This one arrived at the table in a Libbey pint sans head, but with a light tan ring of lace around the top of the glass -- good retention in that respect as it was rather sticky. Orange-amber in color (copper-like) and fairly clear, but there's some chill haze.

Nose is fruity but otherwise rather neutral and malt-focused. There's something here, a specific fruit note that I can't quite put my finger on. Light citrus notes here but they don't seem to emanate from the hops. There's also some yeast in the nose, along with a lighter medicinal note -- not an "off" note per se.

Soft biscuit-y malt note from the outset, paired with a lighter, almost citric hop bite, semi-sweet. Mild lingering bitterness throughout provides a good counterpoint to the semi-sweet, fruity malt character. The fruit notes here are a little more indistinct, but I can get strawberry and honeydew melon, and also very light notes of caramel and toffee. Alcohol is slightly more pronounced, both in the aromatic portion and across the palate, than in a typical 4~5.5% Altbier. Likewise, body is medium-full and definitely strikes me as fuller than that a standard Alt, but only by half.

Overall it's a nice beer, eminently drinkable, and just a bit "off" for the standard style. A sipper at 8.5%, and dangerously-drinkable one at that (as it didn't strike me as being that big as I was drinking the other day, nor did I discern the level of alcohol upon its first release a year or so back for which I cannot find my notes).

"Uber Alt" is a weighty rendition which brings to mind others (Doppel Sticke, New Glarus Alt...) which are a tough act to follow, but here, the whole is better than the sum of its parts. Worth a try, and is probably worth picking up bottles to lay-down for a spell. Pairs very well with lighter entrees.

A: Hazy orange brown, no head, but typical of this bar. Looks like the head would be white.

S: A mild yeasty malt with no hops.

T: Again yeasty, but in a bready malty sort of way. There's an almost Belgian funk taste to it. There's a nice cinnamon-caramel taste as well.

M: A little flat but smooth and alright, just needs a touch of carbonation.

D: A little funky.

pours a dark caramel, almost umber hue, hazy and glowing with hanging particulate. a dense one-finger head quickly fades but leaves nice wispy lacing.

subdued but clean aroma of caramel, biscuits, bread, and rye crackers. some apple fruitiness with hints of blackberry and honey.

taste is deliciously rich malt with honey, maple syrup, and fruit sweetness. bready, biscuits, and a touch of hops mixed with a bit of apple and black currant.

mouth is great. full, rich, smooth. sweet and full without being slick or hot. a slightly dry finish works perfectly with the ample but smooth and fine carbonation.

all in all, one of the more impressive alts I've had in a long while. smooth, solid flavors, clean. all in all, this one hits on all cylinders. not one I'd want a ton of, but as a single, it's exceptional.

Picked this up in Madison, WI on a recent trip to the Great Lakes area.

Pours a brilliantly clear amber with lighter orange highlights around the liquid's edge. Foam stand, initially 2-3 fingers tall, receded down to a rocky half-finger thichkness while tracing an attractive pattern on the glass.

Rich, malty aromas nod their way with caramel, and sweet toasty bread. Plum and grape-like fruitiness reminiscent of munich malts. Presence of alcohol is noted.

Malty-sweet with a strong caramel and toasted bread quality. Bitterness is moderate to moderately high. The medium, dry finish leaves the malt character on the palette.

Medium-light bodied, moderately carbonated. Smooth.

Overall this is a richly malty, well-balanced brew. I'd like to see more noble hop presence but age could be a factor as this beer was purchased 3 months ago (and lacks freshness dating).

Reddish brown in color, with a finer of white head that dissipated, this is a pretty beer.

Smells of sugar and cola. Tastes like caramel and sugar, with a bit of that cold taste at the end. Moderate carbonation and a clean finish.

Not legendary, but I would have this anytime it's offered.

Hit you in the face nutty, toasty, fruity aroma. Dark amber color, a bit hazy. Tall off-white head with large bubbles, dropping slowly leaving bubbly lacing. Mild & malty taste, initially a sharp taste, followed by a somewhat bitter middle and finish. A complexity of different flavors ... nutty, fruity, perhaps a bit of caramel. Overall, very flavorful, very nice.
