Just witnessed a guy ask what the "real ale" was. I knew what he was asking but the bartender did not. Finally the beer snob yelled at the bartender that it was the one on cask. What an ass!! Most would have just asked " What's on cask?" Right? I made sure to make te bartender feel better tht I didn't know what he was talking about either. I got a free pour too. You just don't hear that term anymore. Do you??

I'm likened to Beer Geek because I have the same mindset regarding horror films, video games, and technology as I do with beer. I want to search out and find what others like, try everything I can, make trips and spend crazy money just to satisfy my needs. I catalog and rate my beers the same I do the films I watch. I often get called a snob just because I don't care to waste my money on beer that I don't care to drink. Would rather make picks and drink at home.

Never once have I let a rating dictate what beer I drink and don't drink. I don't get those who are like that.

    Cheers

Beer geeks share their beers and experiences with good beers with others they meet at parties. Beer snobs ask people what kind of beer they drink and if an American Adjunct Lager is offered up as a response, then a smirk is shot back as the beer snob proudly takes a swig from a bottle of an overrated brewery.

I have to say that lately I am enjoying those nano brew pubs that make solid beer. Many not even on this site.

I agree with so many of these and others points but just because you share your opinion about a beer doesn't mean you are a snob. I'm not going to tell some one that ranger is a good IPA. I think that its way to skewed but you can tell who's a douche bag, no matter if he loves miller light or thinks dark lord is complete shit.

Beer snobs = condescending that you haven't found "that next best thing" like them.

Beer geeks = love that you appreciate the craft biz for what it is and are happy that you're willing to try new/different beers.

Beer geeks are inclusive. Beer snobs are exclusive.

And regarding turning down a beer you don't like -- you're not a snob for turning down a beer, you're a snob for turning up your nose. Big difference.

It's not rocket science -- be generous, respectful, tactful, and friendly. I find that at least 75% of craft beer lovers understand and practice this. But there are pricks and snobs in every walk, the beer world is not immune.

I dont get the "if you won't drink x,y,z then you don't like beer." If someone said they liked mainy fantasy and historical novels, would you come back at them and say "well if you don't read mystery novels, you don't really like books." Or the argument that you should drink something you won't enjoy cause its free. Seems a bit silly.

I love craft beer with a passion but, if I'm at a cookout or event and all they have is Heineken. I won't complain. I'm knock down some Heineken!
