All titles are made up at some point. Titles tend to stick and are widely used because they are accurate descriptors. At this point beer geek is widely used and is an accurate descriptor.

Those who dont appreciate good beer call me a snob and those who do call me a geek. On that note I dont think "beer snob" is not eloquent ehough, I preferr the term "artesional micro craft brew connoissours." :grinning:

Yes, but some titles are appropriate and some titles just sound pretentious and unnecessary. Beer geek I believe is the latter. Just saying something like "I"m a fan of good beer" has such a more positive connotation, at least to me.

Man, for someone with a rather childlike and whimsical avatar, you sure take trivial titles rather seriously.

Opinions are bound to differ but calling yourself a geek seems more self-deprecating than pretentious.

I jokingly call myself a "beer geek in training." By today's standards, geek just refers to somebody who is way more into something, usually a subculture of some type, than mainstream society. While craft/microbrewery beer is fairly mainstream anymore, there is definitely a level of geekery that one can assume. A non-beer geek can like craft beer, enjoy going to breweries/beer bars, but they don't give it much thought. A beer geek is concerned about appropriate glassware for maximum appreciation, they know about limited releases of beers that they're across the country from and they're jealous, they know the histories and characteristics of many styles, etc. I'd say most BA's are beer geeks.

I call myself a beer geek in training because I'm nowhere near the level of tasting, reviewing, whale hunting, etc. I haven't tried nearly as many beers as most BA's have. But I definitely have an above-average interest in beer than the average American beer consumer, I would say.

Edited to add..."beer geek" seems like a more, humble self-deprecating, but still proud way of implying somebody who is really into good beer. I would NEVER call myself a beer connoisseur or something.

While I may have agreed with you a few years ago, I've heard too many people say it like it is some sort of badge of honor. As a disclaimer I should probably note that I really don't like most people.
    But Polandball is awesome.

I am a beer dork and a Gueze hound. Proud of it too. Geek is not strong enough word to describe Tender's level of obsession.

Yes, and gladly so. Even if I didn't, other people would, so I'm cool with it. Frankly, I've been called much worse.

    I have a beer affliction.

I do refer to myself as a foodie though. That paints a perfectly clear picture of my diet/lifestyle

That dosen't make you a snob. I'm not a snob and feel the same way. I have a lot of BMC drinking friends. They enjoy their beer as much as i enjoy mine. live and let live

well, since I got into the hobby early 90's the label 'snob' came along with the kind refusal of BMC because I only wanted micros, as they were called then. "Oh, so you're a beer snob, huh."

I think this is a more commonplace and less offensive meaning of 'snob'.
