Brewed by:
Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall
Massachusetts, United States

Style: Herbed / Spiced Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Harpoon 100 Barrel Series Ginger Wheat Ale is an ode to brewer Scott Shirley’s favorite spice, ginger. The earthy, warming flavor of this golden-hued ale is derived from fresh ginger. Honey from a local New Hampshire farm yields a slight sweetness to balance the ginger spiciness. A hint of lemon adds acidity and rounds out the ginger flavor. Cheers!

Had on draft at Harpoon brewery in 4-oz glass

A: little carb.; good, healthy head
S: very gingery, almost nothing but ginger
T: very, very gingery; nice balance of malte and hops; floral; great way to do a wheat beer

Ideal to have if the words "wheat" and "ginger" grab ya.

A- Very clear, golden with tinge of red. Passing white head with no notable lacing.

S- Very strong ginger scent, with light malt note in background. A bit minerally with warmth.

T- Ginger bite, followed by light malt flavor that persists, ginger returns with presence in aftertaste.

M- Medium body, certainly heavy for a wheat. Smooth with some of the ginger bit in feel. Carbonation evident.

O- Like many in the series, good but not great. Rather a nice change of pace, but more depth of flavor would be appreciated.

A: The beer is relatively clear golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a small head covering the surface and lots of lacy rings of bubbles running down the sides of the glass.
S: There are moderate to strong aromas of fresh ginger in the smell—it’s almost like using chopsticks to hold up gari (pickled ginger) to your nose.
T: Like the smell, flavors of ginger dominate the overall taste, which also has hints of honey and wheat. There is a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I really enjoyed the smell and taste of this beer because the addition of ginger makes an ordinary wheat beer quite enjoyable, refreshing and inspiring. I would be tempted to pair this with a dish of sushi and wasabi because the taste of ginger reminds me of what you would expect as an accompaniment to eating sushi or sashimi.

22 oz. bottle, with best by date of 09/15/2012 printed on the side of the bottle, barely readable after all this time in the cooler. My local beer store still had a few of these left, so I figured it was time to check it out.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours a light bright golden orange colored body with some bubbles and some fine sediment floating around. Two and a half fingers of white / off-white bubbly head. Looks like a nice IPA, and definitely doesn't look at all like a year past it's prime.

S - Smell conjures some grains, wheat, light ginger spice, honey, lots of herbal spice rack notes like oregano and thyme. Tart lemon. A hint of soapiness. Doesn't smell like a beer past it's prime, either.

T - Taste follows the nose, only better and more intense in a lot of ways. Tart, citric lemon, spicy ginger, bitter hops, bready malt, graininess & some sweet corn. This doesn't taste like a beer nearly a year past it's enjoy by date, either.

M - Feel is crisp, brisk, sticky, & fruity. A hint of the spicy ginger lingering onto the palate.

Overall, this is some smooth, clean, light, and easy drinking at 7.00% abv. And this beer has held up exceptionally well, considering I am the first person to review it in nearly a year. I just might have to go back and get more of this. Looking forward to more of these 100 Barrel Series beers by Harpoon, since they've been turning out nicely.

Mmmmm, ginger...I love ginger in beer! 22 oz bomber pours a clear gold color with a fluffy cap of off-white head. Decent retention and lacing.

Nose is full of ginger thankfully and there is some lemon peel and a what is that...hops perhaps? Smells good, and fresh.

Taste...not so much. The hops and ginger clash and not sure what the lemon juice is supposed to accomplish. Instead of fresh ginger, perhaps candied ginger should have been used. It seems to give a much softer, sweeter perception of ginger. This is sharp and bitter with no flow to it. Wow, this is the worst ginger beer I have ever had. Finishing this bomber is becoming debatable, I tried some cheese and crackers and it still tastes horrible.

On-tap 6/5/2012 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a short dense white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, lime, light caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of lime and spices. Then some breadiness of wheat and a thin malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it’s a decent beer to drink for a while if you’re looking for a wheat beer with a slightly different flavor to it.

A-pours a orange/golden color that is hazy with a white head
S-malt, ginger
T-Pretty heavy ginger flavor, subtle bitterness, and decent malt background. Even though the ginger is pretty heavy, it's not off puting and is pretty well balanced
M-light-medium bodied
O-not a bad beer. I would have it again on occasion. Worth trying

a: burnt orange amber color with one finger off white head that doesn't stick around too long

s: aroma of ginger bread and spice, malt sweetness, reminds me somewhat of a pumpkin ale

t: ginger up front with a biscuity finish and a bitter aftertaste, not much else going on

m: light mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. refreshing.

o: I wish they played up the ginger a bit more but it's decent as a wheat beer

Good starting head, although it quickly becomes a rather large-bubbled remnant, leaving some chunky, but spotty lace. The liquid is golden and quite clear.

Woah, lots of ginger here--smells like a ginger ale (which it is, but I meant the soda type). The ginger completely overwhelms any other possible aromas.

Good ginger, but not nearly as dominant as the smell. Not very wheaty. Relatively smooth body and carbonation. Pale malt start, ginger swallow and aftertaste. One dimensional, but easy to drink.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass, not sure of the bottled date. This pours a golden color with a short lived laceless off white head. The smell is of ginger and wheat, seems good enough. The feel is medium to thinner. The taste is okay, a little disappointing considering how much I love ginger. First its got a little weird bitterness, not a good hop one, a little wheat and some ginger, not quite the ginger flavorbomb I was hoping for.
