Notes / Commercial Description:
Sour, barrel-aged version of the beer by the same name. Brewed in collaboration with Maui brewing.

Yes, Michigan and Hawaii are connected. It should be obvious to you now, as you hold this beer, and read this label. John and I designed this beer with two noble fruits from two noble states, Michigan & Hawaii. Cherries and liliko’i. Starting to see the connection? I feel it. So does John. 4391 miles may separate our breweries, but no our thirst for the exquisite. Hipa! -Ron

Working with Ron is something I’ve always want to do since I had my first Jolly Pumpkin beer. Years later, it’s a reality. Being involved on this project was an honor and a privilege. Mahalo to my MBC crew and to you, fans of craft beer! -John

Amber hued and somewhat cloudy in complexion. There's a tiny wisp of brown around two thirds of the rim and about the size of a dime on top. I smell tart tart cherries, tart Brettanomyces, and citrus fruit. The taste is packed with tart cherries leading the way along with plenty of bitter Brettanomyces and just a hint of citrus in the back of the palate. The mouth is very dry, crisp, and carbonated.

A: Lots of tart cherries, followed by passion fruit, light malt presence with a faint funk and moderate sourness.

A: Deep amber color, hazy, with a thin off-white head that adequate retention before forming a film across the glass.

T: Cherry flavor, followed by passion fruit, caramelized malt sweetness, followed by a light funk and barrel character with a moderately sour finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and moderately light acidity.

O: Tasty; the super cherries and passion fruit provides a great aroma and flavor with plenty of barrel character.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/21/2016. Pours slightly hazy light reddish orange/amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart cherry, passion fruit, mango, strawberry, melon, pear, lemon, green apple, grapefruit, red grape, oak, pepper, hay, straw, and grass; with light leathery funk, red wine vinegar, wheat, bread, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, fruit juice, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart cherry, passion fruit, mango, strawberry, melon, pear, lemon, green apple, grapefruit, red grape, oak, pepper, hay, straw, and grass; with light leathery funk, red wine vinegar, wheat, bread, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and yeast/tannic oak spiciness; with lingering notes of tart cherry, passion fruit, mango, strawberry, melon, pear, lemon, green apple, grapefruit, red grape, oak, pepper, hay, straw, grass, light leather/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, fruit juice, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance. Slightly puckering, but never astringent on tartness. Light-moderate dryness from tart/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp/acidic/tannic, and lightly grainy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an awesome fruited wild ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, fruit juice, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the modest acidity/tannins. A really enjoyable offering.

December 16th, 2013 - Jolly Pumpkin and Maui Brewing must have put in some serious air miles to get this done, but the product is a fine sassy potion, cramming essence of cranberry into every milliliter. Enjoyed at home, I popped the top to find the cranberry scent quickly unfurling itself like a genie, colonizing the room and settling in for the whole bottle's drinking time. It's a sour scent with tons of raspberry and cherry, with a tang (distinct from the sour) but it is largely defined by its own acerbic quality. The taste leads with more of the tang, behind which a collection of fruit flavors gather - pomegranate, cranberry and tangerine. It's not too sweet, instead stuffed with cranberries. That bitter-acidic sweetness doesn't last long either, blooming then quickly wilting, leaving the beer demanding another sip. It's not too bright, just acidic, with each intake screwing up the face and lips a bit. But in a good way. A human way.
