    The outrage seems about right. My patented formula proves it!

    OR = OP x [{(MD x I) + SSR} + KBWF]

    OR = Outrage
    OP = Outrageous pricing
    MD= Moral dubiousness
    I = Internet
    SSR = Sense of self-righteousness
    KBWF = Keyboard Warrior Factor

    P.S You really should join in though. Outrage is a fabulous emotion.

    I just don't really see anything to be outraged about.
    I'm not willing to pay that amount for a beer so I won't. Someone else is? Good for them.

    As for the whole "Against the monks wishes" business, I see it as a little hypocritical. How many people have had grey market beers that are in Australia against the brewers wishes?

    No doubt.

    I would be surprised that any place that wanted to sell Westy 12 for $99 would be the least bit interested in any wishes other than that of the owner.

    Grey market beers are bad news - lets not go there. Grey market beers are normally stale by the time they get to us. I find eve legit beers are hard to gauge the quality of (I only like my beers fresh - very sensitive to oxidation). I hope the Quarie knows who picked it up from Westvleteren and how it got to their door, because "beers that age well" shouldn't be mistaken with "can withstand all manner of mistreatment".

    Not really what I was trying to say.

    They imported a single mixed carton, which is why the price is what it is. Freight and import duties/taxes aren't going to help. If they were bringing in pallets of the stuff and charging the same amount it would be a different kettle of fish.

    Fact is, that it's selling pretty fast so good for them.

    Gosh darnit, holy shit I'm surprised! Who would've thunk that you would in fact be someone who knows the owners of the bar in question! Thanks for clearing that up though on their behalf. Yet another example of inbred commentary within the Australian beer scene.

    I know quite a few people in the industry, does that mean I'm not allowed to comment?

    I was objecting to your move of "come in and smugly try to undermine the discourse without declaring your bias"

    Obviously you know them, good for you, next time say that from the start before giving your defence of them. Your second post in the thread was clearly extremely disingenuous ("uh...guys...I don't see anything wrong here!").

    welcome to beerdissident.com everybody :slight_smile:

    don't worry LexP, you've said nothing wrong. Sometimes there's a bit of self-appointed policeman heavying on the aust forum. For what it's worth, i think they're all nice people, just sometimes outspoken to a fault.

    Heck i was once chastised by someone for advertising my beer tasting on here - the admonishment came from someone who advertised their own beer tasting a few months later. How did the barleywine festival go by the way?

    I think $99 westys are overpriced AND i think the quarie manager is a top bloke. Is that allowed?

    Im curious to know the margin. I think itd be smaller than i first thought. If doing this 100% legit, a cost of $45 (purchase + delivery + insurance) incurs about $6 duty and GST. but that is for personal consumption only. There are a different set of regulations for bringing beer into aust with the intent to sell. Id love to know what those costs are... Anyone have an idea?

    Undermine the discourse by stating my opinion? Apologies for having a different opinion to the majority of the thread. I don't have to justify myself to you.

    No idea on any of the costs involved.

    EBay is/was hardly the cheapest place to purchase beer, but most times a 6 pack of Westy 12 appeared it was about $180 landed. Customs wouldn't be able to tell of the use, so duty most likely wouldn't apply.

    If the manager got it direct from the brewery the margin is even more grotesque.

    Assuming they bought a carton via a secondary market, the price would be even cheaper.

    Wasn't trying to speak for you, all comments I make are my own.

    Im a bit ignorant of Trolling, but is this what The Quarie has done with the availabilty of Westy at this price? Got everyone up in arms and talking about it all....

    I believe highlighting the bar was perhaps the biggest objective of this venture. Some people may object at the method, I don't really care personally. At least someone is willing to do something different.

    If they sold the beer without paying the duty they would be up for either paying the duty if found out, hefty fines, or losing their liquor license.

    This is not something I would expect they would do. I have heard of some places flaunting it, but when bringing something in to sell you make sure you pay the duty on it.

    Who wants to risk a liquor license for a couple of bottles of beer :/

    I can't see how he got it direct from the Monks from here. Best bet is that he paid belgiuminabox.

    And then some prices are pretty reasonable. Like the 750 "Lou Pepe" for $29. Strange.

    Ashamed for asking questions? Some have been forthright, some have been probing, some a little rude. Using a catch all isn't fair now, is it. Is Mr Perthbelgianbeers despicable for asking for clarification and Lukie despicable for offering context and information? Mr Spicelab and myself for offering playful jibes? How did you reach your value judgement of us? Was it worth our remarks? Will we all pay the price? I'm sure there's a metaphor and/or analogy here. I just can't place my finger on it. Silly me.
