This is why I'm more snob than geek.

I always refer to myself as a beer geek. It is funny way to say you are not a beer snob.

I usually refer to myself as a "BEER NERD" "HOP HEAD"

Never thought about the psychology of why, but those are the terms I use.

What do you use to define yourself, or are you one of those who considers themselves exactly like everyone else, so you just consider yourself as devoid of definition.

According to Descartes, and I agree, all we have to define ourselves are our thoughts. And I prefer to think of myself in terms of the thoughts that bring me pleasure. Since you make a deal of not defining yourself that way, and throw pejoratives at those who do, perhaps you now would like to say what it is you use?

In the UK there's a fairly crude but very funny comic called Viz. They have an irregular strip titled The Real Ale Twats which basically rips into beer bores.

The characters go around referring to themselves as Casketeers.

No, I'm a Beer Snob and proud of it!!! As I've gotten older I've gotten particular about the beer I will drink. When I was young and foolish it was about quantity, now it's all about quality!

I guess I didn't explain myself well. I don't use anything as I don't feel the need to define myself at all. I like to think that I am ever changing and ever evolving. And no, I don't think I'm the same as everyone else, I just don't have the compulsion to proclaim the ways that I am different to the world. I get that a lot of you take great pleasure in being "different", I just don't find it necessary to proclaim and revel in my differences.

But really though, if beer is even in the top 5 things in your thoughts that are important to you/give you pleasure, then you really are a beer dork I suppose. I just can't fathom how it could be that important to anyone who doesn't brew for a living. I guess that level of beer geekdom is just inconceivable to me. Go ahead and keep labeling yourselves as "beer geeks", I don't care. I just will never say it about myself.

For the reputation of the beer community I wish people were more humble and genuine about their beer choices. I hate talking to "snobs" who have similar taste in beers but start condemning beers (probably ones that they loved at one point in the craft scene) and giving praise to only a few. Geek seems less pretentious but personally referring to yourself as some specific brand of beer lover seems trite because there's no actual scale that determines what level you are. I'm a level 34 Beer Paladin... So I urge everyone to approach beer conversations with a bit more humility while encouraging and appreciating the "craft" that we love, which is beer.

Well, this is a great response, unlike so many I read, but I think that if your judgement is that answering a question on a forum is proclaiming oneself to be something, than I think you just did exactly what you say others shouldn't, the individualist who rejects definition in a world of egocentricity:slight_smile:

Haha, seriously though, thinking of oneself as being one way or another is different than carrying a sandwich board with "I am a beer geek, amateur mycologist, and classical music lover", as mine would read if I did other than think of myself in terms like those. And of course our enjoyments are ever changing, as are our ages and the attitudes that come with spending more time on planet. I do think of homebrewing and enjoying beer a lot, because it is an enjoyment that I cherish, and a pastime I practice as often as possible, just as I do the other two things I mentioned, and many, many others to varyingly lesser degrees.

Beer Dork hmmm. I could live with that.

Haha The rugged individualist, cold objective view, or, to be precise, the rebel without a clue. JK, Cheers!

I used to joke about having a microwave installed behind the bar for the specific purpose of warming a beer to its right temperature.
Reading your post, Now I think it might be worth a try to request a glass straight from the dishwasher while it's still warm to the touch for the very same purpose.

Indeed. A friend introduced me to some of his friends as such, and now I'm starting to think it wasn't meant as a kindly term...
