people really seem to be digging this beer this year, and saranac certainly seems to be pushing it, with twelves, sixes and a mixed pack appearance, they appear to have found one they like, kind of their answer to sams winter lager i guess, but i really didnt care for this all that much. to me, its generic, overly malty, and never crisp enough in the finish. that said though, it is a little something different, with a rich but dry malt base, copper and caramel in color, and with fine carbonation. it just doesnt seem to develop like a lager should, and frankly isnt anything worth getting excited over. its got a little too much body for sessioning, but i could see it as a crowd pleaser and a good cooking beer. ive been impressed with recent saranac releases, but this one is nothing special at all.

Pours a deep caramel amber brown hue with a light beige head forms even speckled lacing as it drifts away.

Aroma hints of raisin and dark fruit mild caramel with a touch of chocolate in the nose.

Flavor upfront punch of malts and mild roasted character going on finishes with some light herbal hops in the back end.

Mouthfeel is medium to light bodied pretty full on carbonation levels, a bit of harshness punches the palate...I expect extreme smoothness with any dunkel style lager.

Overall, not bad for a new beer from a Saranac holiday sampler.

I enjoyed this beer from a bottle. Was good copper color with nice malty aromas. Tasted good, but was hoping for a tad more alcohol to warm me on the cool winter evening.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass, best by 3/31/15

A- pours a deep brown color with a small creamy off-white head that retains long after the pour, leaving some lacing behind 4

S- sweet and malty aroma with notes of brown bread, caramel malt, slightly nutty

T- strange cardboard flavor up front that eventually transitions into brown bread, raisin & caramel malt, more dark fruit on the finish

M- medium body with medium-low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish

O- drinkable, but doesn't quite mesh like the classic German examples

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with a Best By date of March 31, 2015. Sampled on February 1, 2015.

It pours mahogany-red with a tiny slightly off-white to tan head. Great clarity.

The aroma is sweet and malty.

Thin body.

The taste is also sweet and malty with a quick, clean finish. Nothing special but not difficult to drink.

A: The beer is crystal clear dark reddish amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short beige head that quickly died down, leaving only a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of toasted malts are present in the nose along with notes of earthy hops.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of toasted malts and malt extracts. There is a little bit of malty sweetness and only faint amounts of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. Hints of wateriness are also apparent.
O: This beer is easy to drink, but lacks the complexity and body compared to the top examples in the style.
