I'm going to be in San Diego Thursday, May 23- Sunday, May 26. The first night my husband and I are staying in the marina area, but after that we're staying at the Residence Inn San Diego - Sorrento Mesa which will be in good proximity to Alesmith, Ballast Point, Hess, Saint Archer, and whatever else we find. (don't worry, we have many more brew stops on the agenda  )
So the first question I have, is how is the public transportation in this area? Will we be able to get to these places easy enough? Yes, we'll have a rental car but driving isn't the best idea when visiting several beer destinations. Is walking a feasible option?
Secondly, the Champions League final is Saturday at 11:45. Any recommendations for a lunch destination that has an excellent beer list that will be showing the game?
Lastly, to keep the beer geek in me in check, I'm also a runner. (Coming from Denver, I can't wait for the low altitude!) Is this a safe area for a good morning run? Here is a course I mapped out:
    Distance: 10.52 mi
    http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/208460353
Or should I just stay inside?

    THANKS!

I like to run Lake Miramar, one lap is just shy of 5 miles, so you can do a couple laps. Nothing too challenging as far as hills go. Pretty safe as well -- lots of runners/bikers/skaters are there whenever I run. And the lake is a short distance from the Ballast Point tasting room, which in turn is also an exit away from Alesmith.

I sometimes like to do my after-work run at the lake then "re-hydrate" at Alesmith.

    - FYI, Saint Archer's tasting room isn't open yet.
    - Public transport is pretty deplorable there. For some bizarre reason, no matter how short/long your travel, it seems to always take at least 1 hour to get anywhere in SD via bus. I don't understand why. If you want to avoid driving in Mira Mesa you'll probably have to call a taxi or use Uber. Hess and Alesmith are within walking distance of each other but the rest kinda aren't.
    - As ehammond said, O'brien's is 100% perfect for watching a soccer game and drinking from a great taplist.
    - Yup it's safe to run in those areas. Just be aware that Mira Mesa and Miramar are both high-speed 3+ lane roads.

You're probably walkable to Green Flash, but that's about it. Maybe Karl Strauss as well (scenery-wise, it's the nicest place to grab a drink in that area). Public transportation sucks, but you might be able to find a bus toward the breweries on Miramar?

Your run should be fine, but it will be a lot of elevation change (even if it's close to sea level). That region is a lot of canyons, so expect to be going up and down a lot. It won't be the prettiest of runs - I'd suggest driving over toward the beach and running along it, personally. You can park along North Torrey Pines road north of Torrey Pines state park, and either run through the park, along the beach, up through Del Mar and Solana Beach or south through La Jolla.

Penaquitos Canyon and Torrey Pines are both great places to run if you like trails, and fairly close to your hotel. I would highly recommend Torrey Pines.

I'd second O'Brien's for watching the Champions League game. It'd be my top recommendation even if you weren't going to watch soccer.

That area has quite a few Reuben hot spots. To satisfy your Reuben tooth check out these places.

Hi, I live in Mira Mesa.

There is no public transportation worth noting in Mira Mesa. Use your car. There are no cabs here and I rarely see buses.

Green Flash's new brewery is about a mile from your hotel. A new brewery, Wet 'N Reckless Brewing, is also within walking distance. There are others somewhat close, but those are the only one's within (close) walking distance. Alesmith and Hess are very close, but they are in Miramar (the next city over - but still 10 minutes away). Ballast Point is at the east end of Mira Mesa, and close to that is White Labs.
In Mira Mesa you can watch the game at Callahan's (a sports bar/restaurant) that also brews it's own beer. Otherwise, drive. O'Briens is great for watching soccer and has a few regular fans there.
Your link didn't work for me but Mira Mesa is very safe. You don't need to worry about hoodlums. Funny you asked, since I went traveling once and went for a jog and the bellman said, "uh, I wouldn't go running that way too far."

Alright OP, that's my old hood. Used to live a few blocks from the Residence Inn and worked next door. Lots of good recommendations here, although I'd avoid Callahans because it's nothing special. And there's absolutely no public transportation, sorry. Get a cab or a DD.

Or rent a bike and prepare yourself for an awesome self-led brewery tour, aka the Mira Mesa Grand Slam. Karl Strauss (Japanese Gardens), Green Flash, Wet n Reckless, Rough Draft, Hess and Alesmith. Ballast Point and White Labs are do-able, but adds some mileage.

I highly recommend going for an early morning or evening run in Penasquitos, especially coming from Denver. It's a cool taste of SD desert ecology in the heart of suburbia. You can take the Lopez canyon trailhead down to the bottom of the canyon. You can find the Lopez canyon trail at the end of Pacific Mesa Blvd about 2 blocks from your hotel - Check out the aerial view on Google Maps. Really, really easy to navigate.

Once at the bottom of the trail, cross over Wagon wheel Crossing and head east. The north side of the creek is generally more pedestrian-friendly with fewer hills. It's roughly ~3 miles to the waterfall from Wagon Wheel, and you can either do an out-and-back or go all the way to the Black Mountain Road trailhead and parking lot, which is 6 miles from Wagon Wheel.

From Black Mountain, you can come back on the streets, back the way you came or come back on the other side of the canyon. There are a lot of hikers, runners and cyclists using the canyon in the mornings and evenings - I used to ride my bike there 3-4 times a week.

I like them on occasion, but I'm not sure why that post came out of the blue. Besides, aren't Mira Mesa's major specialties pho joints and Indian restaurants?

It looks like the run you mapped is just south of Los Penasquitos Canyon. Park in the lot off Sorrento Valley Blvd. Instead of following the trail southeast, follow it northeast. It is about six miles to the end of the trail (at a large community park with restrooms and drinking fountains). There is a small waterfall at the halfway point. The trail has a few steep spots, but nothing too technical.
The trail is large and there will be several other runners, hikers, mountain bikers and possibly a few folks on horses. I have run alongside coyote pups and deer on the trail.

The best advice I can give you is, if driving, stay off of Mira Mesa Blvd at ALL COSTS.. worst street in the County. The Lake Miramar run --> Ballast Point Old Grove suggestion from oxycity is gold. I would get to O'Brien's as soon as they open for that Champions League match if you go there.

Oh yeah, that reminds me - go to Google Maps, turn on Traffic, set it to Thursday or Friday, and then move the time slider around to get a general idea of traffic patterns around rush hour, because they're pretty consistent.

Rough Draft is also in the area.

Had Saint Archer IPA last night at PP Carlsbad. It was OK, but certainly not as good as Carlsbad Raceway, IMO.

Thank you so much on all the area advice! So I think O'Breins will be the plan for Saturday, and good tips about the traffic and transportation. I like the bike brew tour idea, except I have a hard enough time riding a bike sober. LOL It's best I keep my feet on the street. Gonna have to check out Wet n Reckless & Rough Draft. I haven't researched too much about them.

We'll be covering a lot of breweries, but if you have any other tips I'd love to hear them. I want to check out more beer bars as well. I think I've narrowed it down to Blind Lady Ale House and/or Tiger!Tiger, Churchill's Pub & Grille,
    Neighborhood, Small Bar and Toronado...

Best advise in this thread is show up early at O'Brien's for the Champions League final. It will be packed but well worth showing up at opening. Great soccer, fabulous beer it's tough to beat.

Get the pork belly banh mi. because they don't have a reuben and that sandwich is delicious.
Best pub in San Diego, their reuben is decent but I would recommend the sunrise burger.
