Matt Brewing Co. "Saranac Legacy IPA"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BB MAR 31 2016"

A steady pour brings up a two-finger thick head of frothy white foam over a clear deep-gold body. The head holds well before dropping, leaving a tall ring of thick lace about the glass. It eventually erodes into tiny spots and streaks, but each subsequent sip leaves a new layer of thick lacing that takes its own time to break down.

The aroma is bright with notes of citrus, pine resin, grass, some tropical fruit, and even a touch of cat-piss. Not much malt makes its way past, but there's a little bit there, gently sweet and grainy.

In the mouth it's medium-bodied and crisp with a fine-bubbled, standard carbonation.

The hops return in the flavor, but rather than dominating they take a back seat allowing the malt to shine. It's grainy, just lightly sweet, and it appears as if it might be pilsner malt, or at least a high quality American 2-row. It's solidly bitter, but not overdone, and the balance between sweet grainy malt and citrusy and grassy hops is exquisite. It finishes dry with some lingering grassy and lightly citrusy hops.

With the exception of the cat-piss in the nose (which is really not that bad anyway, and obviously a trade-off for bringing in other aromas), it's a really well-done and superbly balanced IPA that delivers both hops and malt - all without being too brash or overbearing that it loses drinkability.

This is a great IPA for a long session. Really has a nice hop bite while still being crisp and balanced. Not for the weak of heart for certain! A great beer to celebrate 125 years of amazing brewing tradition in my home town of Utica, NY.

In contrast to others, I think this gets better as it warms and as it goes. By the end of my first glass, I wanted another.

A: 4.25 - because it has a very tight, cotton candy, lacey head over a very light colored, hazed straw golden body.
S: 3.5 - Too faint. Light aromas of biscuit malts underneath grapefruit/pineapple hops.
T: 3.5 - Starts with light, bright biscuit malts with a bit of caramel sweetness. Followed by predominantly tropical, pineapple hops, a bit of sun warmed hay, and a long, slightly watery, but otherwise pleasing finish.
MF: 3.7 Enough weight and pleasing feel to invite another.

Saranac's best?

Good to see Saranac make a true quality craft IPA.Pours a burnt orange color with atight formed half finger white head that settles pretty slowly leaving a nice ring behind.Citrusy aromas with mild biscuit like sweetness detected as well, grapefruit stands out most.A good splach of citric fruitiness at the onset of the palate, grapefruit and a tropical quality with only light biterness in the finish, sweetish biscuit malts hold up well to the hops with just a hint of alcohol sweetness as well.A solid American IPA here with alot of hops, stick to stuff like this Saranac.

16 ounce can

No freshness info

A- hazed lighter amber, moderate off white head, quickly fades, leaves a nice looking film and respectable webs of higher lace.

S-Pleasantly fruity hopped up nose

T- Pleasant IPA on the fruity side, with moderate to lower bitterness. I get some light tropical fruit, and again moderate hopping. Easy drinking and quite enjoyable.

M- Medium bodied, carbonation seems to on point for the style

O- Doesn't quite rise to the level of the heavy hitters of the style, but this is a worthy effort from Saranac.

Worth a try

Slightly cloudy light amber pour with a white head that dissapates quickly. Malty sweet with a medium hop finish that does not assault the palate. A very enjoyable beer. Considering I prefer malty low IBV dark beers, this IPA was very enjoyable.

Bought a 12 bottles on sale. Thought I'd give it try. Sorry but balance is not good. Boozy and bitter. I love great IPAs. This ain't one of em.

I like the use of pale malts in this IPA, most Saranac hopped up beers have a ton of caramel colored malts. Big slightly off white biscuit textured thicket of foam, fine even speckled lacing as it slowly dwindles appears on the sides of my glass.

Aroma has big hops upfront in addition to herbal/pine notes I’m getting some garlic/onion (a sure sign of Summit hops). Mild citrus barely a trace of tropical notes this is a much danker approach so far, biscuit malts provide a bit of bready perceived sweetness.

Flavor dry herbal pine and citrus notes no real malt base to complement, tastes just like pelletized hop water…a lingering garlic/onion note really summarizes the finish for me. This is rough, unbalanced a mess of an IPA really.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied slightly thick with hop oils, goes down a bit harsh one sided hop profile lets the palate adjust about half way through the 12 ounce portion. Carbonation carries everything quite nicely.

Overall, if you are in a bind for some hops this would do especially in can format on a hot day or in the new fall sampler super fresh with some other decent beers…this IPA, Dark-toberfest, their awesome schwarzbier, pumpkin ale, Oktoberfest, and a nice Autumn pils.
