Open Bottle - Tinley Park, IL

Matame Ahorita looks good if a little surprising. It's fizzy and yellow, not gold. The first pour has 100% clarity to the extent that every bubble can be seen rushing to the surface. The foam, though fizzy off the bat and two fingers in height, settles to a thick crown with some silkiness. That silkiness clings to the glass and will have to be scraped free by the looks of it. Very good.

This beer can be smelled from a couple feet away. It's very floral from start to finish, vibrant and fresh. Rosehip is natural, never impending on perfume, and runs throughout. Bold yuzu tartness plays a big role with its unique citrus character while coriander brings about a more earthy, herbal citric quality. A mustiness embraces the whole and brings about that Jolly Pumpkin house character along with a sturdy wheat twang. Appetizing.

The floral quality combines flawlessly with all the citric notes mentioned above. Rosehips get it moving but are quickly met with vibrant, tart yuzu. Lime here, lemon there. The more herbal citric quality of the coriander adds depth and levels out the brightness. The wheat has a strong presence with its musty graininess and twang. This stuff manages to unfold with each drink. I like that.

The mouthfeel is spot on. It's light on it's feet with an active, appropriate carbonation. There's an herbal linger underneath a soft citric tartness that seems to flash over every surface. Some of the salt can be noticed on the lips. It's tangy and quenching. Drinkability is off the charts.

Matame Ahorita is another fun, interesting, delicious collaboration between two fun, interesting, good brewers. It's fresh and bright with familiar flavors well layered. A very well executed beer.

Pours straw color. Foamy, medium, white head that lasts shortly.

Smells citrus, malt, yeast funk and light tart.

Tastes yeast funk, citrus peel, grapefruit and touch of wine. Followed by light oak and herbal finish is dry with a yeast linger. Medium body and fizzy medium carbonation.

Bottle dated 6/7/2017:
This beer was pouring a lovely straw color, clarity rising as the beer went in and the thick forming head rose with it. Had to pause the bottle at half a glass due to the head, and without fully tipping it up, poured a second glass. That second glass had many flakes of white flowing with the current. A top up of the first glass gave it a few flakes as well. With a quarter bottle still left, it looks like there's going to be a snow globe ruining what might have been close to a 5 on looks. Nice head, clarity around the extra globules, and lacing bring it to its rating above 3.

Nose is wonderfully funky from arms length. Power increases as I pull the glass to my nose, of course. Outside of the brett funk and grass/hay main components, there is a nice little citrus undercurrent - lemon and lime zest, sweet orange or maybe even kumquat. A deeper whiff brings a little cheesy funk along as well.

A lighter feeling beer with decent but not distracting carbonation. Opening note is crackery malt with a little hit of citrus (more the orange). Then the brett comes on, but the lemony note (maybe it's the yuzu) rushes in and then rushes out almost as quickly. The brett plays the tortoise and lingers into the later taste. The citrus tart bite shows up again after a nap, and fades again, this time losing out to a lightly herbal hop bitterness.

The tartness was lighter initially, but came on a little stronger as it warmed. The complexity of the beer also increased with warmth. When I got the last of the bottle in the glass, the musty funk regained some strength in the beer. I sort of liked the cleaner version of the beer better - it seemed to have a little more complexity. Nitpicking a tad - but I wonder what any more age would do to this.

Pours a crystal clear light-straw color (almost like a pilsner) with an inch of frothy, sudsy foam. Invigorating aroma consists of lychee, lemongrass, clove, melon, yeast, and perhaps some coriander.

The taste features grassy hops and a present barnyard character that immediately evokes a saison. Mild, crackery malt is barely there amidst the other flavors. Lemongrass and an aspirin-like bitterness meld with a very delicate sourness. Warming precipitates grape must and a white wine character. Light body and vigorous carbonation make for a super-crisp, dry mouthfeel.

This is certainly a unique, mild sour, ideally suited for a hot summer day.

I picked up a bottle of Jolly Pumpkin and Anchorage's Matame Ahorita for $13.49 at The Lager Mill. It's been a while since I've had a Gose from JP and I'm interested to see what them and anchorage have come up with, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 750 ml bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks good, it's got that typical well down artwork from JP and I think it's eye catching. It poured a cloudy golden orange color that takes on more of a bright golden color when held to the light and it has two fingers worth of fluffy and chunky white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and it left some rings of patchy lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with that signature funky JP yeast being the first to show up and it imparts some funky barnyard and horse blanket aroma that go into a nice citrus aroma with citrus juice, lemon, light grapefruit and citrus rind aromas that go right into the spices which impart a mixed spice aroma with no single spice sticking out the most and it goes into a little more funkiness. Towards the end there's a medium sour aroma.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with those citrus flavors seeming to be first to show up this time and they impart all the same aspects that they did in the aroma with a little more lemon and a little less grapefruit aspects this time and it goes right into the funky yeast which is a little lighter than it was in the aroma, but not by much. Up next comes a little bit of a malty flavor with some pale malts, grainy malts and a little bit of sweet malts which go into the spices which impart the same mixed spice aspect that that they did in the aroma. On the finish there's a lower amount of medium sourness with a citrus, slightly funky and slightly spiced aftertaste. This is a very nice tasting beer, the sourness level is right where i want it and the flavors work well together.

M- Fairly smooth, not too moth puckering, a little crisp, dry on the finish, medium bodied with a higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a very nice beer and I thought it was a good gose, it may not be as sour as most,, but I thought it was at just the right amount of sourness and all the flavors and aromas worked well together. This beer has nice drinkability, I could drink a couple glasses, especially when it's warm out and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of JP and Gose's. What I like the most about this beer is the balance, no aspect ever got to be too overpowering. What I like the least about this beer is the nothing, there's isn't anything that I really disliked about this beer. I would buy this beer again, especially in the summertime. All in all I was happy with this beer and I was a little impressed with just how well balanced it is. It's not a favorite JP beer, but it's one of the better ones I've had lately and it's a good example of the style. Great job guys, this is one tasty and funky take on a Gose, I like it, keep it up.
