In a weird way, this exemplifies my thoughts on current craft trends. Having only cursory knowledge and thinking the flashy, expensive cut of meat usually covered with sauce/butter to give it more flavor is superior vs. being a connoisseur and knowing that a well marbeled strip steak will give you more flavor at a much better price . ;-)

This thread is full of great theories. I know an event in Tampa this weekend where we can test those theories.

So basically the definition a "beer snob" is any craft enthusiast who doesn't take the same approach to beer drinking as the "geek" making said definition?
Give me a break. If you ask enough people, it will turn out that we're all "beer snobs."
Maybe we should get over ourselves and realize that throwing labels around accomplishes nothing.

I wouldn't consider myself a beer snob but I've been known to make remarks about how I think BMC is trash. And come on, how can I not roll my eyes when someone orders a 'Bud Heavy'?

When someone tells me that "Mick Ultra" is their favorite beer, yes, I do want to strike them with a piece of heavy mining equiptment. Does that make me a beer snob?... No way.

Now then, would you please pass the Grey Poupon? I would like to enjoy my Fois Gras.

I think it's probably always going to come down to simple enjoyment.

...he says, thus starting a thread all about putting labels on people.

Acceptable wants-to-gots ratio for following activities:

session: 1.0 or greater (for beers that fall under 1.0 threshold, but are 95 or higher ba score, use following formula:
    (wants/gots)*(Score/25+(hype(out of 10)*.1)

    i.e founders breakfast (787/1519) * (100/25 + (8*.1)) = 2.5 = acceptable session beer

tasting event: 2.0 or high, absolutely nothing with more gots than wants

whale slaying: typically 5.0 or high, but several variables need to be considering like obscurity, total # of bottles released, region of relase, style of beer, etc. 'I cant define what is a whale, but I know it when I see it'

You shouldn't be upset with people who buy lots of "rare" beer. You should be upset and complain to breweries that don't make much of something even though they know lots of people want it to me thats the dick move

My favorite post in here so far. I find this whole thread to be a tad bit pretentious so I haven't felt the need to say which one I am. Honestly, you can be a beer geek and still be a snob at the same time. Everyone is guilty of it. I myself was just torn apart this week for writing a thread criticizing ABI. I had my humble pie, and learned from it.

I find a sixer of Gumballhead to be extremely quaffable

Don't think I didn't look that up first

So I am a snob because I honestly think Guinness (draught? I am assuming) is a watery tasting poor example of a stout (specifically an Irish dry stout)? Thanks for letting me know. I could comment on how you found it necessary to say I've tried over X amount of beers but I won't....

edit: quaffable = able to be quaffed :stuck_out_tongue:

Geeks care more about the progression of good beer. Snobs can't see the beauty in something like a great German lager and only think good beer is the beer they like.

Regardless, there is too much BAD beer out there.
