I'm having one of those nights where it seems like every beer I try is a dud. It doesn't happen often, thankfully, but it's a bummer to set aside a night to try several new beers only to have one disappointment after another. Tonight it's only been two beers, but they've both been in bombers, which makes it seem more of a waste. The first I only managed to finish a 5 or 6 ounces of before dumping the rest, and while the second is at least drinkable, I have no motivation whatsoever to finish the last half of the bomber. I've had a few nights in the past where I've had 3-4 disappointments and drainpours in a row.

What do you do in these situations? Crack open a beer that you know you like just as an apology to your palate? Or do you count your losses and call it quits for the night?

Personally, i drink it unless it is below a D rating.

    (C average ftw)

If it's a single bottle, I'll usually finish it even if I find it pretty mediocre. With a bomber, though, it's difficult to convince myself to drink another full glass of a beer that I'm indifferent toward.

If I don't have much in the fridge, I'll finish the beer, but if I have some Heady Topper staring me in the eye, I've been known to dump mediocre beers.

When this happens to me, I usually end up just calling it a night because by that point I've had enough (bad) beer that I don't feel like opening yet another one, even if it's something reliable. Some days are just better forgotten.

I've had my share of days like that also. Rather than call it a day, I'll crack one open that I know I always enjoy so I don't walk away frustrated. That stinks, I feel your pain, man!

The first was Obliteration VIII, which smelled great, but then had this really awful taste to it that reminded me of dish soap and Pine Sol (no, I had not just washed my glass wish soap). The second was Rustic Rye, which wasn't bad, but it was far from good, so one glass was more than enough of it.

I think I'm going to count my losses this time. The only thing I have cold that I know I'd enjoy is my last can of Abrasive. I'm a bit hopped out for the night and don't want to spend my last can of the year on a numbed palate.

Go into a rage and smash all the bad bottles against the wall.

Then silently cry as you upload the reviews.

My palate is a little burned on hops right now, fresh Sculpin on tap was a little meh and Gandhi-bot was tasting like a gruit to me as far as hops goes. Guess I need a stout or Belgian run tomorrow then slay them hops again.

I've had severe palate fatigue before when any and all beers just didn't cut it, I slowed way down and drank ice cold Miller Lite's for a few weeks. I went on a heavy Calif IPA kick at XMAS, like 3 cases of bombers big, I was sick of IPA's, no beer sounded really good, so as a token to hanging out at the bar I like I sucked on a simple Miller Lite. Bland kinda watered down, cold, it eventually worked.

I try to severely limit my drain pours. A beer has to be simply awful to get dumped. I pay good money for these beers and just as I would not flush cash down the toilet I don't want to waste beer.

But why suffer thru a really lousy beer your not enjoying just to drink it? The money's already spent, if I hate it out it goes.

Well yeah, that's if you hate it...most beers I am just meh about I drink, but like I said if it is terribly offensive to me it gets dumped.

I've sucked on brews that were new and weren't anything but average, it's disappointing, but not painful. My last drain pour was Wild Devil, I think I managed a sip if I didn't spit it out, and the rest went down the drain. That was a freaking yuck, I wouldn't have finished that bottle for 100 bucks at the bottom.

I've found for me that the first beer almost always has a carry over effect on what I think of the second one, so a new beer I'm trying for the first time will be the first of the evening (if I'm having more than one). Then, as pointed out by a couple of others in earlier posts, I have something I know I like ready to go if I'm having two and the first is a disappointment.
