Sometimes I forget about the massive variation in scale that exists within the craft beer world. Hanging around People's and Sun King and making frequent stops at Three Floyds and Millstream give me a certain idea of how big a brewery is supposed to be. Then I stumble across a place like this, located in a literal shipyard with a fleet of trucks waiting in front of a factory facade, and I remember just how much work and development goes into making a nationally recognized brand.

Years ago, when I first getting into good beer, Harpoon was the shit. It's one of those forgotten breweries, like Great Lakes and Victory, that used to be stylistic standard-bearers but have since gotten replaced several times over by the proliferation of local breweries. Go to a store now in any place that's not fucking horrible and 75% of the domestic craft selection will be from in-state. It makes sense; there's just that many breweries now. But they're all super expensive and most aren't that great. Once, not that long along, places like Harpoon helped build up the craft scene, and they did by widely distributed well-brewed, medium priced beer. They didn't have time to become EXTREME, because they were too busy being competent.

So here's the big, long, narrow, big, woody, tracklighted, big college bar brewery establishment thing that sits in the middle of an impressive brewing and shipping campus. The beers are Harpoon, which you've had. The service is friendly and the establishment is well worth touring.

Huge open second floor taproom to the right of the entrance with expansive racetrack bar and plenty of picnic table seating. Small merchandise sales area to the left. About 20 well assorted beers on tap. Quick and courteous service. We were there Friday at happy hour and the place was packed and lively.

Ehhh...What can you say it's an average brewery with some decent brews, nothing special. If you go to any of the brewfests or large outdoor events make sure you step back in line for the bathrooms as soon as you get a beer, they only have about a dozen portos for hundreds of people and the line can be up to 20 minutes.

Huge crowded beer hall vibe with long community table. Spotty service when it is crowded but some cool beers on you can't get normally in bottles. Worth a stop in.

Love the vibe of this place. Great beer hall with amazing pretzels. Also, a well done beer tour.

Parking is a problem, loud, full, tough to get seats, or servers attenton. Never-the-less worth the visit. Good selection of brews, a fun boisterous Oktoberfest - like venue. & the pretzels are fantastic!

Several people told me that Harpoon was the best brewery to visit in Boston. I have to admit that after my experience I am quite underwhelmed. First off the beer...it wasn't very good save the Hoppy Adventure which was a fairly good copy of a NE IPA. The rest of their beers that I tried tended to have course carbonation and seemed like craft beer that you might find 15 years ago.

The second issue that I had during my visit is that they seem to value the ease for their employees over the desire of the customer. While I sat at the bar most of people coming up to the bar were asking if they can create their own sampler flight. No, we only do three preset flights was the response. I understand that it is tough doing custom flights during a jammed weekend night but really, no choice at all, ever? It doesn't seem very customer friendly or flexible.

This place would work for larger gatherings where beer quality/choice weren't as important though.

I was really surprised during my visit. Nice selection of beers on tap that aren't available in stores and the beer is definitely "fresher". (You can really taste it.) The pretzels are a great snack to munch and dip on. Service, IMO, was about what it should be from any establishment of this type. Got to talk beer with my server which is always a good thing. Will be coming back for sure.

Good vibe on the Saturday night I went. Big bar. Good views of Boston through the large glass windows and also views of inside the actual brewery on the other side. Small gift shop and place to purchase beers to take home. Down side was no TV's anywhere, so had to watch the NCAA Tournament on my phone.

Here is a way to experience the brewery while enjoying the many, many different brews, including some pilot beers that are not available outside of the brewery. The only food comes in the form of pretzels with a multitude of dipping sauces.

The vibe comes in the form of tourists and Millennials. Always busy on the weekends. There's a long bar and many long, sharable picnic tables. Very convivial.

The beers are expensive, but there's a wonderful variety.

One of my all-time favorite places in Boston. Great place to spend an afternoon and try some great brews. The Beer Hall and X-Nights are awesome additions. Sometimes there's a line, but worth the wait.

Had been to Boston many times and never stopped to check out Harpoon before. The place is pretty nice. Big taproom and gift shop. The service was friendly and the selection is pretty solid too.

Went here for a bachelor party last summer. I'm a Midwesterner so I had a blast in Boston and really enjoyed Harpoon. Granted I was a bit inebriated, I thought it was a positive experience. Solid selection, good vibes. Harpoon was a good time.

While the idea of a large "German style" beer hall is great, a room with nothing more than a dozen super long wooden tables does not make for an exciting vibe in Boston. They couldn't be closer to the harbor but cannot exploit it due to bad land parceling. There is a serious *lack of music* of music of interest. This place is screaming for live music!! Add a Resident DJ and corner some flat screens with Closed Captioning and you're in the game. The beer selection is very good - average is over a dozen varieties - even if you don't like the typical Harpoon hop signature. Service has ranged from very good to poor. Also (as any Bar Rescue disaster will teach you) the Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall NEEDS FOOD. Pretzels only good so far.
