This tasted funny and I'm not sure why. Don't think it was past date, but I got a much stronger metallic taste than what you would expect from a canned beer. Flavor was just off, kind of tangy but not really hoppy like a black lager tends to be. I'm hoping this wasn't how the beer normally tastes, but if it is, it was probably my least favorite offering from Wynkoop.

Black beer, appropriate schwarz appearance, viscosity more cola than stout like. Beige head. Aroma was hoppy, roasted like a porter. Not skunky lager.

Taste was a highly carbonated, lively black ipa-ish kinda beer, hop bitterness is up there, but its got more going for it than just that. Tiny sweet malt. Its good, nothing special.

12oz can. Poured out an opaque, black color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled of chocolate, light coffee notes and toffee. Sweet chocolate and some bitter coffee bite.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #81 (Oct 2013):

Wynkoop’s take on the German Schwarzbier style. While it’s certainly good and highly drinkable, and offers can fans a dark beer option, it lacks some of the depth, complex malt characters and clean finish found in authentic examples.

STYLE: Schwarzbier
ABV: 5.1%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Near black, opaque, brown edges, beige lacing

SMELL: Bread crusts, chocolate, spent coffee grounds

TASTE: Very creamy, light chocolate, bready, roasty, mild acidity, faint smoke, flash of sweetness, dark grapes, blood, coin; dry, bready finish
