They stated it will not be sold to on sale accounts.

No threats were made by distributors California at all.

Not true at all. There was some delivered this past week to So Cal. I am willing to bet that retailers who violated the Weatvleteren agreement didn't get any and maybe never will.

I will say this - a local shop I know sold the Westy XII packs for $130+ (much to the embarrassment of the 'beer person' there - but as required by the owner) and still got the Cantillon Fou' Foune recently. Take that fact for what it's worth.

Smaller bottle shops charge more because they don't have the sales volume of a large store. I don't mind paying a bit more at the right places because they get some cool shit that I never see at larger shops.

I sold a bottle of Westy for a sixth of the cost of a brick at retail. does that make me a bad person?

It doesn't help anyone if you don't name the shop.

Yes it does. I don't mind paying more if its a small shop. But price gouging that bad? You might as well hold me by the ankles and shake me for money. It makes you a bad person as a fair retailer and it makes an awful person when you take the monks into account.

What? He said he sold one bottle (out of 6) for one sixth of the cost of the brick...setting aside the monks' request to not break up the bricks, how is that price gouging?

Shit. Nevermind. I misread the post. I thought he sold it for the cost of 1 brick. Forgive my uncalled for criticism SHODriver. I still don't think you should've broken up the brick to sell, but you didn't price gouge.

How do the Belgian retailers, like Belgiuminabox, get away with selling singles and bricks at prices higher than "retail?" There were a handful of sites that were selling the bricks which have been for sale in Belgium for quite a while.

I don't know if it matters, but the Westys I have from Belgium don't have writing on the bottle at all, only the cap. I am not sure they were ever part of a brick, I would guess not.

Yeah, I was asking more about the fundamental "breaking the rules" thing more than the pricing - why don't the monks crack down on their own vendors?

I don't really think it's in the nature of monks to be "enforcers". They just ask nicely that their wishes be respected. You're not really supposed to be able to purchase it away from the monastery from what I understand, but people truck it out and resell it in the major cities of Belgium. I saw it at a couple places in Brussels for 15 and 17 Euros each.

If they wanted to be hard asses they would have contracts with price restrictions and an attorney enforcing them. As it is they seem to have faith that people will not be greedy and will do what they ask, then they go about their lives fixing the roof, praying, and brewing beer. Probably not surfing the web for gossip or prices. It's just not monkish to be upset or bitter about a few jerks selling beer at a huge mark-up.

I was looking into buying one of these last week from BIAB. Probably the only option I'll ever have to try it. After doing the monetary conversion 150 pounds in American money =$227.23 and then shipping is another 80 pounds= $121.30 so $348.53 for one six pack ? I guess it will have to stay in Belgium. Crazy money.

I wonder if at PopcornAdvocate, they ask if anyone wants a beer?
