Saranac Summer PilsSaranac Summer Pils
Notes: Why is Summer Pils the perfect summer refreshment? Becauase this German Pilsener uses traditional (Tettnang) and exciting (Cluster, Cascade and Belma) hops for a floral and citrus aroma, with a tropical fruit and spicy hop flavor – some may even call it WILD HOP.

Summer is in the name…because the light malt body and hop finish pair together for a crisp and refreshing companion perfect for the long hot day, cool breezy nights and in-between.

DATE: July 14, 2017... OCCASION: watching The Temple of Doom with the boys... GLASSWARE: PSU pilsner... light, clear golden body that produces sparse bubbles and a quarter-finger off-white head that rings slightly... not much to look at... heavy lemon zest and grassy, floral hints that suggest the spring before the summer... modest cracker and honey offer some balance, but overall a bit underwhelming... body is placid, encouraging in each sip, with a slight fizzle at its entrance and no trace of it at the finish... flavor profile is weak, with the lemon grass, cracker and enough noble hops to gently nudge the taste buds.... tough to hate on a pilsner that promises a partnership with the sun and summer, so I will applaud its rather restrained experience with the caveat that I would only drink this in a particular setting... otherwise, I would line this up with the MANY other Saranac offerings that get lost in the shuffle of mediocrity...

Look: It pours yellow with a white head. Head retention is moderately low.

Smell: It has aromas of herbs, grainy sweetness, and a hint of cheese. There is also a slight bit of grass.

Taste: It is grainy sweet with bread. There are some herbal elements with grass and a slight bit of cheese.

Feel: It has a light feel and a grassy and herbal aftertaste.

Overall, the flavors and combinations just didn't work well for me.

L: Clear gold with some rising bubbles, and a huge creamy white head that dies down fairly quick into a sticky film that leaves splotches of lacing.

S: Fairly sweet and bready with a big honey sweetness with white bread and toasty bread crusts, complimented and balanced by a moderate cool and herbal hop note leaning towards mint, but with a juicy honeydew melon note, and some grass.

T: Grass, honeydew melon, clover, even a touch of pineapple upfront. Then a big toasty white bread malt backbone that slides into a sticky wildflower honey sweetness, but still ends crisp, clean, and dry, with just a touch of grassy bitterness.

F: Medium, with a boisterous carbonation to moves the beer quickly on the palate, making it feel fuller than it actually as. Becomes quite quaffable.

O: A great summer pilsner. Still one of my favorite summer seasonals and arguably still Saranac's best beer in this BA's opinion. Leans towards the sweeter end of pilsners, but it still crisp, clean, dry, and very drinkable, with a unique hop character.

I'm rating this as a Pilsner, which is what it doesn't taste like. It tastes more like a pale ale. As a pale ale, I really like this beer. Not a good Pilsner.

Pours a crystal clear straw color with a small wispy white head that dissipated into nothingness, no lacing.

The aroma is grainy with a grassy and peppery hop scent. Smells like a Pils.

The taste is of a dry crackery malt, light grains. The hops are grassy and peppery. Some metallic bitterness in the finish that is a little rough.

The feel is light and fizzy. Dry and bitter on the palate.

Definitely hits the Pils notes. The odd bitterness is a negative.

Have been seeking German Pilsners for a long time and this is absolutely one of the best new one I have had in a while. Historically I have felt that FX Matt attempts at micros come up a little short of true micros but this one waa without question a homerun.

Bought a 6 pack from Wegmans, early May 2016. Served in a Duvel tulip at fridge temp.

Look: old gold, thick craggy natural white head, nice lacing

Smell: sour hops, bready malt, yum

Taste: balanced bitterness to dry crackery malt

Feel: soft, supple

Overall: Saranac hits a home run here in my book. Easy drinking, nostalga

pours gold with a solid head. nice looking carbonation, looks pretty good in my pils glass.

smell is mellow, has a nice malty grain aroma. spicy noble hops as well.

taste is just ok. noble hops are there and the malt is very present. not bad but far from great. crisp yet rounded, an off sharp taste to it.

overall this isn't great but it's good enough. it's cheap and drinkable!

This beer pours a crystal clear magnificent shade of gold with a dense one finger bright white head. Retention is very good and there are tons of webs of lacing. Smell is biscuity and crackery malts with floral and spicy hops notes. Taste is similar, but is very grainy and that bleeds into the after taste. Feel is light, but not as crisp as I like in a pilsner. Overall good not great. There are so many better summer pilsners out there that I can't see myself revisiting this one.

There is no better time than scouring the singles at Country Garden 6-Pack here in Lancaster, PA! It is a double-plus bonus that my new workplace is just down the street.

From the bottle: "Summer Pils is a crisp, refreshing German style pilsener with an American (hop) twist. Perfect for summer days, nights and in-between. One of a kind."

I Pop!ped the cap and commenced a heavy-handed pour to celebrate the eve of the weekend! This created two-plus fingers of fluffy, bone-white head with not only good retention, but it left nice lacing in its wake. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity. My Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon and Croesus stopped by for a sip, so I sat back and transcribed some info. Nose had a brilliant Saaz hops grassiness and now my mouth was watering! Mouthfeel was light, not thin, but unobtrusive. The taste was very grassy in the mouth, so I am unsure as to what the "American (hop) twist" refers to. It was a very pleasant beer on a humid summer evening. Finish was dry, more Czech-like than German, but just my sort of example of a Pils. I could drink this more often.

Poured into a standard pint glass, color is straw gold, head is bright white head, light lacing and then dissipates to muddled top.

Smell is pilsen malt, grassy hops, very nice crisp pilsner aroma.

Taste is fairly clean, a little more subtle graininess and/or adjunct like flavors noted, pilsen malt flavors and grassy crisp hops.

Mouthfeel is a clean and refreshing upfront, then crisper and sharper on the finish, maybe a too much carbonation.

Overall, a good american pilsner, some off notes int he flavor but great, enticing aroma.

Looks good:clear gold with a thick, white head that hangs around much longer than most pils. Honey, grainy malt aroma. Interesting hop profile - kinda melon, strawberry, cantaloupe mix. Like the liquid at the bottom of a bowl of fruit salad. Ok but not my thing.

Saranac Summer Pils - Matt Brewing Company / Saranac Brewery. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, this brew's head is two fingers thick with secular lacing, and a clear golden body.

I smell earthy grains and brighter malts. Nice and easy going.

Tastes like smooth grains and lighter hops. A small touch of citrus zest at the end. Certainly a summer kind of taste.

The mouthfeel here is clean and refreshing.

Overall, I'll give Saranac Summer Pils - Matt Brewing Company / Saranac Brewery a 4.25

Sweet Little pilsner, Im so glad this style is making a come back. Had it in the can from Saranacs kixed can pack. Super drinkable with a bit of a hop kick finish. As far as Pilseners go, this is one of the best I've had.

this beer is a whole lot better than its ratings, and perhaps because it is so interestingly hopped it doesnt really fit the normal pils bill, but thats what makes it groovy in my opinion. i agree with other reviewers that the fuller body and long hoppy finish make it perhaps not an ideal summer drink, but thats beside the point that this is quite tasty. floral hops on it, good bitterness, and the belma is obvious. its a hop i have seen get quite popular lately, and while the jury is still out on its impact in an ipa type, in a lighter beer like this its really nice. the yeast is solid and efficient as the beer is neatly lagered and plenty dry, crisp, and refreshing. the added hops are what makes it stand out, and its pretty intense, notes of pine and melon in here, less citrus, but just as soothing and appropriate. id scale the body back just a bit, and maybe even the alcohol a little to make it a more suitable summer beer, but i dont really think any true beer geek is going ot get hung up on a medium bodied pils at just over 5% abv, we should still be able to hammer these, lets not get that picky. nice to see these guys putting out new beers all the time. i think it may prevent any of them from ever being perfect, but its nice to have all the new flavors all the time. i miss these guys out here in colorado.

Tried this for the first time while at a bar watching the Blackhawks-Lightning game. Had three pints, the third of which the bartender bought me while I was in the restroom and really didn't want. I do not find this to be a crisp, refreshing, "summery" kind of beer at all. Can think of quite a few German Pilsners I'd rather have than this.

Short lived finger of white foam reduces to a scant island atop a clear golden beer.

Medium strength aroma is tart lager yeast mixed with citrus and spicy herbal hop and crisp grainy sweet.

Full flavored, with all the flavors in the nose represented, tart yeast less of a flavor, and the hops magnified. Really tasty and balanced mix of flavors, with an end of sip that is just right.

Light and refreshing, nicely medium carbonation for style, great finish that is clean and tasty linger.

Really delicious beer that I highly recommend. The hop bill is different than a "normal" pilsener, and works well.

Pretty sure that this is the same as the Wild Hop Pils that came out last year, but it tastes slightly different, so I'll review it anyway. The citrus and floral hop characters really stand out in this more so than in other examples of the style. The body remains light without feeling too watered down, making it a great warm weather drink
