Saranac The Heart Of The HopSaranac The Heart Of The Hop
Notes: At the heart of this beer is a citrusy combination of Simcoe and Citra hops, while a Rye malt adds a dry spiciness and carafa malts give it the dark amber hue.

This beer is worth a try....its not great, but I like the attempt at hopped up reds. The beer poured an amber color with small floaties and thin white heat that is not really leaving a lace. The scent is hoppy...the taste is more bitter which I come to except from East coast ipas. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it average at best.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a darker amber color. The head is two fingers high, with an off-white shade. Retention isn't that special, though a lot of lacing is left behind. (3.5)

Smell: Like a lot of Saranac's hoppier brews, it smells more bitter than nuanced. I get a lot of piny notes endemic of Simcoe, but no real fruitiness. Some rye spice does appear, and I like it a lot. Otherwise, though, the nose is almost dangerously insipid. (2.75)

Taste: At first, it's very bitter. However, the rye malt actually ballasts the bitterness nicely. It finishes with more general malt sweetness. Pretty average, but the rye saves it from a worse fate. (3)

Mouthfeel: Light and dry, just like I expected from a Saranac brew. It's also an astringent-feeling brew, too astringent in fact. Still, the drinkability is high, same with the carbonation. (3)

Overall: More average work from Saranac. It won't offend, nor will it impress. While the hops fail to show up properly, the rye character is well done. Like many Saranac brews, I won't look for it - but if this is in whatever mixed 12-pack of the week these guys release, I'll gladly drink 'em. (3)

Dubbed as a 'Red IPA', the Heart of the Hop pours a medium to deep amber though lighter than expected. Offers good clarity and a light cap of foam. Moderate retention at best.

Muddled caramel notes and some hops on the aroma. Bit chewy. Light hop bitterness belies the IPA moniker. Warming reveals an even lighter bitterness on the palate. The best thing about this beer is that it doesn't have any obvious faults or old hops. That said it is quite askew of what I would consider an IPA, Red or otherwise.

Type: 12-oz. beer
Glass: Figueroa Mountain pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $10.99 for a variety 12-pack (12 Beers a Springing)
Purchased: April 22, 2015
Consumed: April 24, 2015
Misc.: Best by June 30, 2015 at 8:56 a.m.

Poured caramel, honey, clear color with three fingers of khaki, frothy head. Some slow-moving bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good amount of sporadic spotty lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled a pleasant whiff of spicy Simcoe, Citra, Cascade, pine, sharp grapefruit, lime, caramel, light mango rind and other tropical notes. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste wasn’t nearly as good as the nose, maybe close in the beginning. Got Simcoe, Citra, pine, lime and bitter grapefruit rind up front, but then a quick move to boozy, astringent alcohol, light rye and nectarine rind. Bad aftertaste in mouth. (Taste - 3.50)

Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, bitter, astringent finish. (Feel - 3.50)

This could have been so much better, but just not quite there. Great smell and look, but too unbalanced with boozy taste. (Overall - 3.50)

Best by 6/30/15.

Pours a murky dark orange-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and slight rye aromas. Taste is much the same with rye, earth, citrus zest, and grapefruit juice flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of rye and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a nice mix of rye and citrus forward hop characteristics all around.

Serving type: bottle.

A great beer for outdoor grilling and opening day Tiger baseball.Pours into a nonic a clear deep bronze with a thinner but well sustained off white head atop.Citrus hops and caramel malts battle for the aroma crown with the hops winning slightly,a decent smack of the rye malt in there as well.Caramel with a touch of butter melds into dry semi sharp rye and a good punch of citric hops in the finish, this is pretty damn good! Not a bad thing to say about this Saranac offering, better than I thought it would be.

Had from bottle and really liked it. Nice coppery, red color with plenty of hops coming out. slight spicyness from hops, rye going down and finished well. was surprising for me.

From the 12 fl. oz bottle best by June 30, 2015. Sampled on March 6, 2015

Copper-amber pour with good clarity and modest cream colored head.

Citrus, floral hops on the nose with a grainy malt underbelly.

Light to medium body.

Grainy malts at first. Floral bitterness abounds in the taste to finish slightly dry.
