Mildly tart. Very dry and funky. Hint of fruit and spices. Flat carbonation.

Perhaps well done. But what is it ?
Question first. This is not like any Biere d'Garde that I've had. Seemingly most of BA's top reviewers just blow through this mistake categorization and say what they think needs to be said. And that is OK. I suppose that is our job. But this is an American Wild. Biere d' Garde's are designed for food. Otono dominates and does not allow food to do its thing.

That said, I should confess I like most biere d'gardes and rarely like American wilds. So my natural instinct is to have trouble with Otono. And not unsurprisingly, I do. This may be a good ale to those that like sours and wilds, but it is not a good beer to complement food. Otono Looks decent, but Smells too vinegary, Tastes too sour and Feels like it wants to fight with my dinner. There are reasons to like the artisanal qualities of Jolly Pumpkin, but you gotta like sour and wild... and I don't.

Pours the color of autumn, a rich orange brown. Head is off-white and it does leave some scattered lacing behind. Some chill haze but the light really shines through, at least on the initial pour. The end of the bottle brings the yeast and looks like unfiltered apple cider (great stuff if you can find it).
Smell is nicely funky with some malt and oak and maybe some hazelnuts(?) and spice.
Taste is similar, funk forward with lighter notes of malt, oak and spice. Balance is good.
Body is light, effervescence is fairly pronounced. Finish is cleaner than expected. All told, a damned fine beer.
