Why is Summer Pils the perfect summer refreshment? Becauase this German Pilsener uses traditional (Tettnang) and exciting (Cluster, Cascade and Belma) hops for a floral and citrus aroma, with a tropical fruit and spicy hop flavor – some may even call it WILD HOP.

Summer is in the name…because the light malt body and hop finish pair together for a crisp and refreshing companion perfect for the long hot day, cool breezy nights and in-between.

Tried this for the first time while at a bar watching the Blackhawks-Lightning game. Had three pints, the third of which the bartender bought me while I was in the restroom and really didn't want. I do not find this to be a crisp, refreshing, "summery" kind of beer at all. Can think of quite a few German Pilsners I'd rather have than this.

Seems significantly more hoppy than the average pilsner.

Pours clear, gold in color with one inch head. Taste is grass and earthy hops. Light bodied, slightly bitter with moderate carbonation. Makes for a slightly above average German pils. Easy enough to drink but not horribly exciting either.

DATE: July 14, 2017... OCCASION: watching The Temple of Doom with the boys... GLASSWARE: PSU pilsner... light, clear golden body that produces sparse bubbles and a quarter-finger off-white head that rings slightly... not much to look at... heavy lemon zest and grassy, floral hints that suggest the spring before the summer... modest cracker and honey offer some balance, but overall a bit underwhelming... body is placid, encouraging in each sip, with a slight fizzle at its entrance and no trace of it at the finish... flavor profile is weak, with the lemon grass, cracker and enough noble hops to gently nudge the taste buds.... tough to hate on a pilsner that promises a partnership with the sun and summer, so I will applaud its rather restrained experience with the caveat that I would only drink this in a particular setting... otherwise, I would line this up with the MANY other Saranac offerings that get lost in the shuffle of mediocrity...

Look: It pours yellow with a white head. Head retention is moderately low.

Smell: It has aromas of herbs, grainy sweetness, and a hint of cheese. There is also a slight bit of grass.

Taste: It is grainy sweet with bread. There are some herbal elements with grass and a slight bit of cheese.

Feel: It has a light feel and a grassy and herbal aftertaste.

Overall, the flavors and combinations just didn't work well for me.

L: Clear gold with some rising bubbles, and a huge creamy white head that dies down fairly quick into a sticky film that leaves splotches of lacing.

S: Fairly sweet and bready with a big honey sweetness with white bread and toasty bread crusts, complimented and balanced by a moderate cool and herbal hop note leaning towards mint, but with a juicy honeydew melon note, and some grass.

T: Grass, honeydew melon, clover, even a touch of pineapple upfront. Then a big toasty white bread malt backbone that slides into a sticky wildflower honey sweetness, but still ends crisp, clean, and dry, with just a touch of grassy bitterness.

F: Medium, with a boisterous carbonation to moves the beer quickly on the palate, making it feel fuller than it actually as. Becomes quite quaffable.

O: A great summer pilsner. Still one of my favorite summer seasonals and arguably still Saranac's best beer in this BA's opinion. Leans towards the sweeter end of pilsners, but it still crisp, clean, dry, and very drinkable, with a unique hop character.
