I picked this one up at Spec's on Jones road here in Houston. It was a new release.

Appearance: Pours a very clear yellow golden color with a 1/2" head of mixed size white bubbles. The head fell within about 30 seconds to a small ring around the top of the beer. There are very few bubbles rising, so the head is virtually gone after the pour.

Aroma: There is a very sweet malty and grainy aroma to this beer. I get lots of toasty malts with a very subtle floral hop presence.

Taste: The flavor is really malty with a very noticeable sweet balance. There is some hops here, but the contribution to the balance is really reserved. You can pick up Vienna malts along with a bit of Pilsner and Carapils. There is a very faint minerally presence which seems a tad out of place, and the hops accent this fact. The finish is firmly balanced toward the malt and doesn’t show the alcohol that this beer actually has in it.

Opinion: This is a pretty good beer. I definitely think that it is the best so far to come out of the Rahr brewery. I am always shy of anything that has the words "Bock" and "Texas" on the same label, as this is normally a bastardization of an American Dark Lager at best. This beer actually fits the bill of a Maibock. I personally think that the mash was a little short on this brew as it has a bit of a bite that can be mashed out, but still it is a drinkable beer that is to style. I would try this one again.

12 oz. bottle tried 29 Feb 2008.

Pours with a medium sized foamy light tan head. Clear golden amber color. Aroma is malty sweet with a bit of salty sweet popcorn. Flavor is light, slightly sweet, somewhat mineraly. Slight hint of sweet lemon in the finish. Light body. Alcohol seems less than 8%.

Really want to like Rahr better than I do, but always seem like a little something is missing.

A - nearly transparent golden yellow, swift carbonation streams feed a thin golden tinged white head

S - malts dominate, but not the roasted variety, honestly it smells like an american macro lager, not a BMC macro, but like a macro style minus the adjuncts

T - malty, rich flavorful malts, again not the roasted kind, not that i expected tham to appear in the taste, no real adjoining or accompanying flavors, not a bad flavor, just not very complex

M&D - easily drinkable, my girlfriend loved it, actually stole my glass, easy down and very smooth, just not complex, a nice session bock

This is from the older stock when it was 7.5%.

Pours a dark honey with a foamy, thin head. Head dispates quickly. Smells extremely sweet, grainy, and malty. Not terribly impressed. Pleasant malt and grain in the taste with hints of honey and, I think, white grapes. Mouthfeel is slightly dense from the alcohol and not overly carbonated. Drinkability is decent.

A hazy golden with a touch of amber. Smells of clean malt, a hint of alcohol and a hint of diaycytal. Taste is rich and malty, clean middle, and a hint of bitterness in the finish. This is a malt oriented beer that is quite pale, somewhat rare to find. Mouthfeel is rich, slightly high carbonation. Good drinkability, I did not realize it was 7.5 percent ABV until I went to review the beer, the alcohol is nearly undetectable. I would get this again.

Pours a clear golden amber color with a fizzy white head that soon vanishes completely. Nose is sweet grain up front with some fainter notes of herbal hops in the background. Taste is lightly toasted malty caramel sweetness followed by a touch of tart fruit and finally an herbal hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden. Crisp and easy-drinking.

Pours a golden color with fluffy white head. There are white chunks floating in the beer. Smells like sweet honey malt and a little alcohol. There is also a slight barnyard odor. A sweet malt, buttery flavor and a little bitterness in the finish. The flavors are not very strong. There is a wild yeast flavor in the background. Definitely tastes better than it smells. The beer is watery and thin. Drinkability is ok.

Citric and malty, spicy and sweet, it smells good.

Yellow/orange tangerine color, pretty good clarity, minimal head.

Great citric hop edge to the attack, followed closely by a rich malt character that balances the tartness with a soft sweetness and layers of malt flavor (nutty, buttery, somewhat toasty). Finishes clean. Body is of medium to medium-thin thickness and more carbonated than smooth.

Superb brew! I love it.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener

L: orange ... kind of cool, a pale, light murky orange; small light white head of 1/8 to 1/4-inch foam that disipates quickly; slight lacing

S: weak grain with sliver of malt sweetness on top that adds a bit of character; hints of hops (citrusy) but mostly weak grain with the good malt

T: first sip is perfect, great sweetness with a slight spicy hop bite; it devolves quickly into the medicinal taste i keep finding in bocks, though it's not undrinkable or offensive; the hops often bite up front and there's an occasional note of grain, though the malt helps sweeten the finish nicely; a few citrus notes

F: crisp, clean, moderate carbonation for a solid midweight brew

O: not bad at all, not necessarily an award winner -- about 1/2 in the toasted barley sweetness really makes this beer a solid serving from beginning to end. it's good enough that I'll definitely try it some more and look for it when it first comes out next season. one of Rahr's better offerings.

Poured into a pint glass. Hazy golden color with a white, minimal head that doesn't leave lacing. Nose of grain and weak hops. Taste follows the nose with sweet grain, a touch sweetness, and finish of hops. More taste than the nose hints at. Medium bodied and medium carbonation with a clean finish.
This doesn't really stand out, but it's enjoyable and goes down pretty well. Alcohol is well hidden and is a nice bonus. The hops are understated but probably the best part of it.
