Shouldn't we all hate bad beer? I don't mean stuff like AALs. I mean any random BA beer that shouldn't exist due to low quality and especially for $15 a bottle.

I more meant that snobs are more caught up in putting down "bad" beer than they are in enjoying a good shelf beer. They are the negative Nancy's of the beer world. I hate (too strong of a word) bud lite, but I am going to spend exactly 0% of my time telling other people about it unless specifically asked for an opinion. Even then I'd probably phrase my thoughts on BL as "I usually prefer hoppier/darker/maltier/stronger/whatever else beers." Although now I feel like a snob for this post. FML

This is perfect. When I think of a geek (and I'm counting myself in this) it's somebody who is so excited by the subject (beer or whatever) that they just want to have a discussion about it with anyone willing to listen. Snobs would rather give a lecture than have an actual conversation.

Is it snobbery or geekiness if I get pissed off when I order a craft beer in a restaurant and the beer arrives without a glass? Happened with an Allagash white recently.

What about sending back a bottle if you find that the bottle or can date is too old( for a pale ale or IPA)? Haven't gotten to that stage yet:slight_smile:

Comic beer geekiness: looking for out of date IPAs in a beer store for a laugh. Really. I don't do that-

Some people think the term "geek" is derogatory in any context. Other people romanticize the term "geek" as a special quality in any context. The same goes for "snob". Ok, fine.

If you are really into beer, you are a beer enthusiast who may or may not be a "geek" or a "snob" who is really into beer. Got that? Good!

    :grimacing:

We are all beer enthusiasts !!!!

Wow good job overreacting. Way to misinterpret. Guinness is just an example, if you don't like Guinness to each his own. Are you jealous I've tried over 1,000 beers? Strange.

I think I would tend to consider myself a 'beer geek", but in "my opinion."

Geek = Likelihood to recommend a beer ("you should try X beer, I really like it.")

Snob = Likelihood to discourage you from trying a beer ("Don't drink that X beer it's awful.")

That's not overreacting. I drank Guinness many times in Ireland in 1980. Today's Guinness is a shadow of its former self. It's not brewed only in Ireland anymore. I'd rather drink something else.

Please tell this to breweries that don't make enough of a popular beer. Much as I love Founders CBS and FFF Dark Lord the brewers piss me off for not making enough. I don't buy the whole we can't increase production even if we wanted to if GI can make BCBS available year round why can't either of these be made available like that specially Dark Lord which isn't barrel aged in maple syrup barrels.

Have people really met that many "beer snobs?" I've met a few geeks with questionable social skills but very few, if any, outright snobs. I've found that the vast majority of good beer enthusiasts are eager to encourage others' explorations, and have yet to meet anyone who has shown disdain for those less knowledgeable.

While I agree with this, beer is very caloric (spelling?), and people who don't want empty calories might not want to waste some calories, may choose not to drink bad beer.

That said, if I am with people drinking beer, I will drink whatever beer we have, wheather it is good or bad beer.

I love this. I have a friend who "loves beer", but only really hoppy beers (mostly DIPAs) or Russian Imperial Stouts. He basically won't drink a lager. I tell him he doesn't like beer, he likes hops and Russian Imperials. He says he "likes flavor," as if subtler beer styles don't have flavor. I think he ruined his tastebuds eating too much spicy food.

Not really, mostly see the snobs online posting about how they drain poured their skunked Pliny because it was 3 days old or something.

The snob lectures everyone within earshot at great length on the need for and properties of proper head retention.

The geek just bites the head off.

Geeking out on something means it's kind of like a hobby. Being a snob is a way of life. When's the last time you met a beer snob who wasn't a prick about almost everything else as well?

Do not mistake geek for nerd my friend:wink: A beer geek lives by the credo "Fear no Beer"...where as a beer snob fears all beer made by the the salesman, instead of the neighborman.
