Ever wish you could call the craft beer police on a store?

Just last week, I was trying to find a bomber of Arrogant Bastard at a store near my house. I poke around the aisle and find it, only to see it's about a month past the "enjoy by" date. I look in the fridge, same deal. An employee sees me poking around and asks if I need assistance to which I explain the situation. He responds with "ya we won't take it off the shelf because that's the last batch of Arrogant Bastard we received this season." I then explained that Arrogant Bastard wasn't seasonal and his response was "well, it's seasonal for us then. And it doesn't go bad anyways. You should be fine buying that."

I was at a loss for words. I walked out of the store, buying nothing.

Haha, I have used this a few times, but this place had all kinds of out of stock beer, not just the ABA.

I would have still bought it if that is what I was looking for...I mean how bad could it have been?

Unfortunately most of the stores I go to have way too much old beer, hard to find anything relatively fresh. Way too many craft beers on shelves, not enough customers. I don't know how this industry can prosper when the product can't be turned over quick enough. Someone is absorbing this cost, don't know how this is sustainable.

Probably not very, but there were two other stores nearby that have a reasonable selection of craft beer, so why buy it instead of spending 10 minutes to get it fresher?

That's typical at pretty much all the stores around me. A couple have Sublimely Self Righteous with a best by date of February 2012 still on the shelf. I consider it a victory when I find any Stone beer within its freshness range.

If I didn't want it right away sure, but I wouldn't personally drive 10 min just to get ABA fresher. I mean if the store is generally bad as far as selection and freshness I wouldn't be in it in the first place.

When are the OPs of this type of forum ever going to get it?? That's the answer you are going to get - every time. It's called the 'company line', 'being a homer', 'representing', or whatever else you want to call it.
Did you want this answer??: " OMG, sir , I cannot believe it! That never happens here at Fantasy World Craft Beer Puveyors, it's such an anomaly. Let me get the manager to write you a credit for a free case of (insert favorite whale here), and call Stone to send a truckload of fresh A B here now. No, not now, Right Now!!!!!"
There's a real world out there, and craft beer sits on the shelf sometimes in that very real world called 'retail'.
When I see an expired or old crafter sitting around the store, I pass on it and move on, without making a Federal case about it. And the last thing I want to see in the beer shop is the police - of any kind.

It's not that the he had expired stock sitting on the shelf, it's that he tried to push it on me despite me pointing out the expiration date. And his bullshit explanation for leaving it on the shelf pissed me off too.

Perhaps it was left on the shelf because of the recent price increase..... I was actually looking at AB yesterday, I wanted to make some onion rings with AB in the batter. I noticed that it had a $7.50 price tag :astonished:. I passed. I have never paid more than $5 a bomber for this stuff, even at this store. I wanted to ask the manager on duty what gives, but simply decided to leave it alone and grab something else.

I too have had the same problem with Stone. My local store carries just about everything, including Stone products; however, the bottles are all past the freshness date. Now, I've heard conflicting things about freshness, but I would prefer to try the beer fresh first.
I utilized the Stone.com reporting program, but absolutely nothing was done. I mean, I didn't expect them to drive a truck with fresh brews out to Michigan, but I would've liked a reply.

My best friend just found a Stone IPA at a local store that was from 2011. Greg Koch would be flipping if he knew.

I haven't seen it increase in CT ever. It's always been $4.50 -$5.99. Sure some places charge a bit more, but that's not unique to ABA.

The "freshness" problem clearly, succinctly, explained here. Nicely done.

Just the other day I was wondering where does all the "expired" beer go? Do distributors take it back? Then what? Shelf space is a problem, so stores have to do something with it if they want different products on their shelves...don't they?

    I'll take it at cost - 50%.
