2015 Release
Pours a lovely deep, reddish brown with 1fb of light khaki head with good retention. Smells of vanilla, wood, bourbon, dark fruits. Tastes is sweet malts forward, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla and bourbon notes, balanced by hops and ending with a clean finish. Medium bodied with fair amount of effervescence keep the sweet malts from becoming syrupy. Some bourbon notes linger.

Overall, well balanced – all the features of a strong dark ale with the bourbon notes. I really enjoyed this brew.

When it's winter time and the cold wind is howling, and you are surrounded by good friends, there are only a few brews you can choose from if you want an epic one. This is one of them. This year's batch used Jim Beam barrels and it is wonderful. Strong, warming, and delicious. This brew is a must try and you'll find yourself saving some for aging, which I highly recommend.

A - pours rich, deep brown, almost black, ruby highlights show when held up to light. 1 finger of tan head that quickly recedes to a standard foam ring. Looks very close to a stout

S - Bourbon up front, dtrong oak notes, slight vanilla, sweet chocolate, hint of molasses, more warm bourbon, sweet potatoe, slight creamy smell

T - Whiskey and chocolate blend, spicy wooden characterweet dark malts, mild alcohol flavor, slight coffee bitterness. Imagina a stout but replace the bitter roasted character with a strong whisky note. Slight coconut, very faint maple, creamy coffee, whisky all over

M - Thick and creamy, carbonation tends more towards the creamy than the fizzy. Lends to an over all creamy beer experience. Very enjoyable and smooth

O - Delicious and strong. Flavorful, packed with all sorts of smell and taste, the kind of beer that keeps you interested, and develops as it warms. An all day drinker for sure.

Rahr's offering pours thinly into a Boulevard tulip, seemingly black until placed in light, when its deep caramel color can be appreciated. Its fine foamy head dissipates a little quicker than I would've liked, with average lacing and retention along the glass.

Nutmeg, caramel, and cinnamon contribute to the nose, though alcohol is pretty obviously perceptible. Given its mild 8.5% ABV, I would attribute this mainly to its immaturity, only spending 10 weeks in bourbon casks.

The alcohol is much more well blended into the taste, with spice, coffee, chocolate, and smoke giving way to a sweeter, lightly malted finish. Mouthfeel is a little thin, though, and the finishing notes don't linger as much as I would like.

I think this beer has a lot of room to grow, and I'll be keeping a couple of bombers to enjoy in the next several months.
