Custer’s Last Stout is a Foreign-Style stout. It has an initial malt sweetness and chocolate flavor with a dry roasted bitterness finish. It is brewed with English malted barley and domestic Fuggle hops. This variety of hop adds a slight herbal (licorice) aroma and flavor to our stout. Foreign-Style stouts originated when English breweries added more hops and alcohol to their classic dry stouts as a natural preservative. They did this so the beer would survive the long journey to their far reaching empire around the world.

The beer was inky black, with no lacing, and a skimpy ring of foam. The beer was poorly carbonated. Only roasted malt in the nose.
The beer was exceptionaly clean and I was reminded that stouts can be quite refreshing. The beer presented subtle roasted malt flavors (most likely just one type). Then, the taste vanished quicker then Custer losing his battalions of troops during his last stand. I catagorized the stout as dry, but it won the GABF in 2004 in the export catagory. Still, I Iike stouts with more body.

Clear, very dark chestnut brown look. Faint, charred grain nose. Light but pretty good, medium heavy toasted grain flavor and finishes that way.

This was poured into a 10 oz pint glass. The appearance was a nice looking dark brown close to black color with a bar pour’s kind of slim white to off white foamy head that dissipated evenly to allow a decent lacing roaming about. The smell had a thick rich roasted cocoa bean to slight coffee rich indulgent glossed over cakey-ness. The taste was pretty much exactly the same and covered a big cakey rich chocolate into the aftertaste. Semi-dry finish came across nicely. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a rich chocolatey roastiness rolling over my tongue, indulgent - definitely. Semi-sipper to somewhat of a drinker allowed me to be quite pleased. Overall, foreign/export stout or American stout, maybe a cross between the two. If anything, I liked it and would have it again.

Per the menu at the brewery:
"Style: Oatmeal Stout
ABV: 5.4% IBU's 30"
Poured a deep black into my pint glass at the Montana Brewing Company in Billings, Montana.
Very nice appearance. Nice head, decent lace. Aroma is full of coffee and chocolate notes.
The taste is the same. A very good Oatmeal Stout.
Far and away the better of the two styles I tried at the brewery and would seek this out again whenever I have the chance.

A: Pours a dark brown. Almost opaque. A two finger tan head forms, and recedes to leave some sticky lace behind.
S: A huge roasted malt. Chocolate, sweet toffee, and light coffee flavors. More complexities come out as it warms up. Like a very interesting peppermint aroma.
T: At first, the flavor is very muted. Though as it warms up, more and more flavors come out. Rich roasted malt. Chocolate and toffee again. Very nice.
M/D: A medium to full body and low on the carbonation end. Very creamy and smooth. Easy to drink. I don't know the alcohol, but this is very drinkable.
A great stout. Get some if you are ever at the brewpub.
