L: An orange amber with a finger of white head. Recedes quickly but leaves some patchy lacing down the glass.

S: Tangerine, grapefruit, some pine.

T: Tangerine, a little grapefruit and pine bitterness on the end.

F: Quite smooth. Goes down easy. Medium to light body with moderate to high carbonation.

This delicious offering by Saranac pours a beautiful hazy gold/amber color with a white head. The notes of the citrus from the clemintine clearly come through in the odor. The taste further exhibits the citrus character, and is only slightly mitigated by a sour taste after being across the tongue for a few seconds.

I would definitely buy more of this and recommend it to beer drinkers of all levels.

Matt Brewing Co. "Saranac Clementine Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, production coded but without freshness dating

The label states that this is "brewed with clementine, citrus peel, and tangerine" and it tastes like it. You'll find it in the aroma but it's much clearer in the taste. The aroma is more generically citrusy whereas the flavors are distinct. It's not the most citrusy beer I've ever had, but that's probably a good thing, at least in this case, as it also comes through as a pretty solid pale ale. Given the citrusy hops in play today I hardly doubt that anyone who didn't know there was fruit in there would imagine there was; and then I have to ask the question, why use fruit? Isn't that just an added expense, and more work in brewing? Hmmm... I think it actually gives it a bit more life and character. It's authentic, and remarkably refreshing, and therefore probably worth it. It's not that bitter (40 IBUs) but the bitterness comes through clearly, and along with the acidity of the citrus and some piney/grassy/herbal hops, it finishes dry. Really nicely done, and superbly balanced. Highly drinkable.

Purchased for 3.99 a six from my favorite ghetto grocery store so I am guessing it was out of date. Poured cloudy orange amber with a decent off white head. The head stayed throughout the glass and left great lacing. The smell was nothing special and bitterish. The taste was surprising considering how old it was and where it came from. The pale ale base was still there and the clementine was very present but not too overpowering. It tasted like the bitter citrus you get when you squeeze a tangerine peel and the oily juice squirts into the air. The beer was good. The warmer it became the more tasty it became because the pale ale portion became more up front. I have never been a Saranac fan but after this I will take a closer look.
