it seems like everyone is making a beer like this now, i guess since white claw has killer beer so badly, we have no choice but to try to get some volume back from the health conscious drinkers. i know, i know, cut calories and carbs elsewhere, but this has lasted too long to be a trend, so breweries are getting on it. for what this is, its pretty good, certainly better than some of the others ive had in this quickly emerging category. it does have some of that classic saranac house taste to it, malty for ipa most of the time, with a slightly sharp english complexion on the finish and a little bit of a metallic thing, which stands pretty exposed in a lighter offering like this, but which does not ruin the beer. some citrus to the hops, some crystal character to the grain, pretty straightforward stuff, except the body and the alcohol are dropped right out of it. its carbonated like a soda, which makes it refreshing when its at its coldest, but not a real complex or interesting beer in flavor or texture. what i do like about it is the lightness and that it still tastes like ipa, i could care less about the calorie count or whatever the motive for this is. very saranac-esque beer, nostalgic more than good in this one, but fine for the summer.

First and most significantly (and I wish I could add this after each rating category,) This Is A Light Beer. I really don't like light beers much - they're closer to wine spritzers than beer, IMHO.

That being said -- this one is pretty good! I think I've finally found a light (100 calorie, 4% ABV) beer I can actually enjoy and not feel like I'm just going through the motions. Most light beers I've had are dominated by a thin, watery mouth feel and taste, with a fleeting hint of the style they claim. So I was dubious from the get-go, but pleasantly surprised by the hoppy bite and citrus finish -- not impressive for a true IPA, but for a Light Beer -- wow!
