Matt Brewing Co. "Saranac 4059' Porter"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BB MAR 31 2016"

A rough pour brings up a finger thick head of creamy dark tan over a brown-black body. The head drops steadily, leaving a ring of spotty lace about the glass, but beyond that there's not much. Overall the head retention and lacing could be better.

The aroma expresses a combination of black coffee-like roastiness and dark bittersweet chocolate with some limited leafy and grassy hops in the background. At times it can almost appear smoky.

The flavor displays a touch of caramel, fuller hops, and a delicate note of fruitiness although it basically remains heavily roasty and chocolatey. It's solidly bitter, and an edge of dark malt acidity whisks it away into a dry and ashen finish. Surprisingly the hops are mainly found across the middle, and don't appear too strongly in the finish.

In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp with a fine-bubbled, moderate carbonation. As it warms it softens to become quite smooth and velvety.

In the end it's a solid porter that doesn't stray from its English roots, and one which takes a robust porter almost into stout territory with a full-on roastiness.

Pours the darkest brown. Actually black. Black in beer is such a dark brown. A ruby highlight and tan head of creamy foam that fell quickly. Clear.

Hops are English Golding, Northdown and Fuggles

Nose is huge caramel and plenty of roasty malt. Coffee like impression. Hops are a moderate presence. They give a woody softness and gentle spice. There's a light chocolate that's also soft. Dark fruit lightly in the background. What is giving this nose sweetness is floral form those hops. Just outstanding hops presentation. Malt has a lightly blackened quality. A burnt edge if you will but no harsh flavors. Nothing astringent or acrid. Roasty flavors. Strong dry and bitter. Caramel is smooth but the roasty malt won't let you see too much sweetness form it. Bitter chocolate and a bitter hop finish this one to show some nuttiness and a roasty dryness. Exemplary in every way. The definition of robust in the robust porter.
