Pours a 1 1/2 finger head with good retention and a nice black color.

Coffee dominates the nose and overpowers the other smells that are underneath. Chocolate malt and toffee come out as well, but are masked. Nevertheless, the smell is very enticing.

Man, I was a little disappointed on the first sip. I have had threads stating why I think mouthfeel sometimes takes away from flavor. In this case it does. Sort of minty flavors upfront that fall short and leave little excitement to the tongue upfront. After that, Chocolate sweetness and coffee comes out, which is very nice, it's just that initial sweetness is dull and unexciting and the mouthfeel leaves a lot to be desired. As the beer wamrs, the beer does even out quite a bit, but it still falls a little bit short.

Mouthfeel is described above. It's overly watery on the finish and ruines the beer.

This beer has a lot of potential, but it lacks fullness on the palate and needs a little tweaking. Howver, I could still have a couple of these. The mouthfeel is a total buzzkill.

Reviewed 3/13/2009 (Bottle):

Pours a dark brown black color body, with a tannish, creamy looking head, okay sized and somewhat lasting. Dark roasty malty aroma, some coffee. A little skunkiness. Some fruitiness too. Enticing. Creamy mouthfeel, light fruitiness, like a hefe, some banana. Not as stouty as I was expecting. Very tasty.

Twist off standard brown bottle with no real useful label information. Thanks to HardTarget for the chance to sample this Texas goodie...

Aroma: Dark roasted grains, a touch of carmel, some yeastiness, and a hint of esters that conjure up images of plums and raisins.

Appearance: Crystal clear ruby colored pour with a pillowy white head that disappates and collars the glass.

Flavor: Balance of carmel sweetness with bitterness asserting itself towards the middle lending to notes of black patent and chocolate. Rye bread notes on the finish and no hop presence to speak of.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and appropriate given the style. Lively carbonation with a crisp finish.

Overall impression: Highly sessionable. Kind of 1 dimensional. Would benefit from some increased malt complexity but overall a very nice take on the style. Recommended.

Presentation: 12 oz longneck, label fittingly has a very ugly pug with an eyepatch. No date.

Appearance: Pours black, but looks a dark ruby when held to the light. Thin head fades to almost no lace.

Smell: A light roasted aroma, mainly clean malt.

Taste: Nice medium to thin body, just a hint of roasted aroma, solid malt backbone.

Overall impression: Nice and drinkable - nothing overly exciting, but a solid beer.

12oz. bottle compliments of MUSHROOMCLOUD.

Pours a clear dark chestnut brown - not quite black. Has a very thin head that fades. Spotty lacing.

Aroma is very light. Some roasted and caramel malt aroma with just a hint of chocolate. It has a porter-like aroma, but very clean and crisp.

Taste matches the aroma. Very light flavor of roasted malts with some caramel and chocolate. Very clean and dry.

Body is thin, light carbonation.

Very drinkable with a nice taste. Could use just a bit more body.

Pours a clear mahogany with a thin light tan head. Aromas of toasted bread and licorice. Taste begins with molasses, then some grain husk, finishing with some plums and earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is rich. Overall a good schwarzbier.

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Deep dark brown with a nice beige head and decent lacing. Smells of sweet dark toast which carries over to the taste. A bit of chocolate and a hint of coffee. A nice beer!

Pours a dark brown mahogany color with a short tan head that fades into a creamy lace. Nose is dominated by roasted coffee beans with some fainter notes of dark cherries in the background. Taste begins with roasted malts and fresh espresso followed by notes of bitter burnt coffee and spicy hops. The bitterness remains in a lingering aftertaste. A pretty interesting beer and another winner from the boys in Fort Worth.

A: Black with ruby highlights and a thin soapy head.

S: Sweet roasted malt and coffee aromas.

T: Initial taste is a sweet roasted coffee and chocolate flavor. There are some floral notes from a very slight touch of hops. It finishes sweet with a chocolate aftertaste.

M: It is very light in body with low carbonation, maybe watery, but I kind of like it.

D: The light body of the beer and the great flavors make this a very, very good session beer. Especially in these winter months.
