Being from NC I am obviously fond of the local beers here (63 breweries in all). I know that not many of them ship beyond the south east (if beond NC at all) so i'm interested to hear from those outside of NC what brewery or NC beer have you tried, and your thoughts. Also for those in NC, what's your favorite?

Side note this thread is inspired because of the Duck Rabbit Barley Wine i'm having right now, followed by a rabid duck.

    Cheers!

Have to give the nod to Olde Hickory, love Death By Hops with a close second to Mother Earth, Silent Night is as good as it gets for a crisp December evening over a camp fire. Cheers.

I think foothills is the most overrated brewery in NC. While Sexual Chocolate is a pretty good beer I dont know if it deserves the hype and a brewery only release. My favorite would probably be Duck-Rabbit. Solid line up of year round beer and a great selection of seasonal releases.

Not sure what you mean by brewery only. I have seen bottle release parties outside of their brewery at bottle shops outside of winston, and numerous bars that have the barrel on tap for a month or so after its released.

But yes agreed, its to damn hard to get. Maybe the upgrade in their equipment recently will mean it will be easier to get.

As a former North Carolinian, I would list my favorite NC breweries as:

    1. Big Boss (but not the stuff they bottle and you see in stores)
    2. Duck Rabbit
    3. French Broad

I know it gets out in kegs and a case(maybe) sneaks out to several different bottle shops, but it is mainly a brewery only(bottle) release. Hopefully they will be able to bottle and distribute more of their seasonal releases.

Until recently I would have said Foothills. Their releases were awesome and their beers were pretty good.

Now that the release structure has changed, I would have to say Olde Hickory, though the people at Pisgah are really cool too.

I live about a mile from Foothills, but had never had Jade....until last night. It is currently on tap there. Really good, can't wait to have it again!!

I haven't tried half of these 63... but I'm going to throw out that Pisgah Brewing has some fantastic beers.

Still waiting for that really great brewery here...maybe NoDa will be it..haven't got to try any of their stuff yet. Olde Hickory makes some nice beers and is probably my current favorite. Like others have said, foothills is overrated or, at least, they don't bottle anything better than average.

Definitely Olde Hickory in my opinion. Death by Hops is a great year round beer and Event Horizon is simply amazing. Lindley Park is pretty damn solid as well. They are really starting to hit their stride in my opinion.

Foothills and Olde Hickory make some damn fine beer, but my favorites are Triangle and and Fullsteam. The people at both are better than anywhere else.
