Slightly lighter than a Porter. Very subtle smell and taste. Drinkable but not that complex

March 25, 2016

12 oz. bottle, weizen glass

A – Very deep brown, with some tinges of black in the wider parts of the glass. Quite clear though, where not opaque due to density. Only a millimeter or two of off-white to very light tan bubbles, dissipating quickly.

S – Caramel and significant chocolate, though not very sweet, more like nibs. A moderate amount of pleasant roasted notes. A barely noticeable hint of vanilla rounds things out. Light herbal hop notes, barely there.

T – Roasted, but not burnt, chocolate with underlying caramel. Only light sweetness. Herbal, perhaps hay or dried grass, hops on the back end. Some hop bitterness is barely apparent on the finish. A mild astringency on the aftertaste. Starts strong but finishes on a down note.

M – Moderate carbonation and a medium body. Slight dryness on the finish, not much needed since the malt isn’t particularly sweet. Low bitterness, just enough for balance. Slight astringency is the only flaw.

O – This is really close to being a very good beer, with a bit more dialing in. A nice option for a darker beer that drinks light.

Like Shiner, but bitter

Pours a clear mahogany with a thin light tan head. Aromas of toasted bread and licorice. Taste begins with molasses, then some grain husk, finishing with some plums and earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is rich. Overall a good schwarzbier.

Rahr & Sons "Ugly Pug"
on tap at The Buckhorn Saloon, San Antonio, TX
$8 for 20 oz.

Appearance: Very dark brown-black body beneath a creamy head of khaki froth. Decent initial lacing.

Aroma: Chocolate and soft roast like cold dark coffee.

Flavor: Malty. Chocolate fudge. Moderate balancing bitterness. Background grassy/leafy hops. Smooth chocolate in the finish. Perhaps a bit too chocolatey for a schwarzbier, but good in its own right.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth.

Overall: Tasty. Quite good. There's enough to keep you interested without really going beyond basics. Nice.

My initial impression was that this beer was very light bodied, almost watery. But the carbonation gave it a spicy affect. Dark brown, with a light disappearing head. A bit bitter aftertaste, not my favorite

Bottle from Kroger.

Dark brown with a thin, tab head that falls off quickly leaving little lacing, this looks solid. The nose is a blend of roasted grain, chicory, a little coffee and a faint noble hop character. The palate opens thin, spritzy with mild burnt sugar, roasted malt and some grain. A little too thin for my liking, this beer finishes dry with a carbonation that scrubs the palate a little too much. Solid.

Look: Black, mostly opaque with moderate head that dissipates quickly

Smell: Coffee, chocolate aroma

Taste: For me, it was a little sweet and very subdued. It lacked the full-mouth punch that I expected from a dark lager. The flavor left my mouth shortly after consumption.

Feel: Watery, slightly malty

Overall: I'm relatively dissatisfied after drinking this one. I expected more of a stout flavor. Maybe that's just psychological because it's black. Overall, this beer is forgettable.
