-out blitz on my tongue, finishing with a long-malingering sting of straight clove and black pepper. Imagine just chewing on those two spices in their raw forms. Yeah. This was awful, to say the least. Not only does it hurt as I drink it, but more pain follows while I'm trying to wrap my head around the maw that opened up between my perception of the smell and the taste. Damn. The body is a light medium, with a moderate carbonation and a lightly watery, lightly grainy feel. Overall, this has got to be one of the worst pumpkin beers I have ever had. It's still got a couple months on its 12/13/12 best-by date, but it seems like it's already starting to decay in the bottle. Shit, at this point I'd rather gnaw on a human bone dusted with cinnamon than take another sip o' this monstrosity.

12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a darkish golden-amber body, fairly clouded, and with a small, white he--oh, it's gone already.

Smell: Pumpkin-scented nose with the spices coming through, notably the cinnamon ahead of the basic, bready German base malts.

Taste: Lightly sugary, bready Malts, scantly toasted. Cinnamon, nutmeg, but also something with a warm accent to it akin to clove or possibly ginger. Light bitterness aided by the spice and carbonation. Spicy, solidly carbonated finish with the spiciness lingering out into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: For me, nothing says mid-August in the sweltering heat of Georgia like an Autumntime pumpkin beer??

After trying two or three different pumpkin beers (Sam Adams Harvest and Two Roads Roadsmarys Baby among them) I settled on this as my favorite. Mainly because I'm not big on having a huge clove, nutmeg, allspice, nose & taste.

I feel the aforementioned spices go a very long way with a very meger amount. I often feel like I'm drinking allspice with ale, with no trace of pumpkin, well, the UFO strikes a nice balance in my opinion of having the same spices, but it is much more subtle, also the the taste is very 'pumpkiny'.

The mouthfeel is creamy, pumpkin pie. I'm surprised the reviews saying no pumpkin taste, I disagree, and also now wonder if the UFO can, is somehow that much better than the bottle.

I'm generally not a big fan of pumpkin beers, but this one was pretty good.

In a mug, the beer was an amber color with a medium-sized white head that dissipated quickly.

Pumpkin pie aroma. Nutmeg.

Pumpkin pie taste. Nutmeg. A bit of caramel malt

Medium-bodied, a little on the spicy side.

I would drink this one again.

12 ounce bottle, w/o freshness/bottling indication provided.

Pours lightly hazed light brown amber. Minor off white head, quickly departs. Leaves a delicate film, collar and just minor spots of lacing.

Sweet malt nose with some mild cinnamon and typical fall spicing.

On the lighter and thinner side of the pumpkin beer spectrum. Subtle spicing and more sweet malts. Ehhhh, middle of the road at best
