Matt Brewing Company / Saranac Brewery
New York, United States

Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Saranac Blueberry Blonde Ale is a traditional blonde ale with a kick of juicy blueberry. You'll notice a light golden haze from wheat malt and oats and a low hop bitterness, which really shows off the fruit. With a medium-light body and fresh blueberry flavor, we're sure we've captured refreshment in a bottle!

Body is very murky and looks almost like a sun rise on a cloudy morning. Head is short and off white and fades almost as fast as I type this sentence. Nose reminds me of candied blueberries and blueberry glazed cAke doughnuts. Blueberry taste is very fake and almost like a cleaning solution. This is a flavor that comes of so artificial that it is really unattractive even for this style. Some may find it drinkable.

32 ounce jug. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a hazy gold color with about a half inch white head that stuck around for a while. There's a small amount of lacing. The brew smells like sweet malt, blueberries, and a bit of citrus. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like sweet/grainy malt, artificial blueberry flavoring, and some lemon. There's also a lightly bitter finish. Also, the blueberry was stronger in the aroma than it was in the taste. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it has a good amount of carbonation and it's easy enough to drink. This one really didn't do anything for me, I think I would have liked it more if the blueberry flavor was stronger. With that being said, it's worth a try at least once but it's not something I'd drink very often.

Appearance- light golden color, very thin head
Smell- malt, slight blueberry
Taste- some malt, blueberry
Mouthfeel- light to medium bodied
Drinkability- I thought it was pretty good actually. The blueberry wasn't in your face but you could still definitely taste it. I liked that.

was happily surprised after my first sip. The taste of blueberries is prevalent, but not overwhelming. This beer is also light enough to have more then a few without filling up. Not a fan of fruit beers , but this beer was much better then other blueberry beers I've had and would recommend it to anyone.

Big Blueberry aroma that made me worried I was going to drink straight blueberry juice, but was happily surprised after my first sip. The taste of blueberries is prevalent, but not overwhelming. This beer is also light enough to have more then a few without filling up. Not a fan of fruit beers usually, but this beer was much better then other blueberry beers I've had and would recommend it to anyone.

Quite a deal if you ask me a howler (two 1/2 beers) for 4.69? SWEET!

A - Quite hazy for a blonde but it does have a rocking two inches of head that slowly dissipates.
S - Light cereal grains with blueberry muffin like whiffing. Somewhat sweet and tart smelling.
T - Well its not as expected very faint blueberry flavor mixed with a honey like sweetness and mild grain bill. Little hoping. Not bad but not great
M - Light and easy to drink.

Overall its a pretty good blonde ale with mild blueberry flavors but I think I will stick to blueberry wheat ales for more intense fruit flavor.

Pours a murky yellow-orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, blueberry cereal, and dried blueberry aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, blueberry cereal, and blueberry juice flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with decent blueberry qualities that get better as the beer warms up.

Serving type: bottle.

Pale orange with small white head steadily shrinking to ring.

Aroma is light grain, hints of apple cider, grass, plus a firm, clear but not strong element of blueberry.

Taste is first sweetish light blueberry with grain, then vague grassy bitterness and lightly bitter, almost chemically-peppery blueberry skin. Faint grain aftertaste with faint blueberry, overall a bit thin of character and the almost chemically bite of the blueberry is a negative. Body and feel are pretty good, a bit lively, not really watery. Blueberry if clearly present but not overpowering, yet it is not a very good character. It's not a terrible beer by any means but it's not very good, either.

Pours light hazed yellow with a thin fluffy head. Some lacing sticks.

The smell is of light blueberry.

The taste is of blueberry with a hint of wheat tang.

The feel is rather fizzy and light.

A typical, average American fruit beer. The blueberry is on the soft side, especially in the nose and there's not much else to it.

S-toasted bread, blueberry, sweet sugar, hint of yeast

T-malt, artificial blueberry flavor, light yeast, light sugary sweetness

F-light body with moderate carbonation, crisp

O-too artificial tasting, would like to try the base beer alone

M: light body, higher carbonation, watery

O: blueberry flavor is good, refreshing beer

Poured from a 12 fl oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: pours a light, hazy golden blonde with a small, white head. No real lacing present. Head dissipates slightly as you drink.

Smell: Blueberry on the nose right from the start as you're pouring this beer. Also wheat. Reminds me of booberry cereal.

Taste: Similar to the smell. Expect blueberries and wheat, with maybe a slight hop presence. No alcohol present in the taste.

Mouthfeel: dry over the palate and somewhat watery. Moderate to medium carbonation.

Overall: this is a smooth beer, and it does develop as it warms. However, this is not a beer with enough going to keep me coming back. The blueberries are present, but this beer seems too watery. A decent try, but not extraordinary.

A: The beer is hazy yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high off white head that died down but never completely faded away and also left lacy rings of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of blueberries are present in the nose along with some hints of wheat; the blueberry smell seems to be a little artificial and becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Similar to the smell, the blueberry flavors seem to be a little artificial and these stand out in front of notes of wheat and grainy malts. Neither sweetness nor bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied and a little watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer goes down rather easily and the blueberry aromas and flavors help to brighten up what would otherwise be a very ordinary beer.

A-cloudy and not as bubbly as most ales

S-Great, but only because i love blueberries

T-Kind of sour but cant expect much from an ale

M-Leave a dry taste in my mouth.

Good beer. Good for after dinner but not an all night beer. ABV only 5%. I prefer higher apv ratings

Saranac Blueberry Blonde Ale (2013) - Good head degrades to nice lacing. Deep straw hazy and all wheat ale like. Blue berries... and.... ummm... something... maybe lemon, maybe lime, maybe orange... some citrus in the smell behind that blue berry. Creamy nose. Blueberries and ale mid palate. Hint of bread courtesy of malt. No hops. No citrus (where was that smell coming from... they're killing me here). Mid-palate I swear I'm eating a muffin soaked in beer. This is not a bad thing. I have admittedly eaten a blue berry muffin with a Yuengling... I'm here to tell you that is EXACTLY what mid-palate I taste. Fades to minor hops and lots more blue berries. Nice ale light copper, light wheat beer taste. There's the blonde ale. It's hiding, but it's there. After taste is all blue berries and malt. More muffins. Brillant. Surprisingly drinkable. Very good mouth feel. Not a fruit beer fan, but as a dessert beer this is probably near the tops. Puts Sam's Cherry Wheat to shame. Wouldn't do it as a session beer. Definitely dessert or stand alone beer. No meals or chips with this one. Mix cautiously and you'll be rewarded. 3.5 out of 5. Fairly good.

Date Rated: May 4, 2013... Glassware: nondescript pint... Occasion: slowing down after a long week... Appearance: slightly hazy pale blond ale with tremendous effervescence; thick and thin bubbles stream skyward to a thick white head--great lacing... Aroma: fragrant, candied blueberry scent; appropriate to the bottle's label... Palate: rather smooth start with little bite; rather diminished and rinselike in the finish... Taste: somewhat malty, with soft hops that do not balance well; odd fruity esters ensue with a mostly plain American pilsner profile... Overall: as novelties go, the fruit beers refresh and remind me of the German/Bavarian traditions with authentic additives--this beer seems to follow that tradition distantly, without the prerequisite fruit or lightness....

A- pours goldish and hazy with a bubble and fizzy white head with decent retention

S- smells like blueberry muffins with a bit of sweet malt to balance it out

T- sweet, with a crisp malt backbone, subtle blueberry with a slightly tart & dry finish

M- light body with low carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and slick finish, high drinkability

O- a basic fruit beer that isn't extreme by any means, but a good option of the beach, which is where I enjoyed it. Not their best beer, but certainly drinkable

bought as part of Saranac's Summer Variety pack from Southtown Beverages on 4/26/13 for $ 7.99.

poured from a 12 oz bottle into a glass tumbler, served at fridge temp.

appearance: hazy lemon yellow with a one finger white head. no lacing.

aroma: blueberries, pale malt, faintest whiff of hops.

mouthfeel: decent

taste: bready malt with lots of blueberries and a some noble style hops at the end.

notes: fruit beers aren't really my thing. this is drinkable and the blueberries are very noticeable which makes the beer somewhat interesting. A novelty item for sure.

A: A medium gold with some haze and a slight purple hue. The head is long lasting, white and made of a small, rocky bubble.

S: Moderately-strong blueberry aroma with a light citrus hops and a moderate malt sweetness. There is a bit of a metallic aroma. No diacetyl.

T: There is the initial soft malty sweetness typical of a Blonde with a moderately-low hop bitterness. The moderate blueberry flavor doesn't overpower the ale. The balance is slightly bitter with a dry finish and a lemony aftertaste.

M: This beer has a moderately-light body with moderately-strong carbonation. There is a slight prickle at the tip of the tongue.

O: An easy to drink lawnmower type ale with some blueberry flavor and a fair amount of aroma. The fruit isn't so strong that it would stop me from having another on a hot day.

Poured into a pint glass.

Pours a cloudy gold. Has a near white dense head. Tons of bubbles and a thick head remains along with very good lacing throughout the session. Good looks here.

Brew smells of big blueberry and yeast. Big fruity nose. Good nose.

Brew is crisp and peppery upfront. Some mild hop bitterness is balanced by good wheat flavors and of course nice blueberry flavors. As advertised, a blond ale with some good blueberry flavoring. Finishes crisp and slighty bitter and semi sweet. A good fruit beer. Good.

A highly sessionable brew that drinks well and would be a good treat to switch things up or have for a get summer bbq. I am not the biggest fruit beer guy, but this one works nicely. A good brew that would be a good lawnmower brew. Good stuff.

12oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Slightly hazy light amber body under a finger of fine white head that leaves nice lace. Attractive.

S: Artificial blueberry, like in laffy taffy or a gas station muffin. I don't hate it at all, but I fi kind of hate myself for not hating it.

T: Lightly flavored, but what's here is unpleasant. Fake blueberry and dull bitterness. Watery finish. Meh.

M: Thin and watery at first, with some prickly carbonation thereafter. Not good.

O: Not recommended, even for those looking for a bland fruit beer.

Big white to slightly off white head slowly falls into a nice lacing above a clearish honey golden colored beer.

Fresh warm blueberry muffins aroma with just a bit of some pale hops sneaking in.

A light blueberry muffin like taste with some lesser hops notes.

A light dry aftertaste with those same blueberry muffin tastes sticking around on this light bodied drink from Matt Brewing.

As far as fruit/vegetable beers go this is a pretty good one, the taste of the blueberries is big but not overbearing and artificial tasting like a lot of beers in this style.

Poured this one into a pint glass. It has a nice golden color body with a nice 1" white foamy head that hangs around for a while. The smell is straight up blueberry and a little bit of malt.
The taste is very nice of blueberry with a little bit of hops. This one taste real not fake or real sweet like some fruit beers are. The mouth feel is nice and smooth and the blueberry flavor lingers on the tongue. Overall this is a really good fruit beer and i could drink this one all summer long.

Served in a wellington glass.

Appearance: Slightly hazy gold, maybe a little darker than your usual. Head is about 1/8" coming off white with little depth to it.; dissipating to nothing after a sip.

Smell: Has a hard acai scent to it, but goes in one nostril and out the other.

Taste: If there is a sweet beer here it is. No not like soda sweet but more like the fruit beer you wish you always had.

Mouth: Medium, smooth and no complaints.

Overall: For what this beer is, it satisfies the buds. I am not a fanatic of the fruit beers but this beers has a taste that is not soda like others. You are drinking a real fruit brew. Salud!
