Sometimes I forget about the massive variation in scale that exists within the craft beer world. Hanging around People's and Sun King and making frequent stops at Three Floyds and Millstream give me a certain idea of how big a brewery is supposed to be. Then I stumble across a place like this, located in a literal shipyard with a fleet of trucks waiting in front of a factory facade, and I remember just how much work and development goes into making a nationally recognized brand.

Years ago, when I first getting into good beer, Harpoon was the shit. It's one of those forgotten breweries, like Great Lakes and Victory, that used to be stylistic standard-bearers but have since gotten replaced several times over by the proliferation of local breweries. Go to a store now in any place that's not fucking horrible and 75% of the domestic craft selection will be from in-state. It makes sense; there's just that many breweries now. But they're all super expensive and most aren't that great. Once, not that long along, places like Harpoon helped build up the craft scene, and they did by widely distributed well-brewed, medium priced beer. They didn't have time to become EXTREME, because they were too busy being competent.

So here's the big, long, narrow, big, woody, tracklighted, big college bar brewery establishment thing that sits in the middle of an impressive brewing and shipping campus. The beers are Harpoon, which you've had. The service is friendly and the establishment is well worth touring.

Here is a way to experience the brewery while enjoying the many, many different brews, including some pilot beers that are not available outside of the brewery. The only food comes in the form of pretzels with a multitude of dipping sauces.

The beers are expensive, but there's a decent variety.

One of my all-time favorite places in Boston. Great place to spend an afternoon and try some great brews. The Beer Hall and X-Nights are awesome additions. Sometimes there's a line, but worth the wait.

Went here for a bachelor party last summer. I'm a Midwesterner so I had a blast in Boston and really enjoyed Harpoon. Granted I was a bit inebriated, I thought it was a positive experience. Solid selection, good vibes. Harpoon was a good time.

While the idea of a large "German style" beer hall is great, a room with nothing more than a dozen super long wooden tables does not make for an exciting vibe in Boston. They couldn't be closer to the harbor but cannot exploit it due to bad land parceling. There is a serious *lack of music* of music of interest. This place is screaming for live music!! Add a Resident DJ and corner some flat screens with Closed Captioning and you're in the game. The beer selection is very good - average is over a dozen varieties - even if you don't like the typical Harpoon hop signature. Service has ranged from very good to poor. Also (as any Bar Rescue disaster will teach you) the Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall NEEDS FOOD. Pretzels only good so far.

Beer hall with all Harpoon's beers on tap. You can also get a pretzel if you're hungry. $5 Tour is worth the money, includes beer and some education. Facility includes long bar with some seating and many long wooden tables. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. All Harpoon staples on tap and may one-off's available. There's also a gift shop for your Harpoon branded need. Beer is good, pretzels are good, what's else is there to want?

I knew Harpoon was a classic Boston brewery and a must-stop but I had no idea there would be over 20 beers (including a cask) available to try and that there was not a bad or even very mediocre beer in the bunch. The low-rated UFO series was killer (fruit beers especially), the cask IPA was excellent, traditional styles were solid if not great (including a great sticke alt), and there were a few strong/imperial ales and stouts that were downright amazing.

Pretzels with sauces made a nice booze-soaker and for the most part the staff was very helpful and welcoming. If you're in Boston check out the Harpoon taproom.

This is a very nice, "old world" style beer hall with ample communal tables and a huge bar. On several visits I have found the selection covers many of the typical Harpoon shelf beers, but also an ample number of specialty brews. The pretzels are fresh and hot, the dipping sauces are a great accompaniment and vary. Huge room, active vibe, yet a relaxed feel. The brewery tour is very good and there are some interesting tie ins with local history. No food beyond the pretzels due to agreements with local eateries, but a great spot to have a snack and a good brew or two before heading out to dinner.
