I wonder if some local breweries are trying to tell NB to stay off their turf.....

That would be damn silly considering NB products have been availible at every supermarket and gas station in Asheville for many years at this point... In fact, they've been on that turf longer than a few of the local brewers have.
Likely this was the work of someone who knew these structures were about to be torn down anyway. Those lots have always been a place that tweakers and whores like to hang out.

I didn't even read the article. I guess I need to start noting when I'm joking in my posts, though I had serious doubt when posting that someone would honestly think I would be implicating another brewery in arson.

Doesn't it say NB was going to deconstruct and reuse the wood somehow from those buildings?

Edit: and where were you last night?

There were a couple brewers that expressed enough displeasure about having NB in town to put the idea into the realm of possibility. I'm positive that in Asheville there's been serious statements thrown around much like the one you made in a joking manner, and it wouldn't be a complete surprise to me if it ended up being true given the good-ol-boy nature of that town.
So yeah, I didn't realize you were joking.

Are you talking about Ashevile, NC? Good-ol-boy?

You don't even have to read the article, the headline says it's the 4th fire set in that area this week. Maybe your mad brewer is engaging in serial arson?

Yes, Asheville is very good-ol-boy. It may not be evident on the surface, but it is. The population of transplants that create the arstsy, hip vibe can be decieving, but the true locals whose family's have been there for generations are self-policing good-ol-boys and many of the brewers in town fall directly into that catagory.
Think about what Asheville was before it became hip... A coalmining and railroad town loaded with moonshiners. It was a rough mountain town and that pedigree remains. Those four fires btw, were all located on the NB property I believe. Moved from Asheville several months ago so my geography might be a bit fuzzy but I'm pretty sure all four lie on the site of the the defunct stockyard they bought.
But again, I'm not suggesting a rogue brewer set these fires, as I said above it was likely a tweaker or some gutterpunks or something, but at the same time I wouldn't be completely flabbergasted to hear otherwise as there is a circle of folks who were furiously angered by the prospect of having big-bad NB in their town.

I'm sure they were insured and will be reimbursed quite nicely. Now they can start fresh and save the cost of renovation. I'm guessing nobody at NB is crying too much unless they had already started to move stuff in. On a serious note: I'm sure they could sell the burnt wood to Rogue for some half-assed new Arson Smoked Alt Beer recipe. Put it in pink bottles, it will sell!

From reading the article (novel concept, I guess), it sounds as if there's a serious problem in that city right now. Numerous arsons in a very short time frame? I wouldn't be surprised if it did end up being drug-related somehow, but maybe there's also just somebody out there who isn't mentally stable and this is how it's being physically manifested.

As for New Belgium, it sounds like it won't be a major loss from a strictly business perspective. It sucks that they'd been planning on salvaging old items and will now have to go for new ones instead, as it's always nice to see a brewery re-use things when possible. But the article makes it seem like their move won't be as heavily impacted by this as I would have thought.

Does anyone have any info on some local brewers not being too happy about NB opening there and how do they feel about the other big boys coming to town? Is there an article around discussing this?

I am also sure that NB's insurance premiums will go up quite nicely. I'm not saying that you disagree, but I don't think this was a positive event for NB by any definition.

And yes, Voodoo Donut sucked out loud.

I live about 15 minutes out of Asheville and I haven't read about anything but excitement for NB to be coming to town. In fact they've already participated in a few fundraisers and bike rides in the surrounding area. But I could have overlooked an article or something but all I've heard has been positive.
